Even if you're in the position of buying a new car, this doesn't have to limit your choice to new cars.
A couple of months ago I was in that position, and seriously considered a Smart Fortwo. Unfortunately, the fuel costs are really a small proportion of the total ownership costs, and depreciation weighed heavily against it.
So, what did I do? I bought a 1993 Mazda MX-5 (Miata). Yes, it's a high miler, but it is still servicable, and will probably last another five years at least. I can do my own maintenance (I'm a mech engineer, so it doesn't bother me), which I wouldn't be a practical propositon if buying a new car (service history reasons).
Sure, this is not a true apples-apples comparison, but it is still a valid comparison, as it shows the differences between practical alternatives.
Brown outs and power outages are more than likely a result of peak loading. Even if everyone plugged in their cars at night, this would be a very predictable load/time curve which could easily be accommodated by the electricity utilities.
Charging your car up would be much less than the likes of running an airconditioner, so the capacity is 'out there'.
It's not a 'mate' that Adam required. its just that the syllables got mushed together. He was really asking for a 'man date', you know, a reason for existing.
The problem is that it's taken till 2004 presidential elections to actually come up with one.
Bill: Throw me a stool please Steve. Gotta plug this anal log hole.
Steve: No Bill, I think it would be absolutely reckless and irresponsible for anyone to try and break wind in this company.
Then came Peter to him, and said, Bill how oft shall my computer BSOD against me, and I pay next month's subscription? till seven times? Bill saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. Therefore is the kingdom of operating systems is likened unto a certain CEO, which would take account of his programmers. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand lines of code. But forasmuch as he had not to compile, the CEO instructed his line manager for him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and the code be written. The programmer therefore fell down, and pleaded with him, saying, Bill, have patience with me, and I will give you all the vulnerabilities you require. Then the CEO was moved with compassion, and instructed he be loosed, and gave him his schedule variation. But the same programmer went out, and found one of his fellowprogrammers, which owed him an hundred lines of code: and he laid hands on him, and threw a chair at him saying, Write me the code that thou owest. And his fellowprogrammer fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will code it all, including documentation. And he would not: but went and cast him out to the OSS community, till he should learn to get buggy code into the marketplace quickly.
Most hydrogen generated today comes from steam reformed methane (natural gas). Not much difference, since most methanol is created from natural gas too.
Sure, you can use hydrolysis, but you can also charge a LiPo or other type of battery.
How much of this garbage ended up in the landfills around the Pacific Rim courtesy of your Phillipine and Australian branches?
The sad reality is not *that* much material can be truely recycled. Sure, the system solved California's problem, but those states (generic term) who don't have such a system end up being landfill prostitutes.
The Smart (fortwo, at least) may be a funky design, however economically it makes no sense. It still occupies a similar road-space as a conventional car while driving (think following distance x lane width).
The biggest killer to this proposition is depreciation costs. I have very recently looked at purchasing a Smart fortwo as a secondary commuting vehicle, since I have changed jobs. Previously our family had only one vehicle, and I commuted on PT.
The result of all my investigations was to buy a 1993 Mazda MX-5 (Miata), which financially made the best sense/appeal compromise. Depreciation on a new Smart (at the spec I was prepared to drive) was about AUD400/month. Continuing depreciation of a 12yo MX-5 is less than half that. The difference can buy a *lot* of fuel, and fuel costs are less than 1/3 of TCO.
Additionally, though I can't prove it, my gut feel tells me that total financial running costs correlate well with environmental costs. In this case, I believe careful maintenance of an older second hand car is more environmentally sound than buying a brand spanking new one.
Ah, this is where I think you're mistaken. You can correct me if I'm wrong, as I come from the Australian perspective, but in all the election processes I've ever learned about, there will nearly *always* be winner for a seat. The winner will be the candidate who receives the greatest proportion of the votes, be it the primary vote or after distribution of preferences as the case may be.
So one vote less as a result of an invalid ballot does not make any significant dent in the proportions (this is the basis of statistical sampling), thus is a wasted vote and does not constitute a protest of any significance.
Whether you like it or not, you are (most likely) a citizen of your country and a member of your community. Withdrawing from participation only causes yourself to miss out.
Of course the other way of registering a protest vote is to emmigrate to a country which better fits your political bent.
Considering that TV is the predominant campaign commmunications vehicle, it's not surprising that they'll throw money at it to make sure it will remain working properly after a digital transition.
A true "protest" vote is to run as an independent for your electorate. That is the only way you can vote against all the other candidates without voting for a candidate which doesn't suit your values.
Sure, there are limitations to this prinicple, but don't delude yourself that an invalid ballot is in any way a protest vote. Consider who's chances of election it jeopardises. Nobody's? Some protest.
In my day, we could fix a car with a set of screwdrivers and a shifter. This new-fangled stuff requires a CS doctorate and an RF engineering master to even open the bonnet. I mean, where's the engine? You can't even see it for all the OnStar gizmos.
I bet you don't even know who your congressional representative is.
If you think better PT would be beneficial for Snohomish, then *lobby*.

What will become of the Great American Road Trip?
You will hire a trailer which has a fuel tank and a diesel generator pack...

Exactly! And the consensus is that Natural Gas is the 'cleanest' of the petroleum fuels! Methane has the highest H:C ratio of all hydrocarbons.

President disbarred after man date blown.
Actually, should read:
Bill: Throw me a stool please Steve. Gotta plug this anal log hole. Steve: No Bill, I think it would be absolutely reckless and irresponsible for anyone to try and break wind in this company.
Bill, throw me a stool please Steve. I need to plug this anal log hole.
Wot, an X5 or a Z4? They're made in South Carolina.

Look at the middle of the picture, it looks like some of the engineers have been doing some "circle-work" http://www.australianbeers.com/culture/circlework. htm with the rover...
Don't you just *love* interstate rivalry...

An invalid ballot is a vote that accepts whatever is the outcome of all the valid votes. Hardly a protest vote
Now you can turn them off at will with your TV-B-Gone. You can turn of 90% of dangerous animals within 17 seconds
Easy, just look at the Best Before date.
Ah, so there's truth in the rumour about Bill giving out cash if I forward the emails to all my friends!
