Why was the remote tracking-security feature installed? Laptops are a frequent target for theft in schools and off school property. The security feature was installed to help locate a laptop in the event it was reported lost, missing or stolen so that the laptop could be returned to the student.
How did the security feature work? Upon a report of a suspected lost, stolen or missing laptop, the feature was activated by the District's security and technology departments. The tracking-security feature was limited to taking a still image of the operator and the operator's screen. This feature has only been used for the limited purpose of locating a lost, stolen or missing laptop. The District has not used the tracking feature or web cam for any other purpose or in any other manner whatsoever.
All reliable news sources such as AP and USA Today specificaly say they have not been able to get in touch with the parents, student, lawyer or school district.
No source of the PDF file containing the "supposed" lawsuit comes from a reliable location - for example a governemnt's web site.
Wow... that brain tumour surgery must of cost CNN a ton of money. Well, I guess now that he has been fired, they don't need to worry about the future cost of his medical bills.
Macworld explains why Apple computers will remain nitch products...
From http://www.macworld.com/2006/06/reviews/parallels/ index.php in June 2006:
"The first, and the biggest letdown for diehard gamers, is that Parallels can't presently handle accelerated 3-D graphics. So, while you can play Windows Solitaire just fine, you'll have to use Boot Camp if you want to try out Half Life 2."
It is March 2007, nothing has changed - and it will never change.
The recruiter probably made an mistake. It is unlikely a recruiting tactic. Communicate you situation to Human Resources in writing. Save copies of all communications. Keep the tone of your communications positive. If you don't have an immediate alternative, figure a way to make a low cost relocation to your new job, and then start looking for a new job immediately. Unfortunately, it is unlikely you have enough evidence to support legal action against the company and/or the recruiter, and even if you do it is probably not worth the time and effort. Try not to make a bad situation worse. Stay positive and friendly as much as possible. Cut your losses and move on to a different company as soon as you can. Put a negative experience like this behind you and concentrate on the future.
My notebook computer makes it seem so trivial... If my datacenter was full of notebook computers instead of rack-mount servers...
It would be silent, have no heat problems, have skinny little DC cables for power, use much less room...
I'm just getting started...
I supply roughly 900 servers for my corporation's internal users at an annual cost of approximately $20 million. I provide several different service level agreements that probably fit at least 90% of what our corporation needs. There are definitely users I cannot sufficiently meet the needs for. A central IT organization can only hope to meet the needs of the majority of users. If you need instantaneous reaction to a need such as installing a stick of memory in a server, you will not be coming to me for a product. Our servers only use predefined amounts of memory. It is not efficient to pay a contract labor $35/hour to perform such tasks. A server is a very mundane commodity object. There is nothing in the server itself that will do anything that will have any impact on my corporation. But, hopefully, the applications that users install on my servers will have a significant impact.
Digital over-the-air TV has the potential of letting small independent TV broadcasters back into the air waves. It could losen the grip of the huge media corporations on our lives. I think over-the-air digital television is amazing. I think it could put cable and satelite tv companies out of business. The reception is absolutely perfect - and it is free!!!!
Death to Clear Channel... Long live digital TV!
Over-the-air digital TV will give power back to the people. I think over-the-air digital television is amazing. It could put cable and satelite tv companies out of business. The reception is absolutely perfect - and it is free!!!!

As far as I'm concerned, this is a no brainer. Over-the-air digital television is amazing. I think it could put cable and satelite tv companies out of business. The reception is absolutely perfect - and it is free!!!!
As far as the cost of a tuner to attach to an old analog television - I don't know how much they would cost - less than $50?

The Mac mini runs UNIX. Isn't there a game base for UNIX? If there is little difference between Xbox 2 and the Mac mini (they both use the same processor) - wouldn't the Mac mini be preferable because it uses UNIX?
I use Prey from http://preyproject.com/ to track my computers in case they are stolen.
Does anyone know of a better product?
I'd like to put a similiar product on my iPhone. Any suggestions?

The story is probably fictitious. All reference repeat heavely from this web site:

BoingBoing is pointing at a story that is probably not true.

The attachment originates from the same website - not a government web site.
There is no reliable sorce of information backing this story. It is probably fabricated.
And give me a break - who is stupid enough to think this story is true - just based on the facts, alone?
The AP is trying to confirm the story. The story has not been confirmed:
By MARYCLAIRE DALE, Associated Press Writer Maryclaire Dale, Associated Press Writer – 1 hr 30 mins ago
Superintendent Christopher W. McGinley did not immediately return a message left by The Associated Press.
I have found nothing on the internet that would suggest this story is true.

I think the Mac mini sells at a razor-thin profit margin (or a loss).
