  1. Bit of a fallacy... on FCC Considering 10-Digit Dialing [UPDATED] · · Score: 1
It's not really that the phone companies are "hoarding numbers" as the article alledges. Part of the problem is how the numbers are assigned.

Let's say you are a small phone company. All of your customers have phone numbers like this: 527-XXXX. Even if you only have a thousand customers, no one else is assigned the rest of those 527 numbers.

You can find out more information from the The North American Numbering Council

  2. Overreaction. on 'Hacking' To Be Declared Illegal · · Score: 1
At least in the United States, it would be years before anything even remotely like this came into law.

First, it would have to get passed through Congress, then the signed by the President, and then go through the Court system (because you know the ACLU and EFF would not sit still for this) and then, if every single person in this process was a complete dork, THEN and only then would it come into law.

Don't panic. Write your senator instead.

Personally, I don't see how creationism is totally unacceptable for educated, reasonably intelligent people.

You're seriously mixing scientific theories here. First off, Creationism is usually an argument AGAINST evolution (which, btw, has been approved by the Pope as well) not against the Big Bang theory.

Secondly, science is not a matter of Faith. There is no faith in science. If you can't prove it, it's bad science. Faith is not about proof. And those that preach Creationism should know that by now.

  4. The Dilbert Principle on Aristotle, Dilbert And The Working Life · · Score: 5
Scott Adams wrote in "the Dilbert Principle" (paraphased): "An employer's goal is to get as much work out of the employee for at little pay as possible, and an employee's goal is to do as little work for as much pay as possible." So, basically, Scott Adams has boiled Joanne B. Ciulla's very fine book into just a few words.

The reason Dilbert is so funny is because it's true. I'd rather read that then a boring tome of how work sucks.

Only if you go look at the storyboard. Generally, if I don't want to know what is going to happen in a movie -- I don't read the spoilers!

However, some fans like to know. And I think Lucas is in serious danger of offending his major fan base.

Have you ever seen two Democrats or two Republicans that agree on everything??? The answer to this, boys and girls, is a big NO.

However, Democrats generally have a major of issues they agree upon and the Republicans too -- (I'm not so sure we can say the same about the Reform Party but I digress.)

The point is there are some issues that the "Geek" community does agree on. And perhaps you/we/us/them/it should develop a PAC or, hell, even a Party that is formed on those issues.

    Just a thought.

  8. GenCon on Gen Con 2000 Report · · Score: 2

That report wasn't really news. It was more of a slam on Gamers everywhere. I went to Gencon and had a blast. Not only is there every time of gaming going on 24 hours a day, but it's also where you can preview the newest projects coming out or just released. Several highlights not referenced in the article: the D&D movie preview: I got to see the preview and it seriously rocked. Several of the actors were there and also very psyched about the movie. Dune RPG: This RPG system is not available anywhere but Gencon, and rumor has it that it's not going to be available anywhere else. I believe they are going to be updating it with a new mechanics for later in the year. So, if you wanted to play Dune and you weren't at Gencon, tough luck. The Star Trek FPS was awesome! I kept getting fragged but I didn't care. Come on, admit it, you've always wanted to shoot aliens with your phaser... and that Mr. Spock needs a good smackdown! As for the smelly gamers and fat women in chain mail -- forget it. I didn't see anything remotely like that. I did see a very large portion of Gen Y's dressed in black and skulking around the Hyatt, pretending to be vampires. That was amusing to watch. Rani

  9. Worst Episode Ever. on X-Files FPS Episode · · Score: 1

    1. It was sexist.

I was gagging when they had "Jade Blue Afterglow" walking through the room and Mulder was salivating like a dog. I was annoyed with the idea that /only/ men like first person shooters. I was pissed off with Scully's comment of "Hey, don't pick on the girl."

    2. It didn't pass the "Can a five year old see plot holes?" test.

Okay, you have this huge icky computer killing people. Do you A) turn off the computer or B) send in more people to get killed? Of course, they pick B. Oh yes, there's some lame excuse about how it will ruin the game -- but please, didn't these people ever hear of backup????

    3. Was Gibson on drugs?

As a friend of mine said, "Okay, did we all just like Neuromancer so much just because we didn't know anything about computers then?" It's obvious that this script was written without a concept of how computers worked. Is Gibson that lacking in computer knowledge or did some hack destroy the script?

Argh. All in all, worse episode ever.

  10. World Domination on Want More Geek Chicks? · · Score: 1

Tongue in cheek or not, isn't one of Linux's goals "World Domination?"

You're not going to get that if you ignore women. Women make up 50% of the population of the world.
If there's no cultivation of women in Linux or if they feel excluded or left out, there's going to be even MORE resistance to switching over to a new OS that's just for "guys."

I am not saying I want a "Barbie (tm)" skin. I do not want happy/fuzzies/paperclips for my Linux. But when I asked a male friend to help me install Linux on my box and I was told 'I didn't want to do that cause it's too hard.' I am positive that if I had been male, I would not have gotten that reaction. There was a definate impression that I should just stick with Windoze cause I wasn't "techie" enough -- cause I was a girl. (BTW, thanks for nothing, Mike!!)

I agree with the article. Adopt a babygeek. Be more willing to listen to women's ideas. CULTIVATE.

I object to the WV law on "wild onions" and children being called stupid.

First, they are not wild onions, they're called ramps -- a native onion-like plant in WV. They REEK to high heaven when eaten raw. If you came to class after eating some ramps, the whole school would stink.

    Trust me on this one.

  13. Is Heavy Weather fact or fiction? on Ask Bruce Sterling · · Score: 1

I recently read Heavy Weather and I was disturbed by similarities to the weather and the environment described in the book and the weather and the environment that's happening now.

Weather appears to be getting worse. Global warming is predicted to raise the temperature of the Earth up to 4 degrees and the recent New York outbreak of encephalitis is being blamed on the rising temperatures.

In Heavy Weather, the characters were asked at just what point did the Earth become unsavable due to human caused pollution. So, my question to you is: Do you believe the Earth is unsavable and Heavy Weather was a prediction of what is to come, or was it a wake-up call?

    Thanks,
