My husband and I also play EQ together. We tried Star Wars (as he is a big fan) but couldnt get our heads around it.
We started EQ when I worked for the company (way back when) however have kept it up since then. We play often together side by side and chat together. We know about 3 other married couples who play and have done lan parties (sheepish grin).
My father even plays EQ and he is 56 and retired.;)
I wake up, usually late, and rush into work. There I do anything from programming to system administrative duties. I get off work at five or so, but rarely leave the office until 7 pm. at the earliest. Often times I will be here till 9 or ten pm. After that I go home. I play with my x10 technology, (I am currently working on getting my network at home to respond to vocal commands. My thought was how cool would it be to walk in and state "lights on." After I fuss with that, or play with my home security (done via web cam technology, and motion sensor's) I play everquest, quake, tribes or some sort of game till 2 am. fall asleep. rinse. repeat.
Last Saturday my friends and I took a spur of the moment trip to vegas, two of us had our palm's, and we all had our cell phone's, but... no laptops. the conversation on the way back, the closer we got to home. the more it turned to computers... and how long we had been away from our computers. (less than 24 hours mind you.) The first thing I did when I got home, wasn't shower. I didnt feed my cat. I flipped on my monitor and looked over network.
I have sat in bed, next to my boyfriend, after a long weekend, and good sex. We both turn on our laptop's and do what we want... it is our quality time together. I enjoy it. Some couples read... we compute.
There is an online comic I read. Mostly because I understand how the character's feel. read this thread... http://www.gpf-comics.com/d/19990202.html
how many of us can grin..and nod. Because we understand...
Instead of buying a new car, my friend spent around 4k on a new monitor. Why? Because she wanted it...she needed it. Technology is a disease. A need we have. A craving in our soul. To learn the newest language. Keep up to date on the latest security issues. Don't get me wrong though. It is a disease I wouldnt give up.
I recently am moving in with a roommate, who decided that I needed to get cable. Now I dont watch TV much, but since she was demanding the Sci Fi, channel (I figure we can put it in the back ground for our Linux network) However, the big question was whether or not to get satellite, digital, or tivo (or rather dishnetwork's dishplayer for satellite**) or tivo with digital cable.
(**note dishplayer runs WinCE which is NOT a plus)
Now both us are Linux gurls by default so the tivo held an awe to it. However, I wasn't sure if it was even slightly comparable to satellite, or would it be better to (as Taco did) get it in addition to satellite. Also satellite worries me because you cant get any of the basic channels (and I want my Buffy dammit). However, with satellite, I know you can get blank cards (not saying we would get one but I know they exist) and then we could get free porn which is always a good thing (hey gurls like porn too ya know). Anyway we have been shooting this around for a week or two, and it is time to make a decision. Help! prices, and opinions are welcome, and desired as we have to make a decision.
hmm perhaps, but of course then we could rate you men on size... If everytime a guy asked me on a date, I asked him to drop his pants and show his...*ahem* equipment... and say if he didnt size up I didnt date him. I would be going on a lot fewer dates.
Rating anyone on the size of their biceps, or even how big their..."keyboard" is just sad.
Hopefully advertising will see that and stop pressing physicality.
So gamers gurls get the choice now of role models such as a five five girl with huge tits, and wears shorts shorts, or the more elegant 6'0 120 lbs model type. No thanks on either. so is that why some guys tend to play these characters? Because then, if only for awhile, they get to see their otherwise unrealistic fantasies viewable? I still think we need to put a skirt on tux:)
I agree. I would much rather play a female character than a male. However, when you look at these games. The male characters tend to be rather plain looking, but the women are all very busty, with tiny waists. Why. because of their intended audience. Quite honestly...produce what sells. And sex sells. So maybe if we stuck a little skirt on Tux, and gave him huge breasts, the Linux movement would be stronger. Hell... it's a thought.
Basically most responses tend to be towards the guys saying "Heck yeah I play Lara.. have you SEEN her ass???" Games are designed for men in mind. I mean come on. HOW many women walk around in those damn outfits? And I want one woman who has breasts like that to walk up to me... Esp. if they are natrual. Games, being a visual stimulation... which we all know most men run on....and since we are engineering the game towards men, they make the characters something the men want to see. Besides there arent enough gurl gamers out there that would make the game..."visually stimulating" enough for men. I mean come on. whem men close their eyes, and picture their top ten women.. if they could have them. What geek doesnt picture Lara...
Actually whenever I play Tribes or Quake I usuallyplay as a gurl. But one of my freinds plays Tribes under a girl skin... and why? Because he likes the voice.. right after he kills you he likes to stoop over you and say "hi..." in that wonderfully husky voice... he gets a kick from it... *shrug* Just one of those things. But if I thought playing a guy would get me into more games.. i would play one. Do guys give me an advantage because I am a girl. Yes.. But I also play it up with phrases like "dont pick on the girl..." etc... Hey.. sometimes playing the helpless female works...
I must say I read the article, and although I dont nessecarily agree with everything she said, I must say I read the article, and although I don't necessarily agree with everything she said, it did need to be said. Yes, the sex of a person should not matter when it comes to technical ability, or knowledge. Yes, when someone goes to do a job it shouldn't matter, whether they have a penis or not. BUT the reality of the situation is it does.
I have been looked over for jobs not because I couldn't do tech support, or write the code properly, but because I had breasts. One project manager even had the gall to tell me I couldn't be in the field because I was "cute and a girl..." I was so appalled; I wanted to walk out of his office. But could I? No... Even my close friends tease me constantly because I am an "attractive geek" it grates on my nerves. Should it matter? No. But it does. My sex, and my job, is always taken with a raised eyebrow. After all, a girl... in computers... who woulda thought?
The problem is that some (not all...I am generalizing) men do think that a woman/girl/etc. can't do "the job". That is a major reason why some women decide NOT to become interested in a more technical field. It isn't because we aren't capable, or we aren't exposed to it. But the mere fact that we have to fight on a daily basis to prove our ability in our own work force. I can not even begin to tell you the amount of times I have shut my mouth rather than argue with a guy, because he obviously did not know what he was talking about, but felt that I couldn't possibly know because I was a girl...so how could I be technical. After all... I believe his words were "You aren't really interested in Linux, don't you have something else you would be rather doing."
There is sexism, and any male or female who says there isn't is lying to himself or herself. I happen to be lucky living in a large city where if I am not happy working one place, I can most likely get something else based on my knowledge and ability. Some women however don't have this ability, and the sexism is even more rampant I assume in larger cities. In some fields, people are looked down upon because of their ages... Luckily it isnt quite as bad in IT because us "young'ins" kind of grew up with the technology. However sexism is rampant in this field.
We should strive to make more women comfortable, and perhaps more will fall into the field. But until then, why don't the guys give us "geek gurls" a bit of slack, take a moment, and view a person on what they know. And NOT whether they wear make up or not.
1) the TV remote control and cable TV, - to keep men occupied and out of our hair... 2) pop-top beer cans and twist off beer bottles, -to keep men occupied and out of our hair... 3) microwave popcorn, -to feed men so we dont have to cook 4) the internet and porn, - to keep men from bugging us in bed. 5) cheetos, to keep men fat and happy 6) viagra and rogaine, to keep us happy when we want to get rid of our heaache's and to keep them in acceptable appearance for when we DO want them 7) atari and nintendo, to keep men occupied so we dont have to listen to them 8) instant replay, to amuse their small minds:) 9) take-out pizza and chinese food, to feed them.... and 10) the Wonder-Bra. so we dont have to bother with intelligent conversation with the beasts...
Being a gurl geek... they dont. If a computer could.. *ahem* give a geek guy a real good hard drive... he would forget all about women. They only come up from their boxes for air, food, and occasionally companionship.
Not saying that I dont do the same thing sometimes...
Once again it all depends. Northern CA geeks are completely different from So. CA geeks. We don't get along...The main issue is there ARE different types of geeks, some want woods.. others want a decent night life. *sigh* can't we all jus' get along

Nyah nerds tend to be younger... we grew up with computers... so we didnt have to "learn them" they kinda come natrually... like an extra arm.

There seems to be a geek mantra.
"cute geeks, bigger better and faster connection, and 24 hour everything"
Once again it all depends. Northern CA geeks are completely different from So. CA geeks. We don't get along...The main issue is there ARE different types of geeks, some want woods.. others want a decent night life.
*sigh*
can't we all jus' get along
1. cute geek guys or girls.
2. bandwidth.
3. 24 hour everything (restaurants, markets, clubs, etc). (something for their non-geek other half's)
4. ability to have quiet time.
5. money.
6. challenges.
There was a preview a few weeks ago at UCLA, apparently it is pretty amazing. I know I couldnt go then, but am going to be going next week...
As for the translation, Neil Gaiman apparently tried very hard to stick closely to the original.
