I hit submit before I finished the above comment, guess thats what I get for doing too much at once....so here's the last bit.

Things are different when you're in a city with a metro area population of 1 million, and when you're in a town of under 10,000, and the two closest "cities" are 30 miles away and have 25,000 people, and the two closest real cities are 100+ miles away (I'm defining a "real city" as having more than 100k people).

While all that is true, the simple fact is I'm in the middle of nowhere, with populations that largely live in trailers and are missing teeth (I know I'm stereotyping, but there is a large amount of truth to it around here). They can't afford new radios, much less new cars.

All the local radio stations are owned by one company (not even clearchannel) and they're so badly run that they don't even notice when their equipment is malfunctioning, and nothing short of an FCC visit will get them to fix it. There's no way they're going to spend ANY money that they aren't legally required to spend, much less spend it on something that will only benefit a few, when those few, for the most part, already use XM or Sirius.

Sadly, what you suggest about unifying effort behind linux will not happen any time soon. Look around slashdot at the ubuntu vs debian vs redhat vs gentoo vs distribution x vs slackware flamewars that go on anytime anyone critizes anything about any one of them. Now expand that sense of overwhelming importance to the developers. Then add in a couple parts of pissed-off-teenager and about 12 parts each of vanity and ego. Then try to get them to work together.

You may get them to talk. Hell, you might even get them to start on something. Then someone will get pissed, and fork the project. And the division(s) will start all over again.

Until we can solve the problems caused by humans having an ego, open-source will always have this problem.

But don't bash the guy because he decides not to share what games he owns. Some people don't feel that is any of anyone else's business. Your argument (Who cared what games you've played, unless you've modded something?)is much like the arguments about encryption, searches, etc. You know the one. "Why not let $them do $thing if you have nothing to hide." It doesn't work in those cases, and it doesn't work here either.

You've seen what is happening with sites like facebook and myspace and people having real-life consequences (company A looks up applicant B and sees them doing activity C that HR person D doesn't like, so they don't get the job). I can't wait to see the outrage when people are getting passed over for jobs and such because they play Game XYZ. Knee-jerk reaction is the constant cries for more power for the government. As a so-called "conservative" the administration should be for LESS government, not more. I don't care about bank records, or phone calls -- they've always been able to get that information. I'm even OK with them using a court thats sworn to secrecy to get them. Knee-jerk is expanding their power to gather that information without warrants. To be blunt, the court is basically a rubber-stamp anyway, but at least it was there.

As for doing something about people dying in this country because of terrorism, is it worth giving up rights for an illusion of safety? Why shouldn't Joe be allowed to add his own work to it, and make money off it? Did he not put his time and labor into it? Is it just that you don't like the idea of someone else making money off something that you had input into, and didn't get anything out of it?

I don't buy the "for the public good" arguments that get thrown around, since the original is still public domain -- anyone else can come along, take the original, modify it, and put THEIR version back into the public domain if they want -- nothing removed the original from the public domain.

We all have pages devoted to our hobbies, and the software is available through those pages, for people who are interested. Not saying a repository wouldn't be useful, it just that most of the people I know with stuff to offer would simply rather spend their time on their hobbies.
