To me the real problem is focusing on the wrong details. Take Skyrim for example. Is it really a big thing if they, say, tripled the detail on the existing characters? Do the NPCs need pores or drops of sweat?
Or would it be more interesting to walk into Whiterun, and there's a 100 NPCs walking around, or you assault a fort with the Stormcloaks and there's 100 other soldiers at your side attacking the 100 Imperials in the fort, and clouds of arrows raining down [nice knowing ya, shieldless dual wielders:-) ]? It's a "more detailed objects" versus "more objects in the world" sort of argument, I guess. I'd rather see the power applied to "more objects" at this point, IMHO.
I've been trying to get Amazon to deep discount e-books on titles where they have a record of me purchasing the physical book. Lordy, I could convert nearly a whole bookcase to Flash RAM, assuming they were all available in Kindle format. I'm under no illusion they'd ever give them away, but on the other hand they could make it the latest editions. Call it an "upgrade".
I finally started buying a few eBooks because the prices seemed to be drifting down. Bought some programming texts at half the printed price. Would like to see better, but my physical home library is packed as it is.
They'll also back up your movie to this magical black box that has tape in it. Yeah, *video* tape! Can you imagine? What sorcery is this? Even duct tape can't do that! The backup isn't quite as high quality as the DVD, but what peace of mind isn't worth that, eh?
If the magic tape back up fails, they will send you a printed flip book of the movie and an out of work actor to do the voices as you flip.
Another angle is that I'm reading a novel, some historical event is mentioned, and I pop over to Wiki or something to fill in any knowledge gap. I learned something. Yay.
In this context, it means someone who is insufficiently skilled at smelling bullshit. If a plurality of voters were competent in this regard, we would have had different leadership at the national level for pretty much all of the past 100 years.
The problem is that it's all bullshit, even before we get to the primaries. Look at the GOP field. SRSLY? This batch of... beings? By the time we the people get to vote, anyone not a complete sociopath has been long pushed out or away, or, more likely these days, never considered running because they have pesky attributes like empathy or a conscience. They don't want to relive that little moral snafu (with moral being a wildly subjective term) they committed in their first year of college that the media absolutely will uncover and plaster all over the place as if it matters. Or they don't have it in them to knowingly lie and promise the moon to everyone, or spout religious tracts they know are piffle, or economic flim flam.
Do you think they foresaw our system filtering out everyone but the alpha sociopaths from positions of power? People in charge who might not *care* if it flames out now because, well, they have *their* little bolt holes set up for when the worst happens.

No, that's your religion. Some of us have become apostates, or platform atheists, if you prefer.
Slashdot, it must be said, continues to be a great source of insightful comments
Me too!
Are we sure it didn't?

Unfortunate alignment, but I had to chuckle.

Well, in the world of mere mortals, we sometimes click the wrong button. I know it's a flaw, but we're working real hard to evolve past such things.
We're gonna love and tolerate the shit outta you!

Today's lesson: anecdotal evidence sucks.
When quote tags fail. Oh, for an "Edit" button on Slashdot, but I guess that's too hip or something.
When used as a heat pump, the device might be useful for solid-state cooling applications...
The logical conclusion is, of course, a glowing refrigerator.
I support this line of inquiry.
Didn't David Brin use this idea with lasers to keep his sun skimming ship cool, or did I dream that?
No, the issue at question here is whether it is right and legal to force religious organizations to act against their conscience
No, actually, the issue at question here is ACTA.

Would a properly formatted burst at the right frequency make the call drop? There might be no need for extended jam sessions.
Not really. A hole is pretty permanent and needs to be fixed. A jammer can be switched off again, leaving the spectrum as it was.
I telecommute sometimes. They can tell I'm working by whether or not I meet my milestones. This is not difficult.
you are a statistical outlier.
That's the nicest thing anyone has said to me all week. :-D

Well played.

It's him playing to his base. These guys are not stupid even though they say what appears, to the likes of you or me, to be stupid things.
