Frankly, I would rather the companies didn't bother. When I have often fixed pre-builts for friends, it has often involved junking a good chunk of the stuff that came with it. You get a far more stable and efficient machine when you build your own and only put on the software you want. If you don't have the skills to do it yourself, befriend a geek. Judging by the way these companies bog down windows machines, I would hate them to do this with linux. It might give linux a bad name if inefficient systems bogged down with too much crap hit the mainstream.

As the difference is in the instruction set, have you never wondered why video card manufacturers don't issue video bios updates to add the new instructions? It's because the manufacturer's want to sell you new cards. They could put in the software upgrade ability. So DX10 only comes on vista... DX10 games won't be common for quite a while and more vid card choices will arrive that don't cost 500 bucks. If you must troll, make your arguments plausible. If you are just stupid, I apologize.

Frankly on a lot talk on this drivers issue is from people talking out of bopth sides of their mouth. People who blame the hardware manufacturers for a lack of Linux support seem to be the ones to blame MS for what is the hardware manufacturer's responsibility. You want to upgrade cause you like the tech, well go on-line and see if your old hardware is supported, and that includes printers and other peripherals. To not do so is just stupid. When I build a Linux box, I make sure the components are supported befire I buy them.

This is the same as the PS3 stuff. I have a Wii, I like it a lot. I will never buy a PS3. But enough of that stuff too. It is killing the variety of stories available on this site.

Also, if the claimed numbers of pirated copies of windows out there are anywhere close to the truth, could the problems those people have be the result of not being able to patch and update their software? Are some people really blaming MS in many cases because their software won't work right when pirated? I ask this because a) some keep saying it is crap, b) I have owned a variety of machines over the years and I never really had the kinds of problems people are complain about (nor have my friends and family) and c) every OS I've used has short comings and annoyances.

  19. Geez... on Information Technology Pros Debate Windows Vista · · Score: 1

Again with this stuff... Anyone who knows this stuff knows to avoid any new MS OS for the first year. Wait for the service packs which address these issues... and then upgrade if you want. If you buy a new machine now... then yeah, you'll be likely stuck with it until the fixes come if you plan to run windows. Almost everything that has been written about vista is a carbon copy of xp when it first came out. I am even beginning to think some of these hacks have pulled out their old xp articles and changed the name to vista.

The drivers are really are not an MS problem. The vendors were provided with the specs to make their drivers ages ago and some are doing it and not others. The main reason a lot aren't doing it are because the would rather you buy new stuff from them! They are choosing not to make the driver. This, again, is no different than when xp came out. Many manufacturers use the release of a new MS OS as a cash cow by forcing people to buy new stuff by not supporting the old.

I am not defending these practices, I have just seen them happen over and over. If it comes right down to it, I run a mythbox and an xp machine. I've never had a problem with either. That is mainly because I build my own machines. Many people don't and get stuck. No Linux drivers for some stuff? Not a problem if you pick components that have support. That info is readily available. Ditto is the advice to stay away from vista until they get the stuff worked out.

As for the corporate side. Unless they were planning to upgrade machines at this time of year, they will not likely upgrade until their hardware replacement cycle comes due. As for MS, of course they are going to release new OS's. That's what they do. And the same problem happens each time. As always folks... let the early adopters take the bullet...

Likely this OS is solely dedicated to the particular tasks stated in the article.

As for control and security, I know that in such very secure systems, updates etc are more likely to be carried out by physically bringing the update media to the computer. If someone leaked the kernel info or other critical data, well, that would not be piracy, it would be treason. I think we all have an idea as to how that charge is handled. If you somehow found a way to hack your way into it, you would again, not be charged with hacking etc, but with espionage.

Interestingly, if they chose linux and borrowed and modified a piece of your GPL code to their purpose, you would never see it, be notified of it, or offered compensation. If you did hear about it, you could expect to be locked in a room and have a discussion about how you came to find out.
