by making everything free and replacing commercialism with encouragement to learn how to write code or do the other things we need people to do. If they encouraged people to automate the jobs people don't like doing maybe nobody would ever need to work, unless they wanted to.
I wanna write code. But right now I gotta work. So I sit in my cube and browse the web all day worrying about politics, the economy and my family.
Here in the US we do not tolerate these activities. He knows too much which makes him a potential terrorist. Using his skills without a license, without the authorization of the government, without legal protection, will land his ass in prison.
No, I was thinking of Thailand. And I probably wouldn't even hear about 40 executions per year, but 1000 a month might get my attention. Not that I agree with the drug trade, but I think execution is rather harsh.
But recently they decided to launch an internal drug war of their own, executing on average about 1000 drug dealers a month. So if China wants to invade, as far as I'm concerned, its not my problem.
Wish them luck because they're going to need it.
Perhaps they should have practiced a little solidarity instead of killing people over something as stupid as the drug trade.
You can never be secure because you can't afford the resources it would require, ever. You need a person to monitor a system physically as well as virtually at all times. And even then there are ways to transmit data that are not obvious. So unless you are God you are not secure.
Just when you think you have a system locked down someone walks it right out your front door with a big smile on their face. Social engineering perhaps is the cause of this insecurity as Kevin Mitnick pointed out in his latest book. Its like trying to hold a dam together as more and more holes sprout open. You run out of fingers, then toes, then what do you do? Do you still believe you can be secure? Ha!

a trend that shows computer users are not only downloading songs, but copying and burning CDs.
A trend that shows computer users are burning a lot of CDs. A CD can be used for a RedHat iso or a collection of files just as easily as it can be used for audio music. Hell, with modern compression you can fit a DVD quality movie on a CD.
They have no proof, but they love to make accusations.
No nation on earth would nuke the US - it would be suicide.
Better hope Palestine doesn't get any nukes.
I think NK would attempt to nuke the US if we pushed them hard enough. Remember, a couple million of their people were killed by us during Nam. Similar to our sanctions against Iraq. That tends to make a few enemies and terrorists out of the survivors and their children.
I just hope it all was worth it. I'm going to be rather disappointed in our government if these wars don't bring freedom and peace to all the poor peoples of the world.
Try before you buy kicks ass! I got to download some high quality mp3s from this Global Peace Movement CD. And since its not affiliated with the RIAA I had no excuses not to buy it.:)
I'm happy to pay $15 a CD, although I know its only worth $1. But I go out of my way to buy music from independant artists that are not associated with the RIAA.
If they lowered their price to $1 I might reconsider my personal boycott.;)
Oh, and don't boycott on my account. Be yourself. Think for yourself. I wouldn't have it any other way.
I don't see how they could go after freenet. I don't think they're smart enough and freenet is fairly well protected.
Instead of calling it marijuana
You mean Cannabis? Marijuana is the derogatory term the US government uses to refer to that harmless plant.
This "trend" started when Judge Kaplan in the MPAA v. 2600 case said that linking to something is a "distinction without a difference".

For example, if you were planning to start a colony on Mars...
or build an international space station..
You may be thinking about Sinapore...

I'm sorry, you're right, it was in Thailand not Taiwan. Big difference. My bad. :P
how long until America becomes a completely corporate-run state with a puppet government to speak for it, again?
You mean its not a completely corporate-run state today? How many representatives and cabinet members are execs or CEOs within corporations?
Whatever, I sympathize with Taiwan.

What's so enlightened about self-interest?
There is no spoon. Security is an illusion.

Tell me something I don't know.
But I think sharing data is the first step towards wisdom.
If you don't share, you are not wise.

How big a military does a country need with the threat of nuclear war or biological warfare?
War has changed considerably since the 1800s. I think it scares the shit out of all of us today.
I'm happy to pay $15 a CD, although I know its only worth $1. But I go out of my way to buy music from independant artists that are not associated with the RIAA.

Can you provide me an example? I'd like to know when in my history has the military defended my stuff. And who were they defending it from?
That's funny. Here we are talking about freedom and all your can worry about is your precious iTunes music store.
I hope our freedoms don't inconvenience you. That would be a shame.
Well, for what its worth, thanks. I would have continued to misspell it forever, if you hadn't caught it. :)
:P
I think the meaning of our words is far more important than the spelling. They are merely the transport for communication.
But somehow that message has gotten lost.
Same goes for all social programs, like welfare and taxes to fund the military.
I want my money back, too.
