Right now I think NASA and us Americans are not smart enough to do these things. We'd probably attempt to do them anyone just to stroke our egos and risk more lives.
Let me put it this way. I thought you all cared about money. Don't you know its not profitable to do these things? So why waste the money? We have enough problems with our economy and society today.
Why can't we just admit that we're no longer the most advanced country on Earth, tuck our tail and do what is right for the people. Because we're not that smart.
Which is why all programmers need to read every freakin software patent in existence before they start writing any code. And whenever a new patent is released they must stop what they are doing and go read that patent to make sure they're not infringing on someone else's intellectual property.
Because we all know two people can't be thinking the same thing. That would be illegal.
Personally I'd never hire anyone from SCO, Microsoft or just about any other company I didn't personally like. There are rumors that Microsoft pays spys to infiltrate other companies and take over key management positions, etc. Everything is not what it seems, IMO. And I wouldn't trust anyone from those companies. Brainwashing is a very suttle thing. And its very easy to manipulate capitalists, or just about anyone who watches commercials.
Well, I don't think one man can be intelligent enough to construct a society that takes care of everyone. I think it requires the cooperative effort of everyone. Anarchy might be a little extreme, but I think government should be limitted to a very small set of responsibilities. And people should for whatever organization is necessary to provide for everyone. We have so many examples of how a company can be organized, it just takes a little creativity to imagine how we could organize them into a form that provides for everyone, makes the jobs more enjoyable and much more efficient, and takes money out of the picture. But I'm a sys admin, not a politician. So its all just a theory 'n shit and I'm sure it will never be attempted. Nor do I think it should be. Cuz what do I know.
I think I'm an anarchist. Not convinced communism is a bad thing yet, but most people seem to think it is. I just don't like money, I think its a waste of time.
To put it another way, "shoot 'em all and let natural selection sort 'em out."
I really wish we could find a way to work together instead of manipulate eachother for profit or war. We seem to preach tolerance and BS, then go and bomb a people like they're some alien race. Its really very sad.
But if we can't all get along here on Earth, maybe we can in Heaven. Or wherever our actions send us.
All that is lost is the comforting life some ignorant masses could have enjoyed. Us anarchists and communists love the smell of fear and terror and revolution. >;)
Wherever it may lead, it is change, and maybe in some ways even progress. I believe it will eventually lead to utopia. When people collectively figure out what they want out of life.
Maybe one group of people will declare their way of life superior and commit mass genocide on the rest who can't agree. But in the end, when they are the only people living, it will be their utopia.
What does love mean to these people? To me it means sharing and giving and stuff. RMS might have contributed as many lines of code to the GNU project as Linus.
So if he's not loveless I guess he's just your stereotypical bearded hippie, huh. Well, hippies are cool, so what does stratjakt have against bearded people? Dunno, but he's probably a freakin racist.
You got it, but unfortunately we both cost too much and the guys paying the bills don't care about our happiness. In fact they care more about our time on the job, working, instead of just getting the work done efficiently.
time == life, so if they waste my time they waste my life and that is something I won't put up with for much longer.
When Apollo 13 is mentioned I always get to thinking that maybe without so many patents we wouldn't have to figure out how to fit a square peg into a round hole.
Why don't these engineers communicate with eachother, work together to build the best products, reuse those designs for future products, etc. I hope its not because its not profitable.
That reminds me of Jeb Bush preparing to declare marshall law on Sep 7th, 2001. We're coming up fast on the anniversary of that day all those people died in vein. Forgot what it was called tho.
Hey, I bet the Nazi's were good customers and paid lots of money! Money is a good reason to sell anyone anything. Even WMDs. Never stopped ol' Uncle Sam.
Well what use are they then? I agree with the parent, hubble should be looking for more oil to improve the economy! That's why we built the thing, isn't it?
I know its illegal and all, but don't you have to damage the RIAA in some way before they can sue you? If you're giving away their stuff for free I don't see how this damages them. If you were selling it and thus taking their money, then of course you should pay.
Its interesting how they make it sound like they're losing billions, but where's that money? Nobody seems to be exchanging billions of dollars, billions of bits perhaps, but those are really cheap.
We have the technology today to make all the money anyone would ever want. How about we give everyone 3 billion dollars. Would that make us happy?
Money is the force that halts our technical progress. Take computers for example. They will continue to move forward and advance in performance, but they are already faster than our needs. We could use them to automate most of the jobs people have to do today. But we won't, until it becomes profitable. And then those people will be out of work.
There are no solutions to this problem as I see it. As long as we insist on maintaining a capitalist society and perspective on life.
Or better yet never post a freakin nytimes link. I'm sick of stealing their IP. It makes me feel bad.
I'll sign up and read their news paper when I feel like it and have nothing better to do with the money. There are plenty of alternative sources for information.
If they can legislate innovation can't they legislate more jobs? Or are they too busy legislating.
As someone else posted it seems to be more fun during election years. :)
And then we killed him for doing it and making some other politicians look bad.
I'll believe it when I see it.

Go make more money! That's what we're good at.
Something that's not patented.
Which is why all programmers need to read every freakin software patent in existence before they start writing any code. And whenever a new patent is released they must stop what they are doing and go read that patent to make sure they're not infringing on someone else's intellectual property.

Wow, I had no idea Bruce Perens was such a whiney brat. :)
ESR kicks ass!
bearded loveless hippie?

Start your own business. Compete!

I like the anarchist approach to these things. Each person for themselves. If you lose your privacy, that's your problem, not mine. :)
I know people like to get all "Ooh, war = bad. weapons = bad." But, believe it or not, we already have enough power to destroy the world.
Ooh, destroy the world = bad. *nod*
Military industrial complex is a psychological term, it is a state of mind. And we're still in it.
That reminds me of Jeb Bush preparing to declare marshall law on Sep 7th, 2001. We're coming up fast on the anniversary of that day all those people died in vein. Forgot what it was called tho.
What about people like me who sit in my cube and look busy, playing Minesweeper all day?
Bean counters are stupid.
Hey, I bet the Nazi's were good customers and paid lots of money! Money is a good reason to sell anyone anything. Even WMDs. Never stopped ol' Uncle Sam.
I use my time for living. This is, afterall, the only life I get.
Nuclear energy. So clean and cheap and efficient. Its almost worth getting cancer.
no?
Well what use are they then? I agree with the parent, hubble should be looking for more oil to improve the economy! That's why we built the thing, isn't it?

There is more to life than money, btw.
