They're living in a dreamworld, Neo. They think their unskilled jobs will be around forever and money will never be hard to earn. But what will they do if they're wrong?
Think of it this way, as long as you work for money someone has a leash around your neck. When you give up that system and give up the symbolic chains of money you can rebuild a system where people work because they want to work and those that don't won't interfere with the people who want to do it right.
Capitalism will eat itself alive. It is based on greed and nobody will want to allow their wealth to be redistributed to those who aren't working. They'll remain poor as long as the wealthy have any say in it. And they do, believe me. They have more manipulative power than you could possibly imagine.
Well, here's how it'll happen in a capitalist society. Robots will perform the labor, when they are available, and replace workers. Those workers will have to go back to school to become educated for another job that robots can't perform at a lower expense. Very few labor jobs will survive the next decade.
Then computers will advance to the point of being capable of running AI that is as intelligent as the average American. It won't be very difficult to build within 20-30 years. Americans just aren't that smart. So after that time those of us who are employed for our ability to think will no longer be necessary. Then we'll have a majority of the population out of work, either relying on welfare or some form of socializm.
Eventually we'll all starve and die. Or we'll choose communism, or probably socialism since we're just too stupid to give up money. I'd laugh if you all joined unions and expected that to help. Hell, I'm laughing right now. It just seems so simple. Why don't you get?
the dot in dotcom? If the dot com era was a fad why is Sun still around?
It was the media that ran the dotcomcrash financial reports, before the market crashed. Remember that the media is owned by about 6 companies. And they don't like competition.
He's not talking about security. He's saying his customers expect his company to innovate its way out of the security problem by adopting other technologies into the OS like voice recognition.
Gates knows that Microsoft doesn't have the time or resources to do things right. But they can still innovate, if they try hard enough.
And I think he's right. If Microsoft puts voice recognition into Longhorn how long will it take the open source community to compete? Security has never been a problem for Microsoft. Their products are always obsolete and insecure by the time they are released. Their problems are just in outmaneuvering their competition. As long as they look like they are the most technically capable OS security is a minor problem.
Or God forbid we asked the help of the Russians to safely return out astronauts for us. I'd personally much rather reenter our atmostphere in a Soyuz, from what I hear, than a flimsy shuttle. Even if something goes wrong you'd still have a good chance of surviving.
The way I see it is there are many way to communicate with modern technology. If you're too lazy to implement one of them then you probably don't want to communicate with me.
He's guilty because he's alleged to have written one of the most popular viruses this year. And the virus had to cost at least billions, if not trillions of dollars in damage to countless corporations, governments, Windows users, etc.
All those victims want someone to hang for what they did and they finally put a face on that someone. See, today we don't need real evidence when secret evidence will work good enough. The people will believe both. And all they really want is someone to pay, preferably with their life. Because it makes us feel better, or maybe safer, but they're really the same thing.
I mean, nobody in their right mind could ever blame Microsoft. They didn't know it was insecure until it was too late. Its not their fault. They'll try harder next time.
This is why everyone should be using Windows.. so Microsoft has the money to fix these problems before they happen.
Can you design something to be secure? Not when you're worried about money.
Has capitalism failed us? No?
Then how do you recommend we fix all these broken things? I think there are enough broken/insecure things today that I shouldn't need to spell them out.
After 9/11 we became paranoid. But for the wrong reasons. Everything is insecure. Because there aren't enough people to police everything all the time.
This means that unless everyone is a happy employee they might be working for the other side. And the other side provides a much more entertaining work environment than corporate America, meaning they will most likely be more intelligent than you.
Our culture, like NASA, is the problem. Capitalism defines our culture. See the problem?
If capitalism can't produce the games you want to play maybe you should rethink your form of society. It seems to be working just fine for me. I love GTA3: Vice City.
This is not a problem we can solve unless we're willing to look at all possible solutions. But most of you are too closed-minded. That's fine, not my problem. Just quite your bitchin.
Okay, so you're saying it was ignorance that made them spin off Mozilla.org? I'm not saying they did anything malicious toward the project, but they didn't listen to reason when it was screaming at them as loud and politely as it could.
I'm sorry, but I don't think this can be attributed to ignorance either. Perhaps stupidity, but certainly not ignorance.
There's no money is OSS. You can't invest in it like you can in SCO. So of course the media wants SCO to win.
Plus who owns the media? AOLTW, MSNBC, ABC, Fox.. basicly all the members of the MPAA and a few of the RIAA. They use windows on their desktops and want to promote global commercialization of the planet.
I know this is a big thing for CNN readers, but slashdot?
Its just pictures. We've got thousands of those. We sent a freakin probe to survey the geography of the planet. What's so big about this? Is it so close you can almost touch it? Ooo, purty shiney red planet. *snapsnapsnap*
Its much deeper than that. Its money. Its how we force NASA to manage money.
They're doing the impossible. They should have the resources to do it without worrying about money. But its impossible for our capitalist system to provide that kind of support to all those engineers, workers, managers, etc. So no matter what changes we make it all always come back to money.
Their culture is based entirely on money. Managers wouldn't have their authority without it. The most intelligent engineers would have authority. But I can explain this over and over again until I run out of breath and it will just go in one ear and out the other.
I also like this phylosophy.
What happens when unskilled jobs cease to exist?
We die.
They're living in a dreamworld, Neo. They think their unskilled jobs will be around forever and money will never be hard to earn. But what will they do if they're wrong?

I stopped using a telephone.

Fact for the day: The US imprisons a larger percentage of its population than ANY other nation on earth.
And that percentage doubled within the last 5 years. Boy, we must have a lot of criminals or something.
awww, they called you a troll, too.
:)
Guess you can't comment about post-911 America anymore. Its probably not even protected by the 1st.
Some people can't handle the truth.

Stop making excuses for market forces.
There are no excuses.

I just read this on osnews.
GNOME or KDE?
Pepsi or Coke?
I think we should standardize on Coke. Everyone agree? Alright then.

Why? AOLTW is the largest media company in existence.
Computers are a tool used by hackers.
And Americans are really dumb.
I wonder what the RIAA will come up with next.
This dinosaur should be a riot!
Maybe even a stampede,
if we're lucky.
There's no money is OSS. You can't invest in it like you can in SCO. So of course the media wants SCO to win.

At least it seems quite obvious to me anyway.
That's assuming you use the same code in the P4 and G5 ports of gcc.
I think a better comparison would be Itanium/Itanium2, Opteron and the G5. Or at least Athlon64.
Maybe they should call it whine, then.

that there are no excuses.
But how does this relate to NASA?
I don't know. I don't work there and my opinion won't change a thing.
Its much deeper than that. Its money. Its how we force NASA to manage money.

Well, good money to ya. May you die rich.
