    Diesel does contain less sulphur than it used to, but the sulphur actually acted as a lubricant within the engine, now engines are wearing out faster than before, *(80% faster), rebuilding or replacing the engines in itself is very costly and fuel consuming and potentially polluting; (You can't win). Diesel in any form is polluting, yes! Also as with internal combustion engines most energy used is converted into heat and wasted. ( You can't even break even.) Alcohol added to fuel today in gasohol form is being used in Gasoline engines of all types, many older vehicles were not designed for alcohol use, and the pollution control systems from older engines were not designed for alcohol use. This leaves much fuel being used in systems that do indeed cause some exotic pollution. Also the cost added to gasoline by alcohol is increasing the price of a product already high. Alcohol evaporates at a much lower temperature than gasoline, and in older vehicles that do not have a sealed system this can cause an accelerated evaporation of the fuel from the tank, and these unburned petroalcohol fumes are then added as is to the atmosphere, to combine in varried forms with other molecules from other sources, and the consumer wonders if he has a fuel leak or are his neighbors stealing his gas...Much of the corn grown "Not for Human consumption" is genetically altered to produce it's own insect free biochemicals. This corn is mainly used in the Alcohol production arena. But it does use up lands taken away from food production. Also at this point in history, there is another major problem caused by Bee colony disorder, that has caused a major decrease in bee populations. The disorder has not been linked to genetically altered crops, but if the Bees are dying then expect an incredible increase in food costs! Ten dollars a gallon for gas? How about ten dollars for a small bag of almonds? If all things in agriculture will effect the prices over the board then food will skyrocket at the same time alcohol goes up as well. Lose/lose. Also if these genetically altered corn crops are used as a base for alcohol production, there has to be considered the possibility of adding exotic pesticides to the gasohol blends to be burned and dispersed by vehicles. How many chemicals are being tested for in specific alcohols that will be introduced into the air that we all breathe?All in all, these alcohol blends may be reducing our supply of fuel instead of increasing it when considered as it is actually being used, and adding to the complexity of air pollution compounds.{This is an old answer, but it is right; Electric Motors are the answer!             I'd like to state at the beginning , that this post is not for points , a zero is fine by me , just want you to know I really mean the next sentence . I thank Slashdot for going ahead and publishing this story ; you had to know it would generate some heat, also for keeping it up when it seemed there were those that would rather it not remain. A big thumbs up for integrity.
    As for the story, there were many important parts that are being missed; the lives of the Astronauts, granted they signed on for the job, but space is a cold unforgiving mistress, and there is so little room for error, we should give them every chance they can have.Also note that in the slightest chance that something could go wrong, this is an International Space Station. International means that Nations would be pointing fingers at Nations, the World situation does not need further problems right now. There have been many cuts in recent years in R&D budgets, if there was a spectacular failure in space, then expect science cuts everywhere ! There were some comments about; just fix the gyro problem, there is no emergency . My point exactly , but changing is not at the top of the list at NASA, I felt I had to report this as I have been on this story for over 2 weeks. You may think this all happened on the 11th, but I have read and posted on mission reports of this gyro problem for weeks and asked why was this story not going public ? By the way I was sent an url from a local TV station near the Space Center about the need for changes on the upcoming mission here it is;
    http://www.wesh.com/news/10057885/detail.html

    From this story it would seem a change was in the works, but as another mentioned in the comments, on the other hand , they are proceeding with the mission as scheduled. Smoke and mirrors, there are more politics running this than the scientists. I wish the Rocket Scientists WERE allowed to do their jobs. They have pointed out the problems!

            As for the comments about the author, I accept any blame for errors that I may have made. But from the number of detractors on such a worthless and undeserving story, I am reminded of a quote from Shakespeare's play Hamlet ; "The lady doth protest too much". And there was one particular comment framed as sarcastic reply : "Mysterystevenson to the rescue!" Ok aside from the intent, I had to laugh, it really was funny. I mean I loved it. LOL , LOL ,LOL... I actually now have that posted on my wall in multicolored letters.A friend dropped by and cracked up too.LOL. Anyhow I did get some emails, and a confidential thankyou, and was asked why don't I respond ? I said I will, and I am now , but I like to let a pot cook and taste before I season. That is not to take away from the importance of this issue , but it can be reviewed now as a whole and hence a summary is in order. I am not a detractor of the space program, in fact I wish it would speed up considerably in a safe manner, or as safe as is reasonable and marked by sound judgement. Problem is they have not been given the funds to do the job, and are being ordered to go ahead despite any situation.

As to the potential of explosives on board, there is no need to bring your own, Alcohol is available and could easily used. Intelligence is the only way to get a grip on this. The terrorists are using foolish tactics, anytime an attacking agent is going to die with every encounter, they guarantee a reduction in their own forces instantly. Yes in wars, there are the pawns, and at critical points they are lost as a military requirement. This dying for terror is not working, it does not scare people as the terrorists think, in fact they look stupid, and obviously have very poor strategists. It will not take too much longer for the followers to walk away. Stupidity is what it is and will not take long to fail. On the political front; they behave as cowards in attacking civilians and not directing attacks at military targets only. This is cowardice, and no military or religious organization would support a cowardly war plan.On the other hand the US is also taking the low road which is also not too wise ! The US should capitalize on the flaws in the terrorist's political behavior, instead they are punishing US citizens and taking away liberties and rights. There are so many weak points in any nation, that the real security would come from an empowered civilian population. I am reminded of an article that came out quite a while ago, whereby it was demonstrated that 50,000 people die every year in the US from car accidents, see; http://www.cdi.org/polling/34-swatting-fly.cfm/ The fact that more people die from car accidents every year, than have died from all the terrorist attacks, and all of our war dead combined, in the last TEN years helps put the terrorist actions in a perspective. If we reacted to car accidents as we are to terrorists, then in an anology we would have strict speed limits of about 25 mph on highways. Random police road blocks would examine the mechanical condition of vehicles with strict enforcement of worn parts,brake pads, tires, and so on. Prison sentences would be stiff for such attempted murder by car. There would be a need to monitor phone conversations in case someone admitted having any fault in the vehicle they own. Car parts stores would need very special attention, special papers would be required on all transactions of parts for these horrible death machines that everyone would need to fear, and the greatest killer of Americans would need to be the Headline of all newspapers. An at fault accident could bring the death sentence or at very least life imprisonment without possibility of communication with normal road fearing, patriotic Americans ! The greatest Killer of Americans would need to be controlled completely, and discussion of risky driving behavior would possibly entail conspiracy charges. WE LOSE more Americans by far by accident than through all the moronic attempts by these terrorists, The Terrorists are not effective and we should not give up our rights because of paranoid politicians that may have other agendas anyhow. All the terrorists are accomplishing is pushing more and more of our tax dollars to go to Israel, because these genetic brothers can't get along with each other. The terrorists have done more to support Israel than all the special interests groups combined. The Islamic leaders need to start a peace movement. Israel needs to love their brothers and the Islamic people need to Love their Israel brothers. I note that in some comments the actual use of nuclear weapons is mentioned. That is deplorable, our president claims a Christian faith, and that is his business, but Christians are supposed to love their enemies, and turn the other cheek. Killing over faith without love is an abomination, no matter who does it. The only possible use of a nuclear device would be deep beneath the surface, where no humans would be hurt, but the entire oil fields would become radioactive and worthless. That would
