I am a linux SA for a fortune 250 company. We use RedHat on 500 servers, not cause I like that distrobution the most, but because its certified with our applications, jboss, oracle, webjet, etc. We can't do billion dollar database transactions and be SOX compliant with out being able to show certifications of applications. Thats just how it is folks
We have a 60TB EMC SAN with the NAS frontend application as well. It has been nothing but headaches and problems since we got it and we regreat the purchase every single day. We also use RSA, most notably for our vpn token links. I would hate to see something reliable and workable like RSA solutions go to crap because of EMC
While some of the geek squad people are indeed idiots, some of the work they arn't allowed to do with out having it shipped off. They are not allowed to do os reinstalls, sometimes they are not even allowed to do drive replacements or driver installs based on what kind of service contract the customer does or does not have. While you may be upset that you get a lot of crap from them 80% isn't stuff they want to send you, its stuff they have to send you. Best Buy Corp Office is filled with morons who couldn't find their own...(your word here) with both hands and a map.
I also have my LPI Cert. And this bood did help me quite a bit. My only problem with the book is some of the editing. Twards the end of the book it seems like they got someone who has no idea what linux is to edit. Server commands are listed with the same switches and stated that they do different things.
For example
ls -l
this gives a long listing of files in the current dir
ls -h
this gives a long listing of files in the current dir
(and just for ya'll the h is human terms when used with an l)
However this plus several years of linux experiance did help me with my test quite a lot.
I don't try to push anything on anyone. But I do alwasy try to suggest an opensource app. Most developers of open source apps(at least the ones I know) do there work for free and just like to see that people use it. And some apps are just downright great programs. I won't belittle someone for using a closed source program. In fact I advicate a few. But I also always suggest that they try out firefox if for no other reason than the better virus protection it will give them with out IE's holes.
Yes, I did have dvd playback with a hardware decoder on this same box and with powerdvd, what I ment was with linux's default dvd decoding since it is all reverse engineered.
I love linux, even have my LPI level1, so of course I wanted to try to build a mythtv box. I bought a pvr-350, and even though I don't really like fedora I followed the instructions at www.wilsonet.com. It works great.. Here are my specs
256 megs of ram
p2 400
I am using the hardware decoding which cancels out the ability to watch dvds on this box, but hey a p2 400 wouldn't handle that anyway. I have perfect tv playback and recording, without my processor hardly every droping below 85% idle. The system is wonderful and I suggest to anyone trying to build one of these systems on a low end box to get the pvr-350. If you happen to have a power house you can put it in.. a 1.5ghz or higher save some money and go with the pvr-250, your backups will take up half the space and your output should be just as nice. Plus you will get dvd playback and can use the other nice mythtv features such as mythmusic and mythgame
I eneded my anounymus coward status for this....
I am an IT Professional.. I type this from a linux boot, running gentoo installed via vlos linux (didn't care for vlos) using Epiphany...
That being said.. I always tell my customers you need the right tool for the job. Which isn't always linux based. Most linux users however are so sure of there superiority to all other users that they won't listen or sometimes, even behave to windows users. It is more likely that some of the questions submitted where just not the kind of language that would be used in polite society over dinner.
