  1. Re:So what? He's just forked a GPL project. on CherryOS Mac Emulator Resurfaces · · Score: 1

But in any case there must be a file called "LICENCE" in the program folder (or somewhere revelant according to your OS). And the file is missing.

So basically he's forking a GPL software and switchs to a non-free licence : that's wrong. If he effectively put the program under GPL (which doesn't seem to be the case anyway) I'll be totally OK with the fork and the selling of the software.

I didn't indend to "rip on" you anyhow so I'm sorry if I was a bit rude. And I think I have understood the GPL quite well actually, thank you :)

  2. In related news... on Is VoIP Google's Next Frontier? · · Score: 3, Funny

    Google launches Google Monitor !

Google Executives introduced today the latest of Google services, based on Google VoIP.

Google Monitor will record every VoIP conversation Google and its partners route, and will allow you to search for vocal patterns to match a particular conversation you had you would like to listen again.

Sadly, the day turned awkward when it was reported on Slashdot, the (in)famous technologist blog, that searching for "Google and dominance of the world, we 0wn j00 n00b haha and BillG sux dickz" (sic!) in the Google Monitor Search Engine and clicking the "I'm lucking" button directed to a private conversation Larry Page and Sergey Brin had about this very service.

"We were simply high, man", declared the Google founders when we asked them for further explanations.

Well, it definitely explains many moves the company from Montain View had these last few years.

(I don't endorse this comment, I'm testing a beta quantum computer at my local university and it seems the Quantum Leap put some text from the future in my paste buffer ;) Or it seems I share something with the Larry/Sergey from the future :p)

  3. Re:So what? He's just forked a GPL project. on CherryOS Mac Emulator Resurfaces · · Score: 5, Insightful

Happens all the time. If anyone claims CherryOS is a bit suspect perhaps the same could be said about a number of the *BSDs. Ok , he's been a bit underhand but as far as I can see he's done nothing wrong and hasn't violated the GPL.

That's where you're wrong not only for the OBVIOUS reason "if you fork a GPL software it must remain GPL" (and I just downloaded the installer and afaik the code IS NOT distributed along), but also because he denied having forked PearPC, where the GPL forces to keep the copyleft of the original authors (ok you can still say "it's my software I coded it all alone last saturday" and let the copyleft in the code, but then everybody can read it if it's GPL'd, so I think giving credit to the legitimate authors is something that the GPL implies)

Even if the PearPC licence had been more permissive (MIT or BSD style), he would still be a moron who cannot even admit he just took the code.

In the current case however, he's just a thief and I hope the PearPC developpers will get some support to sue and get the GPL tested in an US court.

  4. Just like Vinyl to CD on Old Film to DVD Transfers Examined · · Score: 0, Redundant

Unfortunately, remastering music or films often take a part of their souls.

No wander why many music fans (I'm thinking Jazz, Classic music) are still buying used vinyl discs.. The music seems to have more "spirit" that way. It feels roots :)

There's even a software that immitates the glitches from vinyls discs and plays MP3 that way, adding noise. (The good thing is that the MP3 won't slowly decay to finally become unreadable... oh yeah it will but it will take much longer and can easily be transfered to a newer support).

Now I'm waiting for an option in mplayer
    --addnoise={retro40,retro50,...,80movies,)
... so I can have remastered DVDs look the way they were BEFORE ;)

  5. Re:GPL patent anyone? on Computer Associates Pledges to Open Source Patents · · Score: 2, Interesting

the GPL patent can only used with other GPL patented product. In this case, commercial product with patent in would not be able to use it :)

I guess you mean "closed" software, since a software being licensed under GPL has nothing to do with it being commercial or not.

Thus said, the goal of a patent is first and foremost to make money to justify innovation (that shouldn't apply to softwares but it does at least in the US and in Japan). Therefore, I think CA and IBM have done quite good with their patent opening to the free software community. They can still get money from licensing their patent and suing proprietary software companies for infringing their patent, and still the OSI approved licensed projects are safe from attack.

Nevertheless, they're only opening *SOME* of their patents, and I really think they should make bigs efforts to be clear on WHICH patents they are opening.

Anyway, that's a small consolation for having software patents. Go European Parliament :)

Flamebait ? I thought it was funny. I am OK with the Linux/Unix assertion, being myself targeted... The problem is, I don't run Windows at all and I still drink wine. Being for stoner AND alchoolic, I guess I'll just have to switch to BSD... so I can die along with it :)

  7. In related news... on Star Wars Episode III To Open Cannes · · Score: 1

A pirate has been taken at the opening of the Cannes festival screening the Star Wars Episode III world premiere.

When asked why he would screen it where he was sure to be catched, he replied "I coudln't wait any longer to see another masterpiece like Episode I and II ...!".

Star Wars, "The Revenge of the Sith", will air in everyone else theater in a week, may 19.

Seriously, if the movie is as good as the two former, it might win the "worst use of a great franchise palm". And this just is another ad.
