It's utterly absurd. Under my TV I have a DVD player, a Wii, a DVR and a cable box. Out of those, only the DVR needs to be on all the time. The DVD player is the only device with a proper off button. It was also the cheapest. The rest of them (including the TV) offer no alternative but to switch them off at the wall. The EU is supposed to be doing something about this though...
I agree with the parent. I would say that in the majority of cases the freeware/free software for a particular task is as good or better than the Windows or Linux equivalent, but the shareware version is better still. Apple's development tools seem to encourage (and make it easier for) people to write higher quality software.
Yeah, fuck civil rights. Black people shouldn't have made such a fuss about where they could sit on buses, they should have sucked it up and let the free market handle it.
You're forgetting that buses have routes chosen to avoid tight squeezes, and lorries either avoid small roads or are banned from them. My village has a small industrial park in it, and lost European lorry drivers often have great difficulty negotiating it if they don't know the correct route in for large vehicles.
Safari on OS X is written in Cocoa, which is a native framework. To get Safari working on Windows, Apple ported some of Cocoa. The ported version of Cocoa is significantly less stable and efficient.
If you watch the video you'd se how it works. Instead of respawning at a checkpoint, you respawn at the point that your feet left the ground. This allows you to try the particular challenge you failed again without the tedium of getting there first.
The belief that the command line is the One True Interface is one of the more irrational ideas I have encountered on Slashdot. Clearly, it's faster for a minority, I assume you are included, but for the vast majority, a GUI is faster, easier and less dangerous. But I wouldn't expect you to respond to any kind of rational argument anyway, since you've already resorted to name calling.
Texts are sent in a small data block which is transferred to the tower whether or not you choose to send one, in part of the 'Are you still there', 'Yes I am' messages sent between tower and phone every so often. There is no extra bandwidth used by sending a text.
Is a correction not a relevant contribution? I would say prompting for a password is significantly different from presenting a button. It requires more conscious thought. And the what the hell are you talking about seeing the source of the patch? There are plenty of people who are competent computer users who are not programmers. Why should they not be allowed to administrate computers? And finally, since when is stating the truth caused by the 'reality distortion field'?
I think a lot of the vitriol comes from people who believe the constitution to be inherently perfect, and beyond criticism. Obviously the United States needs in some ways to be held tighter to the constitution, as the last eight years have shown, but many parts of the constitution describe a United States which no longer exists.
I have found that using an advert blocker dramatically improved performance for me. I have found two methods for doing this in Safari. The first is to use an input manager hack called Safari AdBlock. I've had no problems with it, but it's completely unsupported and can break after updates. The second is to use a local proxy as explained here.
Firstly, as people have said previously in the thread, the mosquito digests the DNA in the blood within hours of eating it. That implies that the suspect was in the car recently. Secondly, the DNA provides a lead, even if it cannot later be used as actual evidence.
What exactly are you doing in Safari? I'm using Safari (or rather WebKit nightlies) on a Mac mini core solo with 1 GB of memory, and it runs perfectly fine. The only time I have problems is if I start up a really hungry program like Aperture, or leave lots of apps that I'm not using running.
Unfortunately, for most of the UK, Virgin Media have a monopoly on cable internet. ADSL just isn't as fast.
No, you're scum if you illegally delete the emails.

Only a few weeks ago, Amazon opened the MP3 store in the UK. A little too late though, now that Apple has removed a core reason for people to use it.

So it's a coincidence that they're Muslims? FYI they were not discussing bombs, they were talking about the safest place to sit in an aeroplane.
I bet the xenophobic idiot who reported their 'suspicious comments' is pleased with themselves, having delayed their flight by 2 hours.

And any kind of Hummer is too wide to be practical on a lot of British roads anyway.

I fairness, most people's reaction to Jeremy Clarkson is to reach for a gun.
I think he was talking about the royal family. Calling them inbred is not exactly controversial.

No, it asks for an admin password.

Just like the iPhone is a failure due to its lack of Flash support.
Well there is and they did.
Depends on your definition of 'personal' files. Video can take up a lot of space.
