So as dozens of slashdotters click on these links to preserve the documents the servers register a massive rush on obtaining "Technologies related to production of high yield nukular weapons". The fools that though up this assinine policy now have their cannon fodder.
There are days I wonder how coherently manipulative these clowns really are. Seems to me getting a bunch of uber lefties to run screaming foul and then reveal the truth to show that they got worked up over nothing...over...and over...and over...well there is this story about a boy who cried wolf... Nevermind that Sheehan and Moore are huge favors to the administration with their moronic antics...they get to demonstrate over and over how insane people who disagree with them are. So now we have geeks screaming about suppression of science, downloading tons of rocketry information, and I see two wonderful claims of the administration. "We were taking down the old stuff to put up things representing our future rather than focusing on the past, we created digital archives of all the old stuff, and here is our new future focus view!" (and the people crying about science are made to look fools and totally discredited) OR "See! This is why we had to do it! Look how many potential terrorist organizations made a rush to gather missile technology, be happy that we are keeping you safe".
The worst thing is I can't figure out if this is funny or sad.
King George is the fucking poster child for terrorist recruitment, so no I'm not surprised, this mess has been handled in just about the worst possible way short of nukularing everyone. Which by the way he tried early on when he was pressing for research for smaller tactical nukes that he could use easier. However, the Taliban is not simply a case of they do things we don't like. Unlike Iraq they were sponsoring terrorism, saying they are not terrorist means that the US is not guilty of a whole list of crimes that we paid other people to do for us. The issue with Germany isn't anywhere near on the same level...we can send diplomats to eachothers countries and let them argue it out... Not exactly possible with Taliban folks...you send a diplomat and you are likely to find a video of him on the internet getting his head lopped with guys screaming allallalalalala. Not that I condone any of our moron soldiers have done, trust me, it pisses me the hell off that those retards managed to make the entire US military look like psychotic torturers, hell I think we should strip em of their uniforms and drop em in the center of Iraqi towns and see if they are so willing to be pricks then, but quite frankly...I would rather be stacked up in a naked man pyramid than to go through a fraction of what the people we are fighting do to those they capture. Just because we are wrong on a great number of ways we have handled this, does not make them any less psychotic and deserving of being blasted.
I think our greatest failure in Afghanistan is ol King George pulling the switcheroo so he could justify invading Iraq and getting us drug into the middle of a civil war, while refusing to acknowledge that, and surging troops and otherwise stretching the military to its breaking point by having absolutely nothing that resembles a plan other than "Well, uh, I'm gunna shoot em some more!" Afghanistan has basically been forgotten, and all the resources that should be going there to finish the job correctly have been redirected to Iraq.
No...they are 'presumed' innocent...which is a far cry from being innocent. You can arrest a murderer or rapist and leave them locked up awaiting trial. Granted the military tribunal nonsense that Shrub King wants is garbage. Innocent until proven guilty is not the same thing as everyone seems to thing...or we would have rapists and murderers running about in the streets waiting for trials...and that is most certainly is not how it works or is meant to work.
I think you are taking the "foreign aggressor" thing a bit to far in the case of the Taliban. There is quite a bit of local support for the US in Afghanistan. Afghanistan was an ENTIRELY different situation than Iraq. Afghanistan wound up the way it did because of the whole US vs Soviets thing...the Soviets tried to move in and murder everyone...the US showed up and armed and trained the populace to kill soviets. The unfortunate side effect is a bunch of sick and twisted bastards got a bunch of guns and training and after the Soviets left because they were getting slaughtered, and the US left because "we were never here"...these armed thugs took over and formed the Taliban and now that they had power were able to enforce their rule of terror. So terrorist organization or not, the Taliban and its supporters were an organization of sick power hungry bastards and folks like Mr Innocent David Hicks shoulda been pushed out of the $500,000 chartered aircraft as it flew him home. Even when you do count the fact that some of those people were probably defending their homes (which is not the same as defending terrorists or the Taliban), and were probably scared out of their minds in the middle of the night...I know whether I was the target or not I would probably grab my gun and start shooting at anything unfamiliar if I was woken up like that. But Mr Innocent there...what the hell was he doing there...it sure as shit wasn't his home now was it...given that he is being sent back to australia. So no...that clown is about the last person on the list to be pointed at as an innocent bystander. He was there looking for a fight and he got what was coming to him. Ackhmed who got woken up in the middle of the night by a night raid and grabbed his gun and shot at the unfamiliar faces...HE is the potentially innocent one.
Just to play devils advocate...exactly where did you get the evidence that the people being held are indeed innocent folks? I mean...I can only assume it is the same media outlets that you decry the unthinking morons for listening to...well okay maybe not quite the same...obviously the spin factor is obviously moving in the opposite directions for your sources, but since it agrees with your preconceived notions of the situation you do not view it as spin...and it is obviously the truth (not so far from the people you decry for saying the opposite). That having been said I suspect that the truth is actually somewhere in the middle...that the people locked up probably were indeed doing things that they should not have been doing...that does not however make them the terrorist masterminds the government makes them out to be, probably about the equal of the common street thug type. This of course does not justify torture (not that anything really does since it has been proven time and time again that torture is not valid for intelligence gathering, unless the US government is willing to claim that the testimony from the nurses that were raped and beaten into saying they intentionally infected children with HIV).
Thankfully for the government there is no shortage of folks so willing to cry and scream foul with rather inflated claims. That way they can take the extreme detractors, prove them wrong, and the people on the fence fall right in line with the government. Sheehan, Moore, these two are probably the freaking heroes of the current administration...they are the poster children for how moronic their detractors are...why do you think they get so much coverage? The truth gets drowned out in the noise and the criminals benefit.
That having been said...Bush isn't exactly responsible for our mess here...Republican and Democrat alike have been fucking about in other governments business, playing them against eachother, mucking with their internal operations, and so on for so long it is no surprise that we have these problems now. America gets to play hero and wave the flag about how they liberated the Iraqi people from Saddam...too bad the Iraqi's remember that it was the US that propped up that asshole in the first place. It was clearly demonstrated that the American people don't need a singular boogeyman after the whole binladen/saddam/saddam/binladen/binladen/saddam SWITCH! gotcha was performed and everyone believed that Saddam was responsible for 9/11. They just need to be spooked by a scary word like "terrorist" and "islamofacist" and the herd mentality kicks in.
What a wonderful system...Kevin Mitnik 5 years no trial...denied review of evidence...can't use a phone for his leet missile launching whistlin skills...child molestor that speaks a rare foreign language...let off the hook because the case had gone for 3 years and they couldn't find a translator because of various problems (like the first translator running out of the room in tears because she couldn't handle the details of the case), nevermind the piece of shit was here attending school IN ENGLISH. So there is no shortage of irrational fear to be had, we need no boogeymen.
No...you cannot take the "only provide education" path. If they are providing internet access of any sort then they are well beyond only providing an education, if they provide dorms, then they are well beyond only providing an education. If you are going to operate a network you need to take responsibility for it, not just toss it out and throw your hands up "we cant do anything about the downloaders and spam zombies, we have no resources" No sympathy...up the rates on internet access if you have to. They are essentially operating a state sponsored ISP. They are a state university and get government dollars, explain to me why my tax dollars should be spent allowing these kids to download shit without recourse while making everything worse for the rest of us who chose to behave legally. Every time the RIAA gets a real downloader it makes their crusade that much more valid. Every time they catch some moron sharing 150GB worth of music its another nail in the coffin of consumer rights.
The universities should be nailing these kids to the wall before the RIAA even gets involved. Academic suspensions, eviction from the dorms, etc. The universities resources are being drained by these people downloading movies and music...you think bandwidth is free?
I'm a little confused I suppose, having not downloaded or purchased music in about 5 years...but why is it an issue? Chasing after grandmothers and kids and dead people I understand is totally fucked up...chasing after college students who in all likelyhood ARE indeed downloading music...not so much sympathy. I think the Universities that are sheltering people are just short of criminal themselves...because while downloading music isnt a criminal offense, interfering with the law is (assuming they ever got the law involved and not just RIAA stormtroopers).
I have no love for the RIAA, but I am about sick of people using the excuse that the RIAA is a bunch of thugs to go ahead and download music. They deserve to get caught, and they deserve to get slapped good for it. You fine a guy $10 for stealing a $10 item and he will just keep stealing $10 items knowing that once n a while he might hafta pay...you fine a guy $1000 for stealing a $10 item and you can bet your ass he will think twice before walking out of the store. Don't pull that "its not stealing" crap in response to this either...just because they use overly inflated numbers and other stupid arguments doesn't mean everyone else gets to respond with moron arguments. It is still depriving someone somewhere regardless of how slimey he or she may be of their income. If bands wanted to get paid they would learn to read, hire a lawyer, and exercise some common fucking sense instead of getting all stupid rockstar happy and signing away. A good friend of mine was approached by a major label and he told them to fuck off because he knew the deal was bullshit.
In fact...it was this rampant music sharing stuff that ultimately allowed the RIAA and crew to completely screw us out of the existing laws that allowed you to burn music CDs and share music and whatnot. The people downloading music/movies/games deserve what they get and are just as much of a pack of greedy morons as the RIAA...they just aren't smart enough to be on the right end of the stick with the teams of lawyers to get their money. I think the Universities should investigate any RIAA claims, and if the University finds sufficient evidence then they should hand them over on a silver platter...if no evidence then the university should back the student...that simple.
Scienologist lies! Care to explain what the hell an E-meter has to do with power savings? This is just a clever ploy to eventually get people to go out and screw with innocent body thetans instead of clubbing those vicious baby seals!
SHUT UP! I have not finished purchasing my stock options in the various sunglasses makers! On top of this, I should turn your ass in to the FBI and Treasury dept so they can freeze your assets for causing harm to the glorious project of Iraqi restoration by teaching insurgents counter techniques. Thanks to the new laws coming in you have NO legal recourse against me for turning your ass in to be hauled off to any of the secret foreign prisons we use so that we don't have to be bothered by those Godless liberals and their laws about torture!
The ISPs aren't selling used hardcopies like in your situation, they are for lack of a better way of describing it, acting as a publisher delivering the authors content with their additions. I don't think it is exactly a traditional clear cut copyright issue, but precious little on the internet IS a clear cut copyright issue as copyright laws weren't exactly written with the whole digital distrobution thing in mind.
Imagine a boycott website with ads being inserted for the product in question. Or even worse in our ever financially driven and politically charged landscape of stupidity and insanity. A website dedicated to candidate of party X having ads inserted being backed by party Y. The potential for unbelievable abuse here is FAR to great to not take a baseball bat to the domes of the people who made the decision to participate in this ad injection.
Not exactly. A book is just a book. Words on paper. A webpage is FAR more visual than text on page (unless you have been sleeping the last few dozen years). Inserting ads could easily be considered a derivitive work since you are altering the look of the site. What if I didn't want ads? What if my design is a nice soft brown and then you start inserting pink flashing ads? Or God forbid, these clowns insert one of those drive by installer ads, now your business reputation is completely screwed because some major ISP decided to make a buck without checking their sources and your website infected thousands of consumers. Good luck explaining to your customers how it was the ISP magically sneaking ads onto your website.
Do we sue the ad folks for inserting ads and stealing content? I mean, in just about any other medium this would wind up in court overnight as copyright and stolen content and so on. But now we have a circumvention tool to detect it...so are we going to get sued under DMCA like nonsense for attempting to circumvent the ad insertion?
You sir need to wake up and smell the shit on capitol hill. The democrats aren't "voting to get us out" are you insane? They are pandering to a whiney war weary populace while soaking up the spoils of a political victory (hooray for lobbyists). They won't do a God damned thing for a few reasons.
They voted for it, the records show it, and if they get to loud they will be crucified by the Republicans and never see another election win.
If they do anything then they could possibly take the blame (legitimate or scapegoated) on why this mess failed, again threatening future elections. Suppose they get Bush out...congratulations non executive VP Cheney becomes non executive President Cheney...yup...sure hope that goes well.
In the meantime, while totally fucking our economy with various nonsense like DMCA, Patents, and our wonderful overseas business, they will hike your taxes up through the rough so worthless sacks of shit can leech welfare. (Note. not all welfare recipients are worthless sacks of shit, but all the ones that I have met that stayed on welfare for any significant amount of time are because it is there to get you on your feet, not take care of you forever). Then we have both of the parties destroying our education system with "thoughtcrime" bullshit whether its "oooh that offended me" or "No god for you!", and then crap like this driving up the cost of education. Perpetuating horrible circular logic trends "The bible is 100% true because it was inspired by God, I know it was inspired by God because the bible said so and it is 100% true!" Damn am I proud to have Fundies smart enough to coin Intelligent Design to try to make a run around that separation of church and state business.
Listen...this pissing contest in the Middle East is jack shit compared to the rather bleak future these clowns on both sides are building for us. Incidentally you can cry about Republicans voting in torture and the like...but why don't you go talk to your fellow citizens who mostly support it. Remember now...no loading the questions...almost all of them support torturing the terrorist...thats what the government sold...they just refuse to be clear on what "terrorist" means...with good reason...else the would have a hard time cutting out large dissenting chucks of American society as possible terrorists and eligible for secret prison torture park stays. The war doesn't mean shit...and if you think for a split second that these psychotic asshole Democrats won't take the powers that the psychotic asshole Republicans voted in and run with them you are insane. Why won't the Dems stop the war...because they need an unbeatable enemy to do the exact same thing the Reps did with passing all these laws "its for your safety!".
How dare you speak of good business practices in this day and age of immediate quarterly gains! I really just don't know if the business folks in charge these days are that stupid, that they just don't understand what they were taught in economics (yes, modern business classes actually do teach how things can and should work out for everyones benefit like a nice and pretty capitolist economy should), or if it is just because so many current business "leaders" got there by inheretence, marraige, or purchase, or maybe it is just greed. But I would think that greed is more than capable of making mutually beneficial deals, so maybe its jealousy that drives the I must have it all and right now behavior.
Uhm...the mafia thing isn't usually a plea bargain, that is usually amnesty/immunity. You give me the get out of jail free card and I will tell you everything...entirely different.
As far as the molestors...the three cases I have been around (unfortunately it happens alot more than most people like to think about). 1. Kid gets 2 years standard probation for admitting to multiple counts of molesting a young girl and doesn't even have to register. 2. Guy gets 6 months jail + 10yr probation for pleading guilty to sexual assault on a child and indecent acts with a child. 3. And this one takes the fucking cake, and I swear to God I will be chearing in the streets if someone in this poor girls family drags this asshole into the street and turns him into a bloody smear that covers the entire block. Young girl is sodomized so badly that she has to go through multiple surgeries to repair the damages and will likely have many physical problems in the future (not to mention the psychological ones). Dear ol sodomizing dad pleads to some watered down form of child abuse because "he was punishing her for pooping her pants, and it was not sexual".
That is why the whole plea deal nonsense is such an abortion of justice. Beyond that...they are lawyers...which as far as I am concerned these days are worse than any mobster. And before anyone goes on about how some lawyers are good and required to defend people...I submit that if the laws weren't written by a bunch of dodgy ass loophole wrangling lawyers in the first place the shit would be pretty clear cut and the common man would be more than capable of defending himself in court in front of a qualified judge. If we didn't have a system based on the sum of 10 million technicalities it wouldn't be such a freaking mess. I am so glad that child molestor recently had his case thrown out because it took 3 years to find a translator in his native language that maybe 100,000 people speak, and the first translator ran out of the room in tears because she was so horrified by the details, nevermind though that he was using english in school...it violated his right to a speedy trial. I bet Kevin Mitnick was wishing he spoke some rare foreign language after that ruling.
Not quite. First this is civil court stuff not criminal court and they are handled entirely differently. Second, Plea deals are such an abortion of justice it is unreal, and its not for the silly extortion claim. Frequently what it boils down to is that the higher crime will take longer to deal with in court, but they still want to get the criminal, so the criminal's lawyer says "hey, you are guilty as sin, and they can probably prove it, but if you plea to this lesser deal you will get a lighter sentence and be done". Frequently Plea deals involve a considerably lighter sentence than what probably would have happened to you if you wasted the courts time and money going through a lengthy trial on something you did.
Look at molestation cases for example. It could be pretty obvious that something was going on, but you have a molestor and a child that doesn't fully understand what is happening as the real witnesses to the actual events. On top of that you don't want to put the child on stage for months forcing them to relive it over and over for the court, because ultimately it should be about helping the child more than extracting revenge. So you give the molestor a deal to end it quickly.
And here is the magic of why that is such nonsense.
1. "Bad" words are only bad becaus they are bad. The idea that there are "bad" words follows the most innane circular logic since "The Bible is true because it was inspired by God and I know that because the Bible says so". The moral police use the most bizaar circular logic and this is it again. If noone cared and noone was offended then noone would use the word to be offensive eh?
2. The more you censor "Bad" words, the more "Bad" they become. The more "Bad" they become the more likely someone is going to use the "Bad" word to attempt to be offensive. Their level of offensiveness was amplified by the stupid attempt to censor said "Bad" word.
3. Any of these fools that support this crap obviously have spent very little time around children (not to say they don't have them, but I imagine most career politicians are probably too busy getting handjobs from hookers on business trips paid for by lobbyists to spend much time bothering to raise their kids). You tell a kid "You can't do X" and the first thing they do when you aren't looking is what exactly? Same goes for "You can't say Y". Good job, you just made it more attractive for them to say "bad" words.
4. An earlier poster had it exactly right, while the verbage may be less offensive (again only made offensive by silly attempts to declare it offensive and taboo), the real problem is rudeness. I don't care what my children say to me, if its a real "bad" word, if its a made up word, or if its normal language, if they are being rude about it they are going to be dealt with swiftly and severely (no not beating, but a good quick barked command will make any kid jump out of his skin). The words used themselves are irrelevant it is about what the intent was when they said them.
"Go hork yourself you sheeprag" and "Go fuck yourself you whore" are going to get equally punished in my book, and only one of them used "bad" words.
So a security researcher specializing in various deep windows stuff should know the ins and outs of every product on the market that has a web interface and whether or not it is secure? There are plenty of products that have reasonably secure web interfaces, Cisco unfortunately has not had the greatest track record. A generic "he should know to disable the web interface" would also translate into shutting down every interactive website, so it would be a matter of knowing which devices have safe interfaces, and once again you are demanding a bit much. I wouldn't trust a cardiologist to work on my joints just because they have both been to medical school. Maybe my problem is that I associate researcher with deep specialization and skills, not "I R knowing sekurity" of the security hobbyist or analyst).
I was trying to be gender neutral because while the largely true stereotype is that only men do it...I have met more than a few women in my days that are just as bad if not worse.
Well...if its any consolation, I am reasonably certain we will have the ability to think with our genitals quite a long time before computers ever master that one, if they even can. Logic be damned!
In your world do all CCIEs know how to manage web servers because a cisco device can have a web interface? Who hosts it, who owns the server, who wrote the code, and please tell me you aren't part of the crowd that believes anyone in the field of security somehow should be expected to know everything about all possible aspects of it? There is simply too much to know, and typically researcher types are going to be even more specialized than the generic "Hi, I R here to sekure ure network!" Security Analyst or whatever.
Step 1. Discover Exploit
Step 2. Submit Exploit to MS for prize
Step 3. MS rejects exploit saying they already were aware of that, thank you, try again.
Step 4. MS patches previously unknown vulnerability using free 0 day information.
Step 5. MS gets great PR for stepping up their security program and fixing tons of stuff.
You MIGHT get some of the big players to go ahead and play along and pay. But given the behaviors of most of the companies involved in the major security issues...good luck getting paid.
I reply here because I think you have the most amusing reply. But thank God I'm not the only one that thought this was moronic at best, and the people who modded that trite up need to be slapped. That is the exact same irrational fear crap that got us into this mess with the "war on terror". Use your damned brain, "oh noes, the robots best be civilian controlled" Yeah great...aside from the points you mentioned here is another really big one. The whole battle with this terrorist problem is that they are not a uniformed military...so civilian control of military weapons puts every civilian in that same boat as "maybe a combatant". There are very specific reasons that only the military is allowed to use military weapons. Read your constitution and other governing documents. DoD civilians aren't even allowed to 'pull the trigger' on things like this.

That is only because in most developed countries its illegal to hire underage kids.
No, they would be called Rap stars.
