  1. Re:better solution. on Phishers Face Jail Time Under New U.S. Bill · · Score: 1

I agree...the more we "police" the internet ourselves, the less the government will need to regulate it. Your program is a great idea, as are the ones that you can imbed in a web page to send millions of bad email addresses through bots that are skimming the addresses out of pages. To many users complain about internet regulation and censorship while at the same time relying on the government to deal with con-artists and etc. It has to be one way or the other: self-policed freedom, or government control...it is our choice!

  3. Minority Report on Game Makers Could Be Liable For Violent Games · · Score: 1

Why don't we just see who enjoys violent films or games, then we can go ahead and arrest them...at the rate our rights are being trampled, this makes perfect sense. No point in waiting until they actually commit a crime...save the potential victims the pain of the crime...Sorry...I used to get angry over this type of thing, but it has become so rampant in our society that sarcasm is all I can seem to manage any more...

If you ever get a chance, read Frank Herbert's story "Frogs and Scientists". It was published in a short story collection named "Eye". Two frogs, using scientific observation methods, discuss human anatomy...and arrive at interesting conclusions...

  5. Support Small, Local Companies on John Gilmore's Search for the Mandatory ID Law · · Score: 2, Interesting

Legal but not acceptable...I have quit shopping at several companies that insist on checking every receipt. I have never stolen from them, and for the company to assume that I have, until they prove that I have not, is just not acceptable.

What I have done to offset this is to deal with small local companies. Sometimes I pay a little more, but there is the satisfaction of supporting the small business, getting to know the owners, keeping a larger part of my hard earned money in the community, and of knowing that I am not supporting companies that continually abuse both thier employees and their customers!

  6. Re:Quotes from the BBC article: on Online Trust Failing Overall · · Score: 1

Several years ago I worked installing IBM RS6000's for manufacturing companies. Each user was built with a default password, and the user changed the password to something they wanted on first login.
Later, during system and software training, I would go over security, and one of the things I would do would be to have a friendly conversation with a user, then later, guess their passwords. Many were children's names, birthdays, or the name of a celebrity on a poster in their cubicle. With a few minutes on a keyboard I could get into at least half the people's accounts!
We would then discuss security and proper passwords. Point is, the users were always surprised at how easy breaking into their account was...then these same people "don't trust" buying on the internet...

Thank you...I once saw a bumper sticker that said "If you don't believe in abortion, don't have one". This seemed to make a lot of sense. As humans we tend to see the negative side of things many times. Someone asked me if we allow fertility clinic embryos to be used for research, then won't we need to regulate this so that researchers do not start paying women to go to the fertility clinics? As with any new idea or procedure there are people ready to jump on it, while others fight to maintain what has always been...luckily, in our societies, we do think about it, talk about it, look at every side of it...this is probably the reason that we humans have not destroyed ourselves...we don't move to fast.

  8. Re:Vent my Credit Card/Check Card Pet Peeve on Visa To Push Swipeless Credit Cards · · Score: 1

I like my bank card...it has my picture on it, in color. I was very suprised at the number of cashiers who actually look at the picture and compare it to me. This works well...my signature is not very good on the card, and after a couple of years in my wallet, it is worn away in places. I have run into some cashiers in places like Wal-Mart that were completely incapable of comparing signatures; I had to call a manager.
My major concern with these cards is not someone stealing money from it; rather when Wal-Mart gets their RFID system in place they will start flashing an LED under a product at me...now they can scan this card in my wallet and know who I am when I walk in the door...they cannot get money without a PIN or something, but they will be able to track me all over the store, offering me things to buy based on previous purchases...that would be an annoyance.
