  6. Well... on Username/Password - Is It Still Secure? · · Score: 1

My opionion only, is that passwords CAN be relatively secure. I would go with https, and make sure you dont leave any cookies (obviously). Also make sure the passwords are encrypted on the server-side ( dont just throw the plain text passwords into a sql database!!! ). For the choosing of passwords, be very strict. I am assuming you are doing on-site work for this company. I would talk to the guy in charge over there, and convince them that they NEED secure, randomly generated passwords, and that the people should not write them down. because thats not a good idea :) Overall, on the client end, dont let them choose theyre own username or password! Try to use a randomly or in-order number for the username (not theyre employee id or matching any other number), and make the password randomly generated. Also, something else to note is that maybe you should think of doing extra layers of security. For example, when they hit this https server, make it prompt them for a u/p that they can choose the password, just as a simple yet annoying step (for any intruder). Then proceed to prompt them for theyre extremely-secure l/p... Also another good idea would to IP-Lock to theyre machine (to avoid outside interferance). (I may not be understanding the situation, but you can derive off these ideas) Because, after all, if someone were to hack this at the persons desk, its just as hard to go and pull the records from a file cabinet -- both require non-digital bravery :)

If you have tried a fresh install of 98 SE, with ie5 installed (and do it correctly!) you will notice that ie is an extremely stable process under the correct setup. Much better even that netscape is under windows. I have a theory... Netscape, although it used to be known for stability over IE, has since tried so hard to catch up with M$, that it sacrificed stability for features, and you end up with an unstable N. Its no fun. Netscape WILL go down. IE is for Windows, Mozilla (which i am decently faithful in) is for Linux. I am faithful that once mozilla gets rolling, netscape wont have a place in windoze or linux....

I think that would be a great move for MS. Everyone is on them to go open-source. Since the ce code is basically like 9x/nt code, the benefits the code would receive under the gnu liscence (or similar) could be implemented into win2000 or theyre next viable release...

NOT AOL, no matter how much of a newbie, AOL is too simple and i am led to believe it actually makes you stupider. Let him learn netscape or IE (and well, netscape for 9x currently ~= buggy shit, so give him ie). win98se w/ ie5 has a crash rate of 0% when you 1) use it properly and 2) set it up properly. otherwise give him NT if you hate 9x. but remember its for him :)
