Heck, even MS Word isn't compatible with MS Word!
Care to back this up with some evidence? I keep hearing this line that Word XP isn't compatible with older versions. At the company I work at (60,000+ people globally) we use Office 97 and we get along fine with it. I've never had a problem opening Word documents sent to me from other companies nor have I had problems opening Word documents from my home machine running Office XP. These aren't just simple text documents. We use the track changes and comments feature a lot as well as Word documents that let you fill them out as forms. Zero problems. Even OpenOffice will open most of these files, only choking partially on the most complex of files.

If you're building a mass-market app you plan to sell you all of the great unwashed out there, then you probably need to make it look very Windows-centric.

Note that it only works with Outlook 2000 and above. There are still many companies, including the one I work for (60,000+ people) who still use Outlook 98 company wide. IF you're in that boat, SpamNet is sadly not a solution.

It looks like Jim doesn't want to be supported. He complains that the lawyers didn't call him to discuss this before firing off the C&D letter, yet he's not willing to call them to discuss the issue after receiving the letter. He just says "fuck you" and says he's going to give up. He says they want to sue him but a suit isn't mentioned anywhere in the scanned letter. It looks like Jim isn't willing to make even the most basic effort to help himself. Why doesn't he call them and see if he can hammer out an agreement to use the logo, name, etc. in a manner that will be acceptable to both parties?
