I was wondering the same thing. A recent story here mentioned that IE dropped below 50% market share. So, most people know they can, and do install another browser. If they didn't install some default browser, it would be a pain to install a different one.
Cops aside, what if the search engine gave suggestions like local psychologists or anger management. Wasn't Facebook going to give ads for suicide hotlines if your posts seem depressed? Even if cops are not made aware of your searches, I wonder if there is some psychological impact of your search engine hinting that they have tracked your searches and know what you're planning.
The difference is that both Diebold and their clients (the banks) have a vested interest in making sure ATMs *DO* record every transaction accurately. ATMs do fail occasionally and there are cases of them being tampered with in various ways. The difference is that it's easy to quantify the risk of ATMs being tampered with as the expected loss of $$ vs the cost of making a better system. It's not clear how or if one can quantify voting machine security or reliability in a similar way.
There is NOTHING wrong with a paper vote other than taking so long.
I tend to agree that paper is safer than electronic voting, but a pure paper and pencil ballot (e.g., checkboxes on identical anonymous sheets of paper), are not completely safe. Someone could stuff the ballot box, for example. Even if they are caught, it may be difficult to distinguish the real and fake ballots. Forcing a new election is often infeasible and probably a win for the attacker.
