  1. After reading TFA... on HP Introduces New Technology to Save Mobile Battery Life · · Score: 2, Interesting

I admit I'm confused about how the computer knows things like which lines of text you're reading. Do you have to keep the cursor there, or something? Or is it...sentient? :P

  2. I wonder. on The Story Behind Cell Phone Radiation Research · · Score: 5, Insightful

This is almost tinfoil hat territory, but this sounds remarkably similar to the way tobacco companies once behaved. I wonder if any cellular companies have undergone their own private tests, and if so, I wonder what they have found.

  3. Pardon me for asking... on Opensource Apple Lossless Decoder Released · · Score: 5, Interesting

...but I just don't see why Apple felt it was necessary to make another lossless format. While Apple in the past has been accused of often suffering from NIH (Not Invented Here) syndrome, it seemed like they were improving in this area: the iMac helped popularize USB, the open-source core of OS X has its roots in BSD, iTunes supports MP3s, their web browser gives source back to Konquerer, etc. Anyone have any theories as to why they didn't just use FLAC? After all, the work was already done for them...

I can tell you're neither a Mac user nor an Apple watcher. The true believers know the i is *always* lower-case. ;)

  5. I don't know... on Vonage's CEO Says VoIP Blocking Is 'Censorship' · · Score: 3, Interesting

if I'd go so far as to call it cenorship, per se, but it certainly is a scummy thing to do. Broadband companies shouldn't cherry-pick what ports they'll use, especially if they want to keep their "common carrier" status. Isn't that the defense they like to use against releasing P2P customer information to the MPAA? Or is that more of a /.-ism than something said by the companies themselves?

  6. Heheh on Star Wars Sith Trailer and the O.C. · · Score: 5, Funny
The article is candid in pointing out that 'as an avid superhero fan, Seth Cohen, the main character of "The O.C." played by Adam Brody, would likely relish the event.'

They neglected to mention that, like Seth, the only people who are still interested in Star Wars are fictional characters.

  7. Of course... on Sun Storms Deplete Ozone, Too · · Score: 2, Insightful

...this means in any minute now we'll get one of those charming "See? We don't need to worry about things in the environment being damaged by man-made processes, because it happens by itself anyway!" posts. Well, before that happens, I'd like to pose a question. Namely, if things have the potential to break, and if nature can break things on its own...how does that justify anyone making it break worse than it would just by itself? Using this logic, it would be okay if a factory artificially generated tornados all the time because, hey, it happens in nature.

My Mom used to subscribe to some pretty kooky Religious Right publications (unfortunately, she quite possibly still does). I remember one of them was heavily pushing a Net-Nanny type program, and the advertisement claimed it could actually analyze the images and selectively block out sites where the images contained naughty bits but didn't have textual cues for other, competing pieces of software to pick up on. Of course, now that such things might actually be possible, they'll just block all the sites that have pictures of balloons. ;)

And, linking to an article specifically extolling the praises of one user, and then slapping it's logo right next to the question on the front page probably doesn't help anything. And yes, I am a Mac user too. Being fair isn't about personal preference.

Unfortunately, Batman tends to work at night, so solar cells won't be of too much help.
  11. Well... on Was the Mac mini Intended to Have an iPod dock? · · Score: 0

Technically, that option was there the whole time, if you felt like doing some extensive surgery. Of course, the problem with that is it's just not very easy to do it on an Apple and not mess up the way the computer looks. But then, real men don't care about that anyway, right? ;)
