SE is also a big Opera customer and my "Web" which is way similar to iPhone on Sony Ericsson P1i is actually Opera. Of course, being old fashion guy, I rather prefer Opera use their own invention "Small screen rendering".

You should get a demo for E90 having latest firmware and Opera installed to understand what I mean. It is just like Desktop web browser even including embedded Flash (Youtube etc.) You will figure it is in fact the micro laptop.

The "True internet" claim is bugging me since the first introduction of iPhone. I am not an Apple hater , I use Apple whenever possible but... iPhone marketing/administration/developer support is way out of hand and seriously hurting Apple image. Perhaps MS keeps their PowerPC Windows maintained just in case? It wouldn't be surprise. If you look at Windows NT history, they had to deal with that horrible Intel RISC chip so they won't accidentally code x86 specific code in any case. MS still keeps saying "i386" on various directory and windows update sites for a reason.

If Apple was on Cell organisation, you would expect something like Toshiba did. They keep on x86/Windows but they add a Cell processor as a co-processor to do insane things. Also keep in mind there is nothing stopping any company to put a Cell chip to PCI card, contribute to ffmpeg/vlc code and ship a multi platform media accelerator for PCs and Macs.

It is a sad fact today that x86 stays, at least for Desktop. I can't imagine IBM working with Apple again to provide them POWER6UL (rumoured ultra light). Apple in fact seriously hurt POWER image. They could just say "IBM and Motorola are concentrated on different markets" but they spoke about performance/watt, heat consumption etc. which are ONLY true for PPC line of that huge architecture. They couldn't say "They don't give a heck to our needs" of course :)

After all of this, it would be really hard to convince developers to re-code for POWER instruction set, Altivec etc. It is a radically different thing. I am speaking about consumer/desktop developers of course, POWER is kinda x86 on enterprise market.

Can you imagine IBM engineers going mad over "lower than expected fps" on a popular game? That is the issue. Intel and AMD has such people.

On iPhone, you click their network in "Airport" menu, there it works.

The locked iPhone created some sort of image that Apple would even bother to say what can be coded for OS X or not. It is not the case. If you see a hardware/software doesn't support OS X, especially after Intel switch, reasons could be:

    1) They don't have enough manpower to code a C++ (IOKit's version) kernel extension.
    2) They need MS backing (usual on companies who puts "supports windows vista!!!" on every kind of crap they make, including Monitors, e.g. Samsung)
    3) They don't figure the market they miss.
(old reason 4): You code something for a CPU that is made by Motorola or IBM who doesn't give a shit. After Intel, it changed.

Theoretically you can code some media suite which is ages ahead of iTunes and can compete with Apple, on OS X for FREE using XCode provided by Apple.
