Perhaps the real issue is, MS employees can't or won't tell their opinions on Slashdot or any site. They are way more free on Mac sites regarding products for Mac. I almost feel sorry for them when they put a blog entry about MS Office on Mac, it is like 95% "How I hate MS" type of offtopic crap. Good thing, they even reply to such posts. You can find them posting comments to Macworld with their real name and job title. For Windows part, I didn't see a single MS employee on anywhere. You could ask "Well, who would dare to post to Slashdot?", I could give a good example who dares... Helix (Real Networks) GM, posts with his own name and even submits stories sometimes. Don't you think that guy doesn't know the possible feedback he and their company would get? They should be social. I even suspect there is some kind of company policy against it.
I keep reading even on the most MS friendly blogs/IT sites one thing: "Do what Apple dared to do, switch to Unix!"
Wonder if such a radical thing would happen. They had a Unix license, they are automatically experienced in Unix thanks to shipping really big selling stuff to OS X , even Leopard the most picky OS of all times...
Don't let how dated Xenix is fool you, see what the most modern Unix Desktop says on boot (for Mach) kernel[0]: Copyright (c) 1982, 1986, 1989, 1991, 1993 The Regents of the University of California. All rights reserved.
The most organised, single distro, commercial backed OS is OS X right? They also happen to code for OS X producing Office stuff which are said to be better working than Windows ones in some aspects.
I don't give a shit to Mono, their promises, their change of aspect, their non existent (!) stance to open source until I don't get the line below ls:/Library/Frameworks/dotnet 3.0: No such file or directory
It is a easy benchmark for you, as Linux user. You hear "MS treats open source/other operating systems better" kind of thing once more? Go to Microsoft.com, see if their billion dollar framework has been shipped for OS X. Remember they _need_ that running to be able to ship Office "Live" service which they are planning. They can safely lose money and customers just to treat as shit to other OS customers.
If I was a Linux user, I would lobby against a MS written ext3 driver, at least a write capable one. They are still insisting to be kind of company which would do some bad stuff to your linux partition and say "oops, windows update will fix it".
If they were actually changing things, changing their mafioso style, I would be the first one support them. I am the guy dared to say on Slashdot "lets support Vista if it will fix the security issue"
The issue happens when you want to call a non technical user as P2P. Those people really got themselves locked into Skype (not in malicious way) and while Gizmo provides the complete standard based solution even using XMPP, you find hard time to convince those non technies to switch.
Of course if I was VOIP-->PSTN only, it would be Gizmo. It is actually sad, in 2008, another "launch 2 apps which does the same thing" situation adds to the already schizophrenic IM situation.
What is the point of designing such luxury/magnetic only additions but not adding a basic thing like "SSD" to your already own device flags/registry so those guys can trigger the disable automatically with their device profile?
They are Microsoft... I mean think you are lead developer of HD interface of Windows and you call Sandisk, how long it would take for the most important tech guy to answer? 5 secs?
If there is half a reason I don't say "Leopard is crap" and go back to OS X Tiger is, the amount of clever tricks Apple does to cope with their own HFS+
On Tiger installing a huge thing like Developer tools+X11 would mean 20% HFS+ B-Tree fragmentation. On Leopard, it only costs 5%. (which is never issue for average user)
I also see my USB External junk doing 17 MB/sec instead of 12 MB of Tiger.
The OS has issues but there are things like that which makes you hesitant to switch back.
If Vista really performs bad on filesystem operations compared to XP, after all those years of coding with deepest level of relations with HD/controller manufacturers which Apple never had, I wonder who is really running Microsoft... How long will shareholders stand to that anarchy. Nothing else.
They steal everything from Apple and somehow, Apple is silent...
Why don't actually steal the genius idea of on the fly optimising from Apple that only optimises things a)actually used (by user), b)way fragmented and the system is really idle to do luxury things like that?
It is not needed on SSD but there is no such thing like "lets defrag cvs command which that old lady would never use" too. So Apple doesn't have that problem with SSD.
Opera 8.65 which is 2 years old code does work in my device (Nokia E65) which has 13MB free RAM (while Fring running). On Symbian device class of mine, you don't get any kind of swapping excuse, you get the boot from OS if you dare to use more RAM than it requires to do the job.
N800 has 128MB RAM, I don't think it is a problem _unless_ people culturally doesn't understand the idea of coding in a tight way, professionally and putting only, strictly required stuff get in the way.
I am way biased because I do have a full browsing experience optimised to my 240x320 screen thanks to Opera Mobile version. I don't have an iPhone, I don't plan to buy it and I wouldn't buy some iPhone-like device (even tablet) if it doesn't get the basic fact that it hasn't got 1024*768 screen. It should adopt it, at least give a choice and should make it seamlessly like Opera Mobile does.
Opera has disciplined themselves coding for very tight memory and lately, giving a reason for people to buy over free for years. That is why N800 should always have Opera, at least as an option.
All my contacts use Skype for P2P voice. Some even have actual Skype devices which works at their home wireless.
The issue is exactly that. Skype became de-facto standard. I love the Gizmo and Nokia does everything to push it on Symbian but when I launch/install it, "no online contacts". They don't exist! That is why:)
SIP providers before Skype/Gizmo are to blame. I found myself using actual printed "configuration settings" and filling some 20-30 fields when I first dared to experiment with SIP. I can't imagine anyone who doesn't even know what "IP" is (they don't have to!) filling that.
So, just like "Youtube invented online video" (!), Skype is inventor of online telephony in people's eyes. Staring at my contact list on Skype, there is not a single way to make them switch.
I misunderstood the post and was just about to cancel all my plans to buy Nokia tablet. I understood it like "Opera won't run on N800"
Webkit? I already have it on my S60 V3 phone and it has costed me $20 Opera 8.65 license. That thing is not designed to run in embedded devices, I am a heavy web user, I can't stand to the idea of "pan/zoom/pan/zoom". It belongs to iPhone.
Nokia's worst ever mistake (after using.sis(x) for themes) is the adoption of Webkit instead of keeping Opera license. N800 was number one gadget at Amazon for sometime, the users aren't really RMS or some Open Source fanatic. They want a device which is cheap, actually works and won't have to run a full feature security solution. N800 is successful because it is a device, easily used... Not some poster child of open source or anything.
Choice between Gecko/Webkit and Opera? Opera wins. It was designed for mobile/embedded. It is like suicide on slashdot to say it but I wouldn't buy a N800 which only provides choice between Webkit or Gecko. I gave my note to Gecko way long ago, when they said "Windows Mobile only", "256 M RAM".
To compete with already running and happily used devices, they need to add something... Insane amount of DPI or e-ink technology comes to mind which e-ink already provides the DPI too. I am very sad that Amazon released that unlookable ugly crap which only works in USA/Canada which is like a joke for the idea of "digital download". They love to share half of their money with DHL/UPS it seems.
"and how many plumbers have MMS phones? Why is THAT expectation more rational than email?"
that is my point. I just know he had a colour screen phone and with my provider, everyone gets MMS configuration automatically, I know he will be able to receive it. I got his number, there is a thing called "MMS standard", I send him a basic graphic that _I_ pay to send without causing inconvenience.
It is really absurd to defend a standard like MMS. It is _minimum_ standard, it is convenient, designed by Telcos and GSM manufacturers... I feel like defending a fax for sending quick notes purposes which Apple tried to remove (along with modem) from Macbook, every sane person and businessman told them a basic fact that not every Hotel got their cool T3 class LAN networks and people do need fax sometimes, they put it back in later model.
Believe or not, those Nokia, Samsung, Sony phones takes way better pictures than Apple iPhone 2 MP but for some reason (!) they keep MMS functionality.
Symbian S60 V3 aka "Series 60". There are like thousands of evil guys trying to exploit them and there is serious money in it. Nobody could come with a single example of malware so far. Thanks to http://www.symbiansigned.com/ scheme.
By forcing people to hack their devices, making them get used to binary hacks, educating them to ignore security concerns... They are acting like Nokia back in 2001! This time, a Cabir.iphone or any trojan.iphone will be a disaster. Things have really changed...
What about getting service from a non idiotic company who knows how web works? That is another solution:)
Just using e-mail would be great if everyone had e-mail account, they have configured their phone and they get service from a company doesn't rob them for every single KB of data coming to device.
Yesterday I sent MMS to a plumber I know to give a clue about the "disaster" so he could get right tools. Now, that guy will have a perfectly setup IMAP mail account, I will know that mail, I will leak my mail to him (to get fw: junk)... Anyway, you get the idea.
Funny thing is, the web based mms stupid idea was just about to disappear... It was designed for times that everyone didn't have MMS enabled phones... Now iPhone shipped without MMS!
There are very serious sounding concerns about the iPhone privacy and the huge private data feed the GSM/3G provider gets. The device is designed in such a way that.. If it wasn't Apple, I would call it spyphone.
I trust to Apple, I am kind of person who sends his system profile to them when I add a new device... What concerns me is the network provider... That is a very serious concern especially in countries which "they already follow you".
PS: To.ogg people: get a openstep/cocoa experienced objective C developer, let him/her code oggplay.app which will generate zero warnings and entirely coded abiding Apple guidelines, submit it to app store , if Apple doesn't allow... You can speak.
Forget if anyone dares to hate Apple, our situation (Apple computer users) are even worse.
I hated the iPhone right after figuring there is no way to get useful software without hacking it and I own 3 Macs at home, my hosting is on XServe based company (significantly more expensive) and I plan an additional Mac Mini Intel to use like Apple TV without locking in.
While I seriously suspect they have some sort of idiotic "MSCE" gang there and hoping they fix it soon, Nokia S60 series based handsets/smartphones serves my needs way better. I am a type of person who installs 30 themes, adds/removes 10 hacks in a week. Thing is, even most complex hack like tools like Psiloc stuff doesn't require hacking. They, as commercial company gets source reviewed by Symbian organisation granting no harm done to consumer/device, they get some very high level certificate and sell it to users. Imagine getting a universal/smart infrared remote from Apple App store or a (GSM/GPS) location based profile changer.
Apple didn't have to spend millions of dollars or stand against a huge PR trouble like Nokia did. Nokia finally found "middle of both worlds" solution after Cabir like disasters. If your app doesn't do anything possibly harming users privacy, financial status or handsets stability, you don't need a signature. If you require a signature (root level running app), you get it reviewed freely. If you ask for money, you get it reviewed commercially. There is no "app store" around, a central fascist like organisation which will permit what people will do with their devices or not. I would care less unless I figured Apple is just acting like a noob on scene. No, they are really malicious. Not putting J2ME for what reason exactly? Why no multitasking while $70 phones started to do it even with J2ME apps? Instead of giving a single reason, they are also trying to hurt millions of Java developers out there along with near billion J2ME users/customers.
They will never happen so as a Apple Mac only user, I ignore iPhone and suggest Symbian using people not to buy it. For iPod or simple J2ME based phone lovers, it could be great tool. I would even buy as a gift to some people. It doesn't change my view, I will never buy anything which disallows me from doing things I did back in 2002 with my Nokia 7650.
I have another question to OSS/FOSS lovers. Nokia paid 450 million Euros just to make Symbian open source, they had to deal with their biggest rivals from entirely different cultures and corporate histories. Now the FSF and OSS fans are suggesting ordinary people to buy an alpha quality Linux based handset instead of suggesting to pick one of several vendors in Symbian organisation right?
There is one, single thing that can truly replace Wmedia along with its Framework. It is Quicktime from Apple. If they keep insisting on that God damn taskbar icon, mail asking page, bundling iTunes and forcing people to dig Apple FTP site on some versions just to get Quicktime alone, the replacement can't work.
Things would be very different if Quicktime windows didn't ask for money to do full screen in earlier versions, a way different than today. That basic difference would change shape of things.
I bet it is stolen code, there was a mp3 to wma transcoder (free) from MS which they heavily advertised hoping a mp3less future. There was no ASF involved though.
Funny is they copy everything Apple but not good ones. There is a reason for Quicktime looking to a single, central server at Apple to download additional codecs.
Can anyone tell the reason why a person can buy DVD from a foreign country but not allowed to stream it?
I wonder instead of MPAA/RIAA conspiracy, there is a UPS/DHL conspiracy around? You know, they sell DVD for $20 but the shipping costs $30?
In 2008's Internet, with advance of trusted technologies like Bittorrent (check the.com), it feels like... "no coloured people" or something. Apologies to say it. Needless to remind that even P2P based paid services like Vuze, Bittorrent discriminates too. They will offer free content but NOT paid content. Almost like a comedy.
As Apple Mac owners and OS X (upgrade) buyers , we also deserve our share from Psytar. They are making money from the OS we paid for in both hardware and software.
I spoke with very old timer Mac users, especially from DTP sector. They say Clones were _horrible_ except couple of brands specific models.
Can you say that unbranded, white box junk gives same experience to user as a real Apple Macintosh does? That is the real issue. It is against the very basic philosophy of Apple. Hardware and Software should integrate perfectly. That is also why they don't even bother thinking licensing Mobile OS X to other companies and become World dominant mobile OS provider.
If it is against your philosophy, there is a very simple solution. You ignore Apple and their products. E.g. as a Apple user, I hated the iPhone since beginning, the entire concept of it, I keep my Symbian based smart phones and ignore iPhone.
Someone should have sued them before for tricking people that they buy a "cheap" Apple experience and abusing the word "open".
I am still so sure that Pystar Open (!) Apple or whatever would perform better if it had XP Sp3 or even Vista SP1 installed. Also I am saying it as a Mac only user.
People don't get the philosophy of Apple from the very beginning. Apple says "I will mix hardware and software in such an ideal way that your computing experience won't be different from just turning on TV". Microsoft says "You mix and match hardware or buy a labelled mix and match of hardware, we will provide the software which will try its best to support your PC".
It is a huge difference. It is completely different approaches to personal computing.

If it has some kind of needless services and huge idle overhead like XP does, it does indeed have some responsibility for global warming.
The size of Windows installed PCs are huge... Really huge... A 10-20% overhead on a modern CPU is way more different than 1% in terms of energy usage.
