The cost is a very relative thing. I mean, food and shelter can vary a great deal in expense depending on where you live in the world. Creators have historically lived in less expensive parts of the country- it's possible they just can't afford to create in the more expensive parts of the world.
However, we do not owe them a living for life for creating one thing. At most we owe them a reasonable wage compared to the rest of society. Clearly that's not the case these days so they have managed to warp the rules to their favor. So they are getting pushback from everyone else.
However, the article's point is that it's not about us pushing back- it's about them pushing us even harder.
I feel with such a HUGE glut of entertainers, that this issue is going to correct itself. For example, I havn't tuned into ABC, CBS, or NBC pretty much since about 1997 or so. They got crowded out by everquest, ultimate, Monk, Dead Like Me, etc. The fact is that entertainer's audiences are shrinking fairly rapidly. Other than the rare "Harry Potter", we have increasingly tiny groups of fans around entertainers compared to the wierd period of the 1940's to the 1980's.

Jar Jar was the most fully rounded character (astonishing given the screen time given to other characters who did nothing with it) in the first prequel and the only one that caused dramatic tension. So many people don't see that. They know they are bored by the others, but since they were only irritated at Jar Jar they think of him as a bad character. But at least he made them *FEEL* something.

There are some good basic values in christianity and if you just took the 10 commandments and the "love your neighbor"/"golden rule" portions of it, you have a fairly good basis for a society. I will say this tho- stay away from romantic entanglements with catholic girls. It doesn't matter if they are in love with you, have every kind of freaky sex with you, when it comes time to marry- you better be ready to convert and raise the children or you are likely to find your ass on the curb. Never happened to me but happened to three friends of mine over the years (2 didn't convert and that was it- like a light switch and they were pretty devastated- 1 "converted" and agreed for the kids to be raised in the church and he's married/has kids with the lady).

I spent a good 15 years fighting religious people trying to convert me and finally just gave up on it. They don't fight fair and there is zero chance at this point that I'm going to convert so I really don't feel a lot of need to argue with them any more. Likewise I don't hide my lack of belief.
I have learned that you will believe as you want to believe until you are ready to change to believing something else. And any way that I argue with you actually increases your resolve. I used to scratch build.
For the last two years, the parts to build the machine cost more than buying a prebuilt machine with an OS installed.
OEM vendors have to be paying next to nothing per copy for their OS.
The price of the OS seems to depend on the hardware. High end hardware can be bought and scratch-built cheaper than medium to low end hardware.

I support the right of anyone to speak, sing, write and paint in the fashion they desire-- and so clearly that includes the ability to do that in any language or format of their choice. Some might be in french or chinese-- or a dead language - or an encrypted language.
DRM means at some point in the future legally purchased products may become unusable.
Perfect example is DIVX dvd's. They TOLD you that you would be able to view them forever once authorized.
The problem: After a very short time, they brought down the authorization servers and all DIVX disks became useless plastic.

If the government required these fools to put up authorization servers for life (with hefty bonds up front) or have an exit code (so when they closed down they could unlock the content) then it might be okay at the right price level.
It's my same issue with music. If it is a license to play the music, then they should RECORD the license and if my physical copy is broken I should be able to replace it for production cost (since I already have a license to the song).
