All UIN's under 100000 are employees/developers (and probably some friends) of mirabilis/AOL. For end users, it starts at 100000 on up. Although it still could be a hoax, well, someone open an account and say they are eleven or something and see what happens. It is on ICQ's web page, so who knows... Just wait and see.
I HATE that MDI crap... I just wish they would let you open JUST the text editor, or JUST the spreadsheet. I am not using windows for a reason... Get rid of the stupid start button and task bar. That's what my window manager is for.
That's a good point, but in the article, it never said anything about killing anyone in his webpage. The kid just said stuff about the students and teachers. By calling someone a "slut" doesn't really make them a killer. You do make an interesting point though. But my point was, they shouldn't have treated him like a killer. I do agree with them taking down the website, and I don't blame the parents for being worried. I just think it should have been handled in a better way. Another thing you said that I agree with is that they are always looking for "that bad kid." Sometimes I think they are looking too hard for that one kid. School's think that if you have a coat on, you are automagically carrying a gun. if they see something in your pocket - it's gotta be a knife. You wear clothes different from other people, you better keep an eye on them - they're different. You cant be different anymore. If you do, you're a criminal. In that article, they mentioned that the kid wore Rage against the Machine T-shirts. Who cares? It's just a shirt. Because I listen to Rage Against the Machine, doesn't make me dangerous, but if I wear a Rage Against the Machine T-shirt, then watch out!!! What about the colored hair? The kid goes to school with pink hair and they send them home. Other kids wear green hair and its OK. I dont know how true it is, but I'm willing to make bets that the kids with green hair weren't wearing a Rage Against the Machine T-shirt. It's just dumb.
This really bugs me... Anything that ever happens at a highschool is ALWAYS linked to colombine. Sure, it was sad, and should have never happened, but HELLO!!!!!! Wake up people! This kid didn't do ANYTHING related to the shooting. All he did write about people he didn't like for one reason or another. Sure, it should have been taken down, but did he really need to be sitting in juvinile detention for SEVEN DAYS?!?!? No. Should they have taken the computer to "analyze" it? No. They're treating the kid as if he was a murderer or something. It's rediculous! His father even said in the article, he had guns in the house, and if he wanted to, he could get to them. He was just letting off some steam, and look what they did. It's like his own computer was a bomb or something. Gimmie a break.
In a few articles I have read about the Metallica/Napster lawsuit, there were quotes saying something like, "Some artists are in it for the music, others are in it for the money. This lawsuit shows where Metallica stands." What is your response to that comment? Is it to save the music, or is it all about money?
Not me, at least not until they give us a decent video driver for X as they promised in the beginning...
But the idea seems great for everyone else, It would be great to be able to give game companies an API that will allow them to easily create cross-platform games/apps with out too much trouble to port.
But at the same time, It would be nice to get more companies in on this, because the more video/audio/game developers that get in on this, the more games/apps we get for more platforms.
We should be able to have a choice of operating system without having to keep a windows partition on there just so we can use 3D StudioMAX just because there isnt a Linux, Be, Mac, SomethingOS port.
I agree. There are so many things that you could do with these devices. But I DO see why they made the devices unhackable - They are eating the cost of $99 in hopes that they earn it back with the $21/mo Internet charge. If people are buying the box without the internet charge, then they are losing money. And by the looks of it, they are probably losing ALOT of money.
I think they should sell Iopeners with a drive bay, for $200. I have been looking for one of these toys for a while on Ebay and other auctions, and they all go for about $200. If they were to sell them for $200, I am pretty sure that they will sell quite a few of them (I know I would).
There are so many possibilities with these Iopeners, It would be a waste to only let these thins be used for their service. Besides, look at all the popularity they have recived because of this whole linux issue. I had never heard of these until I found the hack.
Ahh, but I don't recall ever seeing an encyclopedia for linux on DVD. And what's the point in getting MSDN on DVD if I dont use windows? I'm not making windows apps for linux you know. I think thats the whole problem here. Since we use an alternative operating system, we can't use the software we want unless we do it ourselves, which is OK, unless people (mpaa) get in the way of us doing so. And until that's taken care of, we're not really gonna get anywhere. Alot of software companies are starting to port their products to linux, which I think is great, but I also like the idea of being able to have some control over what the software does, or add a feature to a product that I see would help me get things done, or whatever I'm doing. That's why opensource is so important. If the end user is helping to develop the software, they can implement what they would use, not what the company thinks is "cool" (like the M$ Office paperclip, for example). It's better for the product if its opensource. Alot of people could care less about something being opensource. Most of the sourcecode for apps are never even looked at. Alot of people just download it and compile it- never even touch the code. But if a user finds a problem, they have the power to fix it, instead of waiting 3 months for a servicepack that's 50MB big. Now that I'm off topic from the reason I even replied to this...
Just to summarize my endless babbling: 1) Linux needs opensource 2) Users need opensource 3) Thats about it. :)
Yes, pure genius! let's d00 it! I agree with chad all the way. Cause who can possibly lose with 100,000+ defendants? Oh, I forget, you need to be a huge company with billions of dollars to actually get anywhere in court. He who has the money, gets his way... We have obviously seen this to be true right here... Now what am I gonna do, now that I can't watch DVDs on my puter? I spent all this money for what? nothing... MORE DEFENDANTS!!!! "chad" for president!!!
The story doesnt like to it at all in the story... Does anyone know where I can get this nifty program? Seems pretty cool.
