This reminds me a lot of the SST. Nice plane, fast plane but still a gigantic white elephant. To fuel up, back up to the nearest oil well and suck it dry (They don't need no stinkin' tanker). I doubt they will break even. Nothing learned from the Spruce Goose or even the SST. Congratulations, they beat the 747 record set nearly 40 years ago. I hope it proves to have as safe a record as the 747 does. Europe wants 5 million in coverage to fly a little Cessna 182, I can't imagine how much coverage they would require for this monster.
Sorry slashdotters, I see a huge amount of resources, fuel and money going up in smoke. Hard to not say anything. Viva la France and good luck.
What does it say in the FIRST sentence? The Inter-American Telecommunication Commission meets three times a year in various cities across the Americas to discuss such dry but important issues as telecommunications standards and spectrum regulations.
here is their site -
http://www.citel.oas.org/citel_i.asp They have been meeting for years. So they did have plenty of chances, at least since 2003. So by what you wrote, you agree with me? Somehow I doubt it. It is never that easy.
Still think my head is up my ass? To the contrary, do you really expect to convince me with nothing? You seem to be saying these are bad guys up to no good... they just are. See, they kicked some guys off a commission because they donated $250 to the democrats and are Kerry supporters.
Uh huh. Real convincing.... NOT! I have donated more than that to Mount Vernon (George Washington's house in Virginia now run by a private women's organization, they put out nice calendars too BTW). Somehow I doubt my donations would include or exclude me from anything official. I have very good reason to think that by the way. If those companies feel they have been wronged, you can bet they will be in contact with their congressman. Sounds like no big deal but they do make a difference.
Looking for your name I found a number of citations from you. What do you mean by your original suggestion? It won't kill them to send the engineers? Let them meet without them this one time. It won't kill anyone to leave them behind and we may get something done, finally.
I see nothing wrong with it but for totally different reasons. It is clear that in the past (this meeting is annually), they did include them. It seems clear from what the WH said is that these guys are not very friendly to what the Government wants to do and said so. The spin comes from others and somehow match Kerry, donations to this decision. This is too easy and tempting to do. If that was their motivation then why didn't they do that years ago? Sounds like they gave them a lot of chances to cooperate and they consistently blew it.
I'm very successful in my profession. One of the reasons for that is because I don't think like most others do. I'm willing to consider other ways of doing something. I see that happening here. They can't get it done the old way so they are going to try something else. You seem to think that they should keep on doing the same old thing and nobody goes anyplace. The smoke and mirrors part is saying it is because of donations, they are Kerry supporters, and so on. That may be true and often is and that is why there is no movement in the first place. Kerry lost the election, that is in the past now. I think it would take more than the fact they were Kerry supporters or Dem donators to stop them. The country desperately needs to move forward. We have been held back way to long over stupid stuff. Others are catching up and will leave us behind. Maybe you are afraid of moving forward?
The good news is that somehow we all manage to live through it and life goes on.
This is new and different. Still not a big deal, but different, and obviously wrong.
Hilary's health care is relevent I think, it illustrated as a famous example of how an administration shut out the other side and it is indisputeable (that was 12-13 years ago, do you remember back then?). Even today it is joked about by the pundits. I agree that it is very wrong at the beginning of an administration, perhaps not when a history exists (this guy likes to punch me in the nose, lets let him do it again, only an idiot continues to invite a fight).
I'm not sure why you think I'm trying to 'spin' this. I was very neutral in what I said, I indicted both sides. My other example about the state department is another example. So I had an example inside the Government and one involving entities outside of the government from the last administration. Perhaps I should include examples from the elder Bush, Regan, Carter as well? I even went back to Lincoln's time, 140+ years ago to show this is all business as usual. I would include URL's but news papers from back then don't seem to be online. Take for example the concern about amunition in the Civil war (which ones to stock for US rifles), then there was the railroad issue (guage, steel to use, other standards), fire equipment (hoses were unique to a city), and so on.
One big problem now as it was then is interests. That is always their concern. If you want to get something done, do you allow people you know full well have every interest in stopping you, into the decision making process? I think Time's article is biased and lacking - spin if you want to call it that. Why don't they tell us about those companies and people? Were they buttheads in the past or go with the flow? They may be the reason you don't have a nice HDTV set sitting in your living room today. In the case of Ibiquity (from the Time article), I understood that they are pushing their solution over the established solutions from Japan and Europe. Another case where there will be the US and the rest of the world, just like with NTSC and PAL. That is idiotic. I could be wrong about that so don't quote me. I do know that Cell signals are highly competitive and that was an issue in Iraq. Use the system in the US or the European system? Obviously we wanted our system. There is a big war looming for magnetic wavelength, a quest to turn every TV off at the end of the year (unless they are upgraded to HD signals or use cable) and use the bandwidth for something else. That is no small matter, it is a big deal and worth billions. If those companies are stopping them, that would be a good reason to stop them. It looks like they may also happen to be Kerry supporters and that is what Time picked up on instead of the real issue (Do you remember that Time made Hitler the man of the year?). Microsoft for example gives to both sides so they don't loose either way.
I think you are way off into the woods and eager to believe conspiracy schemes. There was a whole other group that liked to believe the same thing about Clinton. Vince Foster was murdered for example. Some people believed that Clinton woke up every day trying to figure out how to screw the US. That was a darn lie, it was every other day...just kidding.
Seems to be much ado about nothing, again.
If you think I'm the one out on the woods and you see something I don't, speak up. Don't be shy. You may say something that makes it clear to the rest of us. Maybe one day you will be a (good, noble, trustworthy) politician. No, I'm not trying to put you down by that remark. We need good people to be leaders, regardless of which side they are on. You too can look forward to endless hours of hard thankless work with lots of criticism no matter how you decide. In fact the right decision is often the least popular history shows us. You can be one, there are lots of spots opening up as the baby boomers retire/die. But don't answer yet, you also can get (vicious) criticism from your neighbors and even relatives and now slashdot and other online blogs/journals!
I just started browsing through this discussion at -1, to see if insightful conservatives with valid viewpoints were being squashed by slashdot groupthink.
They aren't.
I think you are being presumptuous. They block your IP address or block you if you are registered and get moded down too much (not hard to get moded down). Some even joke about being moded down in their signatures. In political tests I score right smack in the middle but I know I'm careful about what I post here.
Before you criticize Bush's administration too hard, you may want to look at the last administration (or previous ones, it doesn't matter). Take health care reform for example. Bill had his wife - the first "Lady" run it, someone that wasn't even a government official, perhaps not even a government employee (Do they pay first ladies?). Someone that disagreed with her need not come into the city, nevermind be on her comission. The comission later collapsed under its own weight and obvious corruption. That was probably one of the biggest black eye's Bill got in his first term. There is also the case where Bill (or Hilary depending on who you believe) cleaned out the travel office. People that had been working there in that office since Kennedy was in office and even charged one of the men with felonies. He was later cleared of all charges. That scandel was known as travelgate. Lots of other examples but I hope you see where this is going. Same under Reagan, Carter, Johnson, even Truman and especially true under Roosevelt (aka King Roosevelt, talk about an iron grip!). This continues on back through history if you read old papers. Abe Lincoln was criticized I think worse than Bush is. They even went after his wife Mary. A Republican president that is universally recognized as one of the best we ever had.
That is, nothing new or different in what they are doing. No apology, this is business as usual in Washington. What is amazing is that America still gets stuff done and there is progress in spite of all of this through the years.
What I can point out is that Bush did keep on Mr. Norman Mineta who served under Bill Clinton as Commerce Secretary, he is now Bush's Transportation Secretary. He has allowed a number of Democrats/liberals/"progressives" (sometimes progressives are called socialists or communists) to serve that I though were not in his best interest. This is especially true in the State Department. When Clinton came to town he cleaned that place out and put his people in, Bush should have done the same thing.
Try collecting stamps or coins.. That's what makes the nature of a collectible. One (very small) batch of nickles gets printed with the head upside down and make it out of the mint... The coins before and after are worth precisely $.05. The small batch of 'different' ones are worth thousands.
Try? I have an extensive collection of coins and bills. They go clear back to Roman coins. I have some funky $1 bills too. Silver certificates, railroad money, silver coins and so on. So much that I have it secured in a vault. I know the value of this stuff. That is why I'm telling you that Magazine isn't worth $5,000. Intel threw that amount out there to motivate people fast. That it did. Those markets vary greatly. I have seen others make a handsome sum on something that I own. I sure couldn't get the same amount. Do you honesly think that if you had a copy of that 1965 magazine you could get $10,000? $5,000? $1,000? If you do, let me know who bought it. I have some selling to do.
An affidavit from Intel saying that they had offered $10,000 for a good-condition copy, a URL of some of the press about it.
That is nice. If I were a defense attorney I would ask for a fair market value of such a copy. One such offer from Intel does not a market make. Comics aren't like technical publications. I know, I have sold all of my old comic books and baseball cards. I think that issue has some value right now, sort of like Tucker automobiles spiked after the movie Tucker came out. I think it is a big streatch to get up to $5,000. There is an issue on Ebay right now for $455.00. I never had this issue but I had issues later and threw them all out (recycle) about a decade later. I don't think they are any good after a decade. I have a feeling this same issue with Moore will be worth less than $100 6 months from now, if that.
I still have my Wacky Package stickers, interested?
Would you want to litigate that one? Yes your honor, this man stole a 1965 magazine from the library. The judge would probably stop you there and throw you out of court. The issue the month before and after are probably worth nothing, even on a good day.
Even if the judge heard the case, you would have to prove that copy is worth more than $5,000. Good luck doing that. It would be a quick way to end your career. If the suspect is a minority, the ACLU might jump in and demonize you as well. Want to be a poster-boy for prosecuting someone over a 40 year old magazine? I bet there would even be jokes at your expense on Leno and Letterman, then the obligatory jokes about tough (stereotypical spinster) librarians. When they say "shhhhh" they MEAN "shhhh!" Better do it!
That was very unfortunate. Not much they could do when the plans for Meigs destruction were a closely held secret. The AOPA did have a writeup on it and the city of Chicago faces legal action and tripple damages for violating federal law and unlawfully using money to destroy that airport from funds meant for O'Hare and Midway airports. They should put the mayor in jail and anyone else involved in that. Then rebuild Meigs field again, put the Mayor in a portable cage by the runway when they reopen it (bonus - allow us to egg him for $1, I bet they would make a lot of money on that). Not much you can do when those in charge get it in their mind they can and will do something, consequences be damned. I think 5 years in jail for the Mayor would do elected officials a lot of good. Show them that they are NOT above the law. Chicago seems to have a history of corruption people from that area tell me.
Where was the ACLU, and other what the right calls "liberal" organizations? Even a poor tenent that hasn't paid their rent gets more notice than that. They notified the FAA the day they were destroying the airport. I understand people that had aircraft there didn't get any notice.
As for the effectiveness of the AOPA, they have kept open a lot of airports near Washington DC (and around the country) that would otherwise have been closed. This is especially true of College Park airport, the oldest continuously running airport in the world College Park Airport. I fly out of Freeway airport (W00), no problem as long as I don't violate the restricted zone to the West. If you do, I understand "bad things happen."
They don't need no stink'n diesel for their power! In their off hours they can power peddle powered generators! They can also have smaller models under the desk. Those extra pounds their developers have will melt right off! They could also sell slim down plans to all of the fat sl^h^h^h^h^h^hoverweight people in Los Angeles.
The answer is yes. In the District of Columbia (aka Washington), the local government has "red light cameras". They write their own cops tickets for runing red lights and some of those same red light cameras will capture you speeding as well.
Be sure to fight this. They will want to bring it to the USA and Europe in the name of safety - what they told us in Washington. Big brother on the horizon! One day you may wish that your mother in law in the backseat were there instead of the idiot technology you will have. "Your going to fast" (repeat 10 times/mile). "Look out for that truck!" (Repeat 2 times/mile). "Your going to get a ticket!" (Repeat 2 times/10 miles). "You should have taken that last exit, it is shorter" (eh? 1 to 2 times a trip). Don't have a mother in law yet? Just wait!
I wonder how the warning sounds? Like R. Lee Ermey (Mail call, Apacolypse now, etc, USMC personality) - "Hey maggot! Slow down! You are over the speed limit! Stop and give me 20!" Then if you keep it up "Alright maggot! I just wrote you a $50 ticket! Too bad you don't have that much in your banking account, disabling car.... (car stops running)."
I have a feeling you are either running old Unix/Linux servers or more likely windows servers. With old Unix/Linux servers, upgrade to the latest releases. With windows systems, upgrade to Linux if you can. With both systems turn off all the services you don't need. Not using mysql/oracle/MS Sql? Turn it off! Windows runs a lot of crap you don't need. You can even make scripts to do this so you could bring a CD to each machine and in a minute it is secure again (ok, in the case of Windows it can't be made secure. It is a fundamental design problem in the kernel).
Otherwise follow the advice of one of the first posts - quit. You are being paid good money to do a job, don't get upset because they want you to do your job. This doesn't mean fix everything today, it means fix the machines as you can. Next go out and get the open source scanner and run your own scan. Even if you have to take a machine that is currently in a closet to do it with, do it. Load Linux and the scanner and go to it. I often use old beat up machines for Linux serves and audit machines.
Next you should have scripts to do monitoring. Check e-mail in and out of your site, not the contents of the mail, what is going on with the mail. One machine suddenly sending out 1000 X as much mail? It is probably a spam machine now. Things like that. I catch a lot of windows machines that way.
Remember to use computers to your advantage. They do work very fast and very efficiently. Keep track of how to fix one machine then automate it. That can save you a LOT of time!
Just because something has been done for a long time, in one fashion or another, does not mean that it is right. I agree that there were some large abuses of government power in the 1960's. One needs only look as far as McCarthyism to see that.
The protester enforcement has always been done and it is needed to keep things civil. If anything Bush has acted very well and hasn't flown off the handle. Your later example of the Japanese is a good example of how abuses happened in the past - even by a Democratic President that Dem's still think is a great guy or even a hero. But that is another discussion. I'm surprised you used McCarthyism as an example though. When the iron curtain fell a number of things were exposed. The most interesting of which was that McCarthy was doing what Roosevelt and Truman did quietly and that he (McCarthy) was right. The Communists were over here and were trying to destroy the government. This was confirmed along with the names of their agents that matched up nicely with who he was questioning. So to criticize him and not criticize Roosevelt and Truman is a travesty. Maybe he should have done it in a back room like Roosevelt and Truman did.
No argument there. Pray, tell though, what rights are being violated by protesters being present outside an event? Yes, the people talking inside have a right to free speech as well, that is not being violated.....
Lets look at your example. One of the most vocal and many consider a violent protester of the Republican's is Michael Moore. This guy is on the floor of the Republican convention - USATODAY
. Moore laughs all the way to his Manhattan bank from his rich Manhattan crib with my guess is your money amoung others. Now what if a conservative did that? There was also statements that the left were going to shoot marbles at the police horses with a slingshot and so on. They wanted to shut the convention down. Much to their credit they didn't inter people, they provided a nice place for them to go and say whatever they wanted to. Go ahead, turn the air blue. There was even reporters over there with cameramen. A golden opportunity was lost by criticizing the free speech zone instead of something else.
...I have no doubt that the presendent knows exactly what those protesters wanted to say to him. What was denied them was the right to say it.....
Maybe I'm missing something. You are making a distinction without a difference. The message got through but you feel that everyone has a right to harrass others? Where would you draw the line? When you get too obnoxious bad things happen out of desperation. Sometimes very bad things. Do you want that? In the 1960's people were shot and killed at Ohio State during a protest (and a song about it - Tin Soldiers). There was also a riot at the 1968 Democratic Convention. Maybe you want blood to run in the streets again? Be careful what you wish for, you might get it.
Yes, your right. If they still have such a policy write a letter to them. When they get a letter it is much more difficult to ignore. I thought it was yet another folly by officials.
The one thing that I am still offended at is the Statue of Liberty is only open to her feet. It is looking like the park service will never open it all the way up again. I understand a LOT of pressure has been put upon them to open it, no dice. Well people retire, there is hope yet. Then there is the BS from the NYC fire department claiming it isn't safe. Not one problem in 100 years but they think it is unsafe.
Your not behind on your English, just your history I think. You may think I'm somehow defending this administration, I'm not. I'm an equal opportunity basher.
Attaching a new name - "free speech zone" doesn't mean it never existed before 911 and that is my point. This has been going on all along, to a larger extent in the 1960's.
What the court has said is that you do have a right to say what you want (and you still do today), you don't have a right to violate other people's rights.
Having said all of that, there is a new twist in that some local's (as I have said before) implemented what amounts to a cage as you talked about. They don't seem to care which side you are on as I mentioned before - they had a barbed wire cage (like something out of the soviet era) for the Republican protesters at the Democratic convention. In the past they simply arrested you and put you on a bus or some other detention area. So instead of you being out of site and out of mind you can stand in a cage and get that photogenic picture for your cause on the front page of the paper.
The bottom line is I have yet to hear one single issue that has somehow been not voiced. Maybe you have an example? Keep in mind that people not agreeing with you doesn't mean they didn't hear your message. Maybe you think the President (whoever that happens to be at that time) never reads the papers or would know what would be on your sign? They do. Keep that in mind, it does matter, they do know. You can also write a letter to the President if you want. He is at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave Washington DC 20001. Sometimes they respond personally, other times not at all. The last response letter I have is from Regan.
There is a followup to that. They were beaten back on that policy. I visited their site and they do have safety initiatives - http://www.mbta.com/traveling_t/safety_index.asp. I don't see where it says you cannot take pictures today. My guess is that you can, the original article seems to be out to (paid) archive. You may run into someone that thinks they know the law and they don't. I also want to point out that was a local thing that was done by local officials (Democrats in this case).
As for taking pictures, I do it a lot. As recently as yesterday I took pictures of a famous bridge and last week very detailed pictures of other rail systems. There is a prohibition on Federal installations (unless expressly allowed like a NASA event for example), that goes back way beyond 911 though.
I remember they jacked up some guy trying to take pictures of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge but let him go later. Seems to me he was doing stuff to intentionally bring attention to himself. Just be patient. They have to realize that it is an excersize in futility. Especially with camera phone's and new camera's with an uplink. By the time a cop is there, the data could be across the country or world. This wasn't possible back then unless you had a prototype of some sort.
Handheld's were very useful in the NYC (Republican convention) demo's for example. They showed that some people were arrested without cause. They also showed that there was no such thing as police brutality as the Demo's were claiming. Seems to me that they did show some brutality in the case of the Democratic convention in Mass. against the conservative protesters. Even camera's in cop cars have indicted cops of misbehaving. Smile, you could be on camera!
I think you have been listening too much to the nay sayers (sometimes called the left). You can still do whatever you want just as you could before, if not more so because of handheld video camera's. Some people seem to have this illusion that before 911 you could do anything you wanted - blow up stuff, act like a maniac and nothing happened (in the 1960's terrible things happened to protesters and even students that happened to be at the wrong place, wrong time and got convicted of stuff they didn't do). Check out how the government reacted in 1995 after the McVeigh bombing. It was worse than 911! The Clinton administration even got down into your TV set with the ratings (V) chip that is in every new set today. They even wanted to impose the clipper algorithm for encryption (they had a backdoor). You're actually far better off now, unless you want to blow stuff up or kill people. After all, they didn't allow everyone to do whatever they wanted back in Franklin's day either.
Temporary safety that he was referring to is more like "gun control" movements today. The more gun control you have the less control over guns you have. More guns == less crime. Fewer guns == more crime. They felt so strongly about that they wrote it into the Constitution as the 2nd Ammendment. This is further backed up by the Federalist papers that clearly show they ment it as an individual right along with all of the other 1st 10 Ammendments (AKA The Bill of Rights). We the people, not we the government!
Please don't feel that I'm berating you, making fun of you or think your stupid or something. It is good that people question things because if you don't guard your freedom, it will go away. Eternal vigilence is needed. That is why we must guard our country from the Politically Correct crowd that wants to limit everyone's freedom, even the freedom of thought (sometimes disguised as "hate crime" laws).
He isn't a hypocrite, he freed his slaves. It is easy to criticize him for not doing it earlier in today's time. Things are a LOT different now. He was simply born into that system (they all were) and when in Rome, do as the Roman's do. If he hadn't then history could be very different. He may had been relegated as a footnote or kicked out of things all together. See the film 1776 (now on DVD though I had to special order mine), it explains a lot of this. It also shows just how much courage those men had. They took on the most powerful Army and Navy in the world and won. Even though the Brits had help from German Mercenaries. Then we had to do it all over again in 1812.
Ben was an incredible man. I think they should teach about him in school a lot more. How he rose from not much to owning printing shops up and down the east coast and into the Carribean to selling them when he was about 40 and became a full time inventor. He even invented the lightning rod that is put on top of buildings amoung many other things. He didn't patent it because he said it was too important to take a chance that someone couldn't afford it for his gain. On the downside he really knew how to entertain the ladies. So much so it is a wonder he didn't cause an international incident.
I have to strongly disagree with the judge by letting him out on appeal. The judge says this is a new law..bla bla bla... let him out. How come the judge didn't make him stay in jail on appeal! Waste some of his time! He has wasted enough of ours, stealing bandwidth, storage and so on. 9 years is not nearly long enough either. Should be at least double that and big fine. Make sure the crime doesn't pay.
Sorry slashdotters, I see a huge amount of resources, fuel and money going up in smoke. Hard to not say anything. Viva la France and good luck.
Oh well.

Yea, I'm not to crazy about that either. Better than being intercepted or shot down I hope.
They will say they can mass produce the operation and do it far cheaper than the Japanese.
I bet it would turn Bill Gates pale if he found out that only 25% of the 136,000 machines still have Windows on them. The rest were upgraded to Linux.
Physics experiments over the past hundred years or so have demonstrated that light has a dual nature.
----snip-----
also GSFC NASA
There is a duality between them. Light is a particle, you can even turn a light turbine with it. Mod me up.
There again she could be showing us smoke and mirrors. This is light after all. I'm still on the skeptical side.
This guy is on the floor of the Republican convention - USATODAY .
The judge says this is a new law ..bla bla bla... let him out. How come the judge didn't make him stay in jail on appeal! Waste some of his time! He has wasted enough of ours, stealing bandwidth, storage and so on. 9 years is not nearly long enough either. Should be at least double that and big fine. Make sure the crime doesn't pay.
