I worked at a drug store for 3 years. All we ever did when the alarm went off was to tell the customer to ignore it and "go ahead" out the door. It's what the other employees did while i was being trained so I never questioned it. (I didn't want to get into fights with customers either)
The alarm gets activated by tags placed on or inside the packaging. These tags are supposed to be deactivated by a pad under the counter at the cash register, (The pads "beep" when a tag is deactivated) but it doesn't always work the way it's supposed to. Active cellphones also used to set the alarm off and cause the pads to beep, forcing us to shut them off. Since the tags that activate the alarm are usually placed on the outside of the packaging, people who want to steal would just take the products out of the boxes before leaving the store. If you search the shelves at the end of the night you come across a lot of empty boxes of razor blades, medicines, etc. The whole system is pretty useless. It does nothing but annoy the employees and embarass the customers
I block whatever I can... Flash, animated gif, text, etc. I use Adblock, UserContent.css, Greasemonkey, DNS, whatever. I know it's not exactly the most moral thing to do in many cases, but I do it anyway. I don't like looking at advertisments and that's that. I know there's many ad-supported sites out there, but my blocking of ads isn't going to put a page out of business.
Advertisements are going to get more and more intrusive as time goes on and Ad blocking will get better and better. It's going to happen that way whether I block ads or not. Sure, it would be great if everyone stopped blocking ads or advertisers stopped being so annoying, but life just doesn't work that way..
I just started using Flickr about a month ago and I think it's great. Yahoo is going to ruin it. I don't want people who look through my pictures to have to go through pages of ads just to see them.

And can't we have that already with "electric eye" technology, solar cells, etc. Not that this isn't pretty cool stuff.
