    Well, care of google:
    100 - (((30 seconds) / (1 year)) * 100) = 99.9999049

    So if you're trying to keep up 6 9s for some super critical system, you've just used a years worth of downtime.

    Even for lower numbers of nines, you still don't get many minutes per year for patching, assuming no hardware failures ever.

    That comment in particular could be modded Insightful because it is saying that here is evidence of radical climate change occurring without contribution by mankind. Who says it was a radical change? Maybe was gradual over the course of 10 million years.

    Considering our outright lack of knowledge on this event, I fail to see how it can be an effective counter-example for humans being a probable contributor to global warming.

    Or did I just fall for another troll?

    The free media is more than adequate. I have to go out of my way to buy physical media or 'legal' downloads. The 'legal' alternatives are no higher quality, cost money, and are harder to find. You generally can't preview them either.

    So why do I buy 'legal' media? I want to support the artists, the recording engineers, etc. I wish there was a better way to do it, but at the moment there isnt.

    Friction also equals heat. I imagine that a hard drive spinning at 10,000 RPM would generate quite a bit of friction. no. input energy = heat.

    more friciton = more input energy, so theres no reason to look any further than how much energy it consumes, no matter what your thoughts are on high RPM platters.

    I agree completely. I want a decent keyboard, and a display as wide as the keyboard but no wider. Many widescreen laptops I see have dead space on either side of the keyboard. What a waste of space!

    IMO, a 14" regular format laptop is the ideal form factor. Good sized keyboard, no wasted space. Big enough.

    Two things:

    1. You did not mention CPU speed throttling...

    It works as intended. Automatically switches modes depending on load.

    2. The success of ACPI is dependent on the BIOS. In turn, BIOS suppliers tend to make ACPI code which works with Windows without consideration for the standard, Yes. But linux seems to be doing quite well. From what you say, it seems like freebsd might not be doing as well.

    My reply was directed to that one comment and that comment alone. They claimed to be an advanced user who couldnt do $simple_task. Considering $simple_task is simple (by definition), the original assertion (user = advanced) must have been false.

    The user may edit metamodes using the nvidia-settings program that comes with the drivers.

    Plus anyone running a dual head setup with specific requests like this isn't "Joe Sixpack".

    Unless its winter. In that case 100% of the energy going into your computer is going towards heating your house. Sure electricity is more expensive than gas, but it'll drastically change your numbers for winter months.

    If you could be more specific, you'd probably get some pointers. As it stands, I'm considering you either a) not a very advanced computer user, b) using some whacked out hardware or c) trolling, as configuring graphics drivers in ubuntu these days is trivial.

    Really? tbh, I havent researched this much, but its smooth sailing on my thinkpad T23. Sure its an older notebook, so the drivers have had longer to stabilize, but I get all my power management junk.

    -It properly drops the processor into sleep modes (confirmed by powertop)
    -It parks the HDD after a set time
    -It suspends/sleeps/resumes fine, including bringing wifi back
    -I get 3 hours out of it, which is exactly what the specs say I should get.

    So I'm not so sure the situation is as abysmal as you suggest.

    Has America gotten so fat and lazy that 6 to 8 lbs is considered a huge burden? I have a 15" notebook from 2001 and it's carrying case is no bigger than a standard messenger bag as well.. Are you so fat and lazy that your notebook only weighs 6 to 8lbs? I have an old luggable that weighs 20 lbs. And its carrying case is no larger than a large briefcase.

    Stop eating and get a real computer, fatass.

    The band depends on where you live.

    And yes, bell offers dry dsl. And they don't even charge an additional fee. That's the only thing keeping me with bell right now. That extra $10 that I'd have to pay anywhere else is just enough to keep me.

    Great suggestion, other than the fact the macbook costs significantly more, doesnt have a trackpoint, doesn't have a right click button and isn't available in 14" non-widescreen.

    All those other things aside, are macbooks actually as tough as thinkpads? I feel pretty confident I could bludgeon several people with mine before it would become any worse for the wear

    the other two replies were cryptic or useless, so here goes:

    Bandwidth, when speaking about transmitted signals, refers to the chunk of airwaves taken by that signal. TV and FM take up a huge band of frequencies while sending relatively little data. For example, FM radio stations are spaced 200khz apart, so for each station there is 200khz worth of frequencies consumed for a single audio signal. Therefore there is a push by some to drop them, and re-allocate the air waves in a more efficient manner.

    These fines should be based on some percentage of the profits from the activity in question. And that percentage should be over 100%. What if the TVs are loss leaders? Would the FCC owe /them/ money?
