Why not build your own set top box using video capture cards that *do not* respect the broadcast flag? Ala http://www.pchdtv.com/
Outputting from your set top box via dvi/hdmi cable would not be an issue.
Granted, my mother would not be able to build her own set top box and install mythtv, but I think the majority of the readers here could.

I didn't like Turbo tax because it was tough to play those "what if" scenarios. Like, what if I had made 100 dollars more than I did, or had 12 more kids, etc...

Not quite open source. But free as in beer.
I've been using this guy's spread sheet for the past three years. Labled as 'Excel' but I've actually used it in Open Office. Prints nice.
