I don't think most OS X users will notice the BSD core except for increased stability & shit like that. Apple will do a fine job of hiding the complex stuff from people who don't want to see it... which in itself is a good thing, as long as it doesn't restrict more advanced users' access to it.

That movie, the Pirates of Silicon Valley, is a fscking disaster. Overacted and with bad dialogue. Also, it twists the facts around like hell...f.e. Steve Jobs never ignored any daughter or mistreated any former spouse, although Apple's first computer Lisa was named after his daughter.
And there is a huge gap in the story in the film. It claims that MS gave DOS to IBM, when they first gave them OS/2, and then released DOS in competition.
And, hell, even Steve Jobs isn't as evil as that. The guy went to India in search of spiritual enlightenment....anyone with a such a chilled perspective of things can't be all bad.
Are you sure? I know that the MacOS will only run on machines that have some sort of ROM imbedded in the motherboard. This is a trick that Apple use to maintain control of their OS...that is, it can only run on their machines or on the clones.
I know that chip manufacturers with processor upgrades for the iMac had to use old processor cards because they could not manufacture the ROM in the daughtercard and were turned down in their petition to Apple.
You're right. Of course, the OS slows down a lot of apps and it's very annoying when you have state-of-the-art CPU's. But that had better change when OS X comes.

Ehm..that's bullshit. The MacOS platform is growing steadily, and has gained quite a lot of market share in the last two years compared to Apple's bad period under that Gill guy. More and more companies are porting their software to the Mac, amongst them Id Software with Quake 2, and Unreal Tournament etc.
As for Adobe ditching the Mac, that's complete nonsense. Macs are widely used by creative professionals and thus Adobe makes a lot of money from their MacOS Photoshop, which is not ported but developed natively....and Office is still going strong on the Mac, not that I use it.
Hm....that's not correct. In order to run MacOS, a PowerPC compatible computer must have an Apple ROM in the motherboard, built only to closed specs owned by Apple...therefore nobody can compete with Apple when it comes to hardware for MacOS. Now, Linux on the other hand....

Although I like quite a lot of "the system", at least as we have it back home in Iceland, where I live, I can see quite a bit of things that I'd want remedied in America.

Hmm...I don't consider myself a zealot or an especial fanatic when it comes to Macs. However, I get very pissed off when I see all these people posting insulting remarks about the users of Apple hardware, based on stupid assumptions.
As to Windows, if you don't agree with my statements above then you are clearly a bad judge of operating systems, and your knowledge of hardware is clearly inadequate.

I run Linux on my <i>overclocked</i> G4 and use it among other things to write code in Perl and C. Now, tell me how this is lacking in nerddom?
For me, Windows has always been the ultimate piece of dung when it comes to computers.
As for sticking with a dying x86 processor, faulty ethernet cards and corrupted power supplies..., I buy good, expensive Apple hardware and am pleased with it.
As to the MacOS, which is an outdated OS, hopefully Apple will do some sensible things with the new MacOS X. Still....if you don't mind not playing games I think you'll find that MacOS does not suffer from lack of applications.
As to your suggestion that DOS is better....I don't think it even deserves a reply. I suspect you're one of those people who think they're computer nerds when all they know is how to configure BAT files....or whatever.

I might point out that MacOS X is MacOS number 10, as in coming after 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9, and that X is the Roman numeral for 10. Now, I realize that it may be hard for some people to understand, but I think the majority of people who use Macs, or are about to use Macs, have absolutely no idea what the X Windows System is and really don't care.
Besides, I think X-Windows is so clumsy that any association with it would be negative and certainly not intentional.....and of course it contains the "no-no!" word "Windows" (shudder).. I feel the people behing the X-Windows project might have been more tasteful.
And no, this is not a flamebait or a troll...just my 2.
I might point out that I am not American. I live in Reykjavik, Iceland, and do not have a drop of American blood. However, our good way of life today is mostly thanks to Yanks. I hated Americans for a long time, before I grew to realise this. I hated all the fat, ugly people, the hypocrisy, the sick morality und alles, but I realise that we Europeans owe America a lot....hell, they saved us from the greatest menace of all...Communism.
I did not say that Americans invented the computer. However, it is pretty obvious that American companies made the personal computer a reality for middle-class homes, not just for the super-rich. Same goes for Linux. If it hadn't been embraced so vehemently by Americans, I doubt if Linux would have caught on, not to mention the Linux-promoting agendas of companies like RedHat (though I prefer SuSE myself).

The US keeps bitching that "we Europeans" can't take care of ourselves, and need their "constant protection". Europe is getting an army and is propably going to pool their arsenal of nukes. The Eurofighter, by the way, is superior to current US jet fighters when it comes to maneuverability and speed. All European states have had relatively efficient and professional intelligence services since World War 2.
Europe isn't backwards. It's just different. Many Americans fail to realise that by the rest of the world's standards they are fat, lazy and with an economy that is grossly unjust and encourages an inequal distribution of wealth....not to mention America's opressive way of forcing its culture on everyone else.

Perl is the best. The more popular PHP server side includes are for sissies. I like to get my hands dirty with real code.
