Exactly. If you're having to cheat in your major, either you've picked the wrong major (and are in denial about the need to change it), or you're just incredibly lazy. You think you're cheating the school, but at the end of the day, you're really cheating yourself (especially when the day comes when you have a job and might actually need to know your stuff).

One of the proudest things I can say is that I went through an undergrad and several grad degrees and never once cheated (I would have never trusted anyone else's work as much as I trust my own work anyway). I was tempted once in a gen-ed class with an awful professor where I was going to get a "C" (not because of the material so much as the prof's awful teaching and even more awful testing practices). But even in that case, I just took the "C" and vowed to warn other students about that professor (piece of shit had tenure and hung around like a school plague).

I did witness plenty of others cheating, but they were usually not the brightest guys in the room. A fellow grad student got the boot just a few months before she was to get her Masters when she got caught plagiarizing a paper (they went back and found that she had been plagiarizing almost all her stuff for some time, even on her Master's thesis). I felt more sorry for these people than angry at them, though.

But the rest of us, stuck with all of our fully-functional brains, are forced to sometimes contemplate serious matters that aren't so happy. Sure, we sometimes get depressed. But humanity probably wouldn't make much scientific, intellectual, or cultural progress if everyone was walking around every day drugged-up and lobotomized, with stupid goddamn grins on their faces.

No, in the original 1980-1986 "trilogy of trilogies" plan (the reason they added the "Episode IV" to the title sequence of Star Wars in 1981) Lucas was going to produce three sets of movies of three each (three prequels and three sequels to the originals)--with R2D2 and C3PO being the only characters to consistently appear in all three sets of films. I think either you're joking or you got the "Han and Leia's kids fighting the emperor" things from the (much later) books--or from some Lucas revisionism (he's been about half-batshit crazy for many years now and makes all kinds of claims that contradict both his earlier statements and interviews from those who worked with him during the time of the originals).

  13. "Much darker" my ass on Star Wars TV Show Tainted By Memories of Jar Jar · · Score: 5, Insightful

These days "Much darker than its predecessor" has become Hollywood doublespeak. It means nothing. "This Harry Potter movie will be much darker than the last one" is just the studio's way of trying to get more adults to come see it (at the end of the day, it still ends up being the same PG-13 rated CGI-fest).

Here's a good rule of thumb, if they have to *say* it's much darker, it probably isn't. If you want to see if it's just doublespeak, ask the simple follow-up question "But it's still suitable for kids, right?" If they fall over themselves saying yes, then you know the "much darker" thing is just a con.

Well you had better tell that to all the companies that sell PC's with Linux. In fact, I bought a Asus netbook just a little over a year ago with Linux pre-installed. Even long-standing Windows stalwart Dell offers Linux on at least some models.

With Windows, you have all the choice in the world--install it or don't on just about anything. With OS X you have exactly two choices--Apple or nothing. And "marketshare" has nothing to do with anti-competitive behavior. MS wasn't charged by the EU and others with having too much marketshare, they were accused of anti-competitive behavior. I think that charge was unfair. And, if that ruling wasn't unfair, then the EU and the MS critics are certainly being unfair in not applying the same standards to Apple that they applied to MS.

Uh, you are not only completely wrong on that--you've got it BACKWARDS. MS sells Windows as a stand-alone product, which you are free to install on any Mac (ever hear of Bootcamp?) or any other computer you wish. However, the opposite it NOT true. Apple will not let you install OS X on anything but their machines. With Windows, you are free to buy any computer you wish (including an Apple) and use or not use Windows on it. With OS X you MUST buy an Apple--other computers are not allowed and they will sue the shit out of you if you even try to make a computer that will run their OS.

MS isn't the one playing hardball with the competition here. Apple is.

Imagine if MS suddenly told you that Windows software will now only let you install MS-approved software and then banned alternative browsers like Firefox and Opera from even being installed on Windows. Just because they're the most popular doesn't mean MS forces anyone to put it on their systems. And, you're right. There is a big difference between MS's dealings with OEM's and Apple's complete lockdown of its competition. Apple is much worse. Just try producing an Apple clone or putting OS X on your non-Apple computer sometime and find out Apple treats OEM's that dare to cross *THEM*.

If it does, great. If not, you could always shutter the free version and say "Sorry freeloaders." There are a lot of people willing to pay a premium for a good service (just look at all the subscribers to /.). But realistically, if someone is a freeloader and isn't willing to look at ads to begin with--you're not going to change their nature just by making even more annoying ads (you're just going to drive away a lot of other people who might actually be willing to pay for a premium ad-free version). If you have to dump the freeloaders at some point, I don't think it will be a big loss.
