  1. REALLY old news on New Virus Attacks Via RAR Files · · Score: 3, Informative

Umm, this is REALLY old news. This particular method of trying to sneak past virus scanners has been around since at least March 2004 (search Google for W32.Beagle@mm!rar).

  2. I took my critical data with me on Neither Rain, Nor Snow, Nor Dark of Night... · · Score: 2, Interesting

I was going to pack my PC in the trunk and take it with me (full tower packed with hard drives) but changed my mind.

I backed up all my critical personal data to DVD and took it with me to our data center near Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where I spent the night on an air mattress in an empty office.

The data center is rated to take a high category 3 strike on the outside of the building (140 mph reinforced glass windows) and up to a category 5 strike on the reinforced concrete data center core. We also have 2 X 1500kw generators and enough fuel to last over a week.

I was actually looking out the window a few minutes ago and you would hardly think there was a hurricane coming. It looked a bit wet but only a light breeze.

We have about 40 people here (the disaster recovery team and their families) and a lot of them brought their pets as well (I can hear a dog barking from an office down the hall).

I should have a great view of the hurricane as it comes through due to the large reinforced glass windows (wish I had brought a video camera) and am not as concerned now that it has been downgraded to a category 2.

The only thing that would suck is if my home floods as I have a LOT of computer and home theater equipment on or near the floor. I have shutters up to protect the windows but there is nothing I can do to stop flooding.

Well I am just rambling on now. There is nothing else to do except wait at this point and at the speed Francis is moving I could easily be in here for another 24 to 36 hours.

  5. Re:Why the '1' ?? on 11 Digit Dialing Comes Home to New York · · Score: 1

Her in South Florida I live between two 10 digit area codes and one that still uses 7 digit dialing. Consequently I have to deal with the fact that a (relatively) local number might be 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx or xxx-xxx-xxxx or just xxx-xxxx. Sometimes I have to dial 1 (long distance) to reach someone 20 miles away in the same area code. On other occasions I don't have to, even though the person lives further away in the same area code. Same goes for each of the other area codes, which leads to a lot of possible combinations. Drives me crazy sometimes as there seems to be little logic behind the system and I sometimes have to dial a number 2-3 times before I hit the right combination.

  6. Re:Jet fuel isn't that flammable on Cellphones On Airplanes · · Score: 1

Back when I was a professional pilot I dealt with jet fuel a lot. There is a combustion retardant added to the jet fuel itself which makes it very hard to ignite. I have seen someone demonstrate putting out a match in jet fuel as you describe.

Evaporated jet fuel vapor, on the other hand, is HIGHLY explosive. Nearly empty fuel tanks on an airplane are a dangerous condition to be in (airplanes are usually stored with either full or completely empty tanks for this reason). A spark can completely destroy an airplane if it ignites the vapor in the tanks (It is thought that this is what happened to TWA flight 800).

During fueling, the aircraft, pump truck and all other equipment is grounded. The pump truck and aircraft are also cross grounded to eliminate any difference in electrical potential between them.

Actually they were not South Africa guerrillas. The troops fighting in Angola were from the South African Defense Force (i.e. they were part of the South African government military forces).
Also, the South Africans were fighting alongside American soldiers (Possibly CIA, I don't remember) who pulled out at the last minute and left the South Africans to fend for themselves. I heard about this first hand from ex-SADF friends of mine who were there.
I was living in South Africa during that period and vaguely remember the news reports and my parents talking about the situation (I was pretty young at the time).

Booted Mandrake 7.0 beta from the CD and setup detected my Logitech USB mouse automatically and launched into the X windows setup.
I was able to use my mouse to set everything up and found that after I rebooted into my new install it worked flawlessly in X Windows under Gnome and KDE.
This is the first distribution I have used that has been able to automatically detect and set my USB mouse up with no user intervention.
    Good Stuff.
