I've only used Rails a bit, but I've used Ruby a lot. It's by far the most flexible language I've ever used. It allows programmers to modify the most fundmental aspects of the language. Some argue this is a bad thing, and it may be. However, having the freedom to do that is very empowering. Don't get me wrong, other OO scripting languages are great too... Python for example. And, they share many concepts with Ruby. The things that make Ruby stand out (to me) are the ease of modification and syntax flexibility. IMO, Ruby is a wonderul toolkit that will allow one to build most anything, even more specialized tools like Rails.
If you have a Windows domain and use mostly XP and 2003 machines... try using the built-in 'Software Restriction Policy' to prevent the path %systemroot%/system32/shimgvw.dll this will apply to all of the machines in the domain.
No 'showdown' is needed. Aren't there enough flamewars around the Web as it is? Technically, both bootloaders are good. Use the one that works best for you.
Politically, if you must use only GPL software, then go with GRUB. LILO has a _very_ open license, but it does not meet RMS's strict and unyeilding requirements.

If you're able to get the game to run (that's a big if), and then keep it running, you'll find that it's not that big of an improvement over previous civs when it comes to game play. I have a brand new computer with a top-notch ATI card that runs _every_ game I throw at it... except civ4.
Python and Perl are not comparable. Python is a well-designed language. It scales. It's elegant. It's simple and easy to use... your grandmother could code in Python after a few hours. Perl is none of these things.
Looks like the 'Mac Fanatics' are modding you down LOL. This went from a 4 to a 1 in under a minute. Keep drinking Steve's Koolaid kiddies;) and keep buying their hardware.
Mod parent up!!! Too many people are mis-informed about XP SP2. Parent is right on. I've see automatic update download SP2 on several dozen machines, but never automaticall install.
Mod parent up!!! I have 3 W2K3 server (all of which have auto updates enabled) and NONE of them automatically downloaded and installed it. This is the same FUD we heard/hear about XP SP2... let me say it once more loud and clear:
Automatic Updates does not install service packs. It will download them, but it has never and will never install them. They have a EULA that must be accepted, disclaimers that must be clicked through, etc. Stop spreading lies about Automatic Update. The people spreading this crap are a) Lying or b) Stupid or c) All of the above
How do they know that people aren't lying?

Also, it seems that US universities will continue to be THE hot place for ID theft. Here's an interesting page that descibes how the liberal ideology in IT management at US universities that, IMO, is the main reason they are continually and successfully hacked.

To get the full benifit of SQL on Rails, noobs should seriously consider learning a bit about SQL first!
It's a god damned PC. Call it what it is :)

They've got a bone to pick with MS. Remember how NT crushed Netware back in the mid to late 90's. Seems Novell wants another hurtin'

Let's all hope they do a little better this time around... for hope is eternal
