  1. MS bashing on Mercury Researchers Explain Microsoft .NET · · Score: 3

Yet another example of how immature the slashdot audience is. Microsoft has come up with a winnning technology here, it's going to be the future of computing as we know it. Just because its not GNU licensed and powered by Linux doesn't mean that we can't appreciate their work. Microsoft has plenty of programmers who have the same ideas as we do, and they're implementing them, better. If the Linux side of things wants to bash MS, they should at least find some real problem of theirs, such as Bill Gate's alleged affair with an intern, rather than bash a wonderful and proven product such as .NET which has been out for years and is succeeding beyond Microsoft's wildest dreams. MS's Windows Terminal Server performs over 30x as quick as XFree does, while providing even more functionality, such as a way to save files on Microsoft's core server with the touch of a button. Linux lovers watch out, the future of computing is already here, and its name is .NET

Real fans of the series already knew this. This is old news and everyone has known about it for a long time. But that isn't really the problem, the real problem is all the lame jokes people will make about Life, The Universe and Everything in the comments section. I'd like some insight or something, not a bunch of lame "42" jokes. Slashdot's quality has gone from decent to piss poor in the past several months. I find kuro5hin to be much more interesting, and people actually try to make sense there. The site promotes discussion, not lame jokes and stupid trolls. Slashdot, you have failed us yet again.

These computers are used for scientific research, not games and wank fodder. It seems that /. has the urge to post a story like this once every other day, which is why they suck.

Heh, I've always wondered about the original region controls on the older models, there's basically a jumper which reads "do not remove or the drive will lock to region of the first disc it reads." Did the MPAA demand that OEMs set the drive region using this, or is it just for crazy masochists who *enjoy* being locked in to such things. Anyways, I got a Pioneer DVD-302 from hitechcafe for $45 a little while ago. It's only 2.6x DVD, but its Ultra-SCSI and slot load, and it rips damn well and quick. The combination of the unlocked drive (some can be unlocked with new firmare) and cinemaster+dvd genie (here) allow you complete freedom, at least in windows.

  7. EFM? on Building Nautilus: Behind The Scenes · · Score: 3

I've stopped using GNOME a long time ago to replace it with just plain enlightenment. I've recently started using EFM, the enlightenment file manager. While EFM is still pretty slow and buggy (version 0.0.0), it has many features which make it unlike KDE and GNOME's filemanagers. For example, if you begin typing in a window, a transparent box will come up so you can see what you're typing, with this you can do all sorts of things, from selecitng files to running commands to opening web pages. If you were to type 'www.slashdot.org' it will open a new NS window of it, typing 'make' will launch an Eterm running make in the current directory. EFM fits my needs better than any of the other linux FMs that I've seen, annd I can't wait for it to get more stable. Though nautilus has many interesting features which EFM doesn't, they're probably aimed at different audiences anyway, EFM is more 'graphical shell' than filemanager. Nautilus may be good for people who want an embedded web browser/mp3 player/etc. in their filemanager, but I think that we can all benefit from their work, regardless of weather we are interested in the filemanager itself.

Personally, I don't see who really buys games at K-Mart, they're likely to be more expensive, I know their CDs are and have no selection. Though this does set a dangerous precedent that I'd hate to see other larger stores follow. I wonder if this will contribute to downloading the games off warez rooms on IRC since the kid can't buy it for real in the store.

Though he still hasn't been able to get the linux 3d support working right. But if the G450 is as good as expected, I'd be happy to own one. As far as the Durons go, I've been looking into getting a new CPU, but was going to get a Celeron2 until I found that my motherboard can't use the new .18 micron chips. Also they mention that it won't be sold directly, but only as part of a subscription service like i-opener. Sony has recently came out with a high density MD which they call MD^2 or MD View depending on the day of the week, this disc stores 640MB and was originally (IIRC) to be used as the PS2's software format. However both the MD Data and MD^2 discs run about $15 a piece, still less than Memory Stick, but still not the $2 that an audio disc costs.

Building communication towers here is difficult because some yuppie mom has to complain about not wanting the thing in her backyard so they have to put it in the middle of a forest away from civilization and just expect it to work. Anyways, why can't we standardize over here too, I can count about half a dozen 'standards' for wireless com, whereas europe has decided almost universally to use GSM. In the real stadium all you see is a blank mat. One thing I've also noticed is the not so obvious removal of Sony logos on TVs and logos on shirts, giving the attitude from the producers that "If you don't pay for your logo to be on TV, we'll take it off" even for simple things like a television or a shirt.
