  1. Re:Contracts! on Freelance Web Developer Best Practices? · · Score: 1

A contract is only worth anything if you can enforce it.

Here in Belgium there is such a thing as a legal-insurance, costs about 300 euros a year. If you have a non-paying customer or get sued by a customer or have a valid reason to sue a customer or supplier, they will go after them if you can prove your case.
If i've been informed correctly an acknowledged order form (that makes mention of your terms) from your client via email can be enough for them to start making a case.
Luckily I have never (in the past 10 or so years) had cause to use them.
I assume though, that just the threat of that call by the lawfirm and/or collection agencies should be enough to spook most small/midsize companies or persons into paying.

Sorry to dissapoint you on that one, but here in the Netherlands, developers are switching to macs in droves. Mainly because of the tri-os thingie and virtualisation. It's handy to have every os under your fingertips, though I must say that this has only been possible since the switch to intel. BEfore that you would be crazy to have switched. (and I was, because of the nice shiny opacity of my terminal app.) I went from win32 poweruser to 10 year linux admin to now a clueless osx user. It's nice to have an operating system a monkey can use for those late nights, .. and its even nicer to have a shell and POSIX compliant UNIX to work and play in. plus the resume from suspend in less than a second is a great benefit if you want to jot down some notes, or get something done before you forgot it. happily being an airhead on a MacBook :) Ofcourse If you are one of those, unlucky people, who are forced to work on icky .NET apps... maybe you won't throw out your windos yet

"And give the developers of that site an excuse to keep producing bad code?"

Unfortunately, while IE has biggest browser share, these bad ie-only coders will remain employed and able to 'produce bad code'.

If chrome did have an ie-compatible mode (maybe even automagically doing it) they could drop support for it when they have a bigger market share, if they were so inclined.

It's not that hard, the mshtml component is free to use by any software manufacturer iirc. Though i would assume, that in google's browser model it would rank as one of those 'nasty' plugins the comic explained about, one that does too much on a too high a level.

I think the market share of internet explorer makes people code for it, not the used techniques, building in mshtml support into chrome would only make more people 'switch'. Mshtml could be to google what Intel did for apple
