  1. cant win... on Using AI to Monitor Kids Online · · Score: 1

Chances are, the kids that are targeted here (i'm going to assume 10-15 y/o) are probably more mature than to fall for the cute little character this software offers. While I was one of the many that fell for Bonzi Buddy when i was 12, it didnt take long for me to figure out something was up. Most likely, the kids whose parents deem it necessary to buy this software aren't accidentally stumbling upon these sites, but searching them out. Eventually, survival of the fittest kicks in. The sneaky stay sneaky, and the less-so get caught. But they will always find ways around any security features. browsers save history? - clear history browsers store temp files? - download cleaning program such as window washer browser blocks individual URLs? - google something and its bound to show up in there all the original "security" solutions have been bypassed. Its like the approach to viruses that Windows XP has. The virus makers are always one step ahead of the "securers", who flail trying to patch every hole in the leaky bucket that is windows security. another example: copyright protection even now, as /. has shown, blu-ray protection has already been cracked. it never takes the crackers too long to bypass it.

the thing about used games, (not current gen games, but pre-2000 games), is that while the graphics were not super realistic 3d coolness, what was "missing" in graphics was made up and even more so in gameplay and replay value. Anyone from just about any time period, whether they have played a SNES game or not, can probably sit down and enjoy it out of the box without being blown away by complexity. Besides, where else would nostalgic gamers turn to get their fix?

  4. Re:Hypnotism requires lack of responsibility on Hypnosis Gets Positive Recognition · · Score: 1

this isnt true. first of all, hypnosis in this sense is not mind control...yet. the affect hypnosis has on the mind is a suggestive one, about which you are right, it cant make you do anything. But thats not what the article is talking about. the article is about changing perception, not controlling someones mind to complete instructed actions.

when in a trance state (or hypnotic state), your mind is open to suggestion, meaning your mind is more willing to believe what someone is instructing.

the example of building jumping is not an adequate one, because your body acts on principles of self-preservation, and it would take not only a re-write of your perception but also a re-write of your internal logic to cause a suicidal action.

  5. bah...Blizzard is doin fine... on WoW Helping or Hurting the Industry? · · Score: 1

last time i checked, video games were meant to entertain...am i right? so if WoW can draw people to commit time to their game, then someone at Blizzard must be doin a good job... WoW isnt the only "time consuming" game either...any one here seen the average playtime for Final Fantasy X? approx 70 hrs...for full completion that is..

i agree...i may be an avid videogame player, but that doesnt mean i can stand to see the same exact episode of cheat!, Filter, and Judgement Day over and over again...xplay however, is TV gold, which stemmed from TechTV pre-G4. Glad that tech is returning to the channel
