  1. greed on What Bugs Apple Fans About Apple · · Score: 5, Interesting

We Apple fans like to see Apple do well, but probably more in terms of selling more products (higher marketshare, becoming more popular in society, etc.) than just higher profits (most of us aren't in it for the money, after all). So for me, one annoying thing Apple does is charge for products or services that could/should be free.

For example, the new software for the iPod touch is a $20 download. This is the same software that's a free update for the iPhone. Even the new software for the Apple TV is a free upgrade. If I were an iPod touch owner, I'd be pretty offended that I have to pay $20 (well, disregarding free jailbreaking options and whatnot) for an update that iPhone users get for free.

Remember iTools? The free service that gave you mail, web storage, etc. if you were a Mac user? In July 2002 it was rebranded as .Mac and Apple began charging $100/year for it. I realize that this increases profits (at least short-term), but I often find myself wishing that companies would accept short-term losses if it would mean an overall increase in marketshare and customer satisfaction. If .Mac were free, it could be marketed as yet another advantage of the Mac (in addition to iLife, etc.). Instead, it's an expensive subscription service that many people know nothing about, nor have they any reason to.

It depends on whether you have tapping turned on. If you do, then you can indeed two-finger-tap to right click. If you prefer to "click" with the button only, then the procedure you described is correct.

Obviously enough to account for an 15.5 percent share ...

True, hence the second part of my sentence, which you conveniently left out; there'll always be people who don't know/care about Leopard, or who would rather have Tiger. But this is a small minority, and my point was that the large increase after Leopard came out wasn't all that surprising.

that's a big jump from the 15.5 percent share it had in September, which was itself the highest share Apple had managed to get so far in 2007.

This big jump makes sense, really. Who in their right mind would buy Tiger a month before Leopard is coming out, unless they specifically can't/wouldn't use Leopard for some reason? It's more impressive to me that they're beating out Microsoft, but I guess MS relies on the PC makers for most of its sales; it doesn't really need to specifically sell Vista when people are replacing their PCs fairly often. Macs generally last longer (or at least are kept longer) from what I hear, so it's more likely that someone will buy a boxed copy of a Mac OS upgrade than a Windows upgrade.

And my main piece of advice to you would be to use Apple-H to hide Windows rather than minimising them, I think that should sidestep all your minimisation woes?

Command-H hides an app, not a window. Minimizing is the only way to hide just one window.

I wondered about those as well, though in the case of Dumbledore's Howler ("Remeber my last, Petunia"), that was explained in book 5 or 6. Dumbledore was referring to his previous letter, in which he told Petunia that she must allow Harry to stay in her home, because of the magical protection that would be given to Number Four, Privet Drive, as long as Harry lived there. The Howler was a reminder to Petunia, which is why after hearing it, she seems to have a change of heart and allows Harry to stay.

I was going to say the same thing. The terrorists have won again, not because they killed 50 people with some bus bombings, or 2,000 people with a few planes, but because their random acts of murder make our leaders think that they can make the world a better place by taking away freedoms.

Our governments have taken away far more freedoms from us than the terrorists ever have. Good job, terrorists: mission accomplished.
