You are talking about having 4 xboxes (boxen?) networked in one place at the same time. This ALONE makes you not part of the gameplaying majority. Just because YOU and your "friends" enjoyed this does NOT make this "the selling point" by any stretch of the imagination!
People like that are what made halo so great... it was the social aspect, not the difficulty of the game, or how easy it is to connect to live (referring to Halo 2)
People like WHAT? From my experience, halo two is like halo one except LESS FUCKING GOOD! Yes, the people who play online may comprise some of the more casual gamers, but are mainly part of your "4 xboxes = a night of fun" crew. It is like any online game where people get competitive: most people who play a lot know the tricks/best spots/best weapons, and whore off them all game until they win. Fair enough you might say, and i can see your point for a lot of FPS's, but A GOOD GAME THIS DOES NOT MAKE! The online play didnt make it a better game...online play is just a god damn feature, and IMHO a feature which people make too much of.
I personally don't even remember ever seeing anything about halo until my friends were playing it in parties... which didnt happen until almost a year after its release. I play on XBox Live all the time now, and the story seems to be the same... So you can rule out Marketing.
While you personally might not remember, many of us "older" gamers remember when Halo was a PC game which looked very promising. Around the time it was announced it was very hyped indeed, and this marketing did play a big part in the early stages. Sorry to say the fact that you and your "buddies" on xbox live dont know this DOESNT RULE OUT MARKETING AT ALL.
i am SO surprised no one has mentioned this yet. It was the only n64 game i knew of which had dynamic lighting, bots in mutiplayer, and high quality textures (for the time), plus loads of other beautiful graphical touches. and all of it on a 90mhz cpu with 8mb ram! i heard rare used all kinds of crazy tricks with the hareware to get it to run at all. i guess even then it only managed 25fps....but what a game!
You yourself just said that vista will come with every new pc...doesn't that account for a significant proportion of the market?
Also, considering the rate at which "Joe user" is convinced by PC world (or whoever) that he needs an upgrade, dont you think its just as prudent to assume this "update" will be just as successful as other "updates"? (See also Windows ME)
Dont get me wrong, i dont think Vista deserves success, but lets not kid ourselves - compared to the sales of open source OS's up until now (assuming as this comment does that sales are the defining factor), it will be a 'hit'.
What i would say to that is that while Firefox may be the current clear winner when it comes to spyware/security concerns, its success will be its downfall.
Soon Firefox users will be a big enough percentage of the global browser market to become a viable target. It will only be a matter of time before spyware and virus authors are giving the latest Firefox build just as much of their special kind of attention as the latest offering from Microsoft.
That's not to say that microsoft hasn't built in certain "features" which mean its browser is fundamentally less secure, but if there's one thing i have learned from using the internet, its that all software is considered secure until the first major vulnerability is discovered.
"WinFS is going to be slower... precaching is what makes Google Desktop fast."
WinFS = MS SQL server (and associated cache/index technology), functioning AS the filesystem. No underlying NTFS or FAT garbage, just pure database tech powering the filestorage/retrieval. How can you possibly think it will be slower? Seriously? We are talking about something DESIGNED for this functionality!
Precaching is "fast" relative to just using the filesystem for a search. Obviously this is because windows filesystems were not initially designed for fast indexed searches. WinFS however (so we are told) will be. The way it will be used requires that it will at least be able to retrieve results at the speed we now browse directories. In reality it will hopefully be a lot more powered.

I think that social idea was the selling point
