Nope, they are named after appearance. I really didn't consider Mac OS's - I have never had a Mac in my house. Panther usually comes and steps on the keyboard when I'm trying to do some shell scripting.... He prefers Linux and bash by the look of it.:-)
I have never observed our two cats (they are siblings) meowing to each other; But the male (Panther) usually is _not_ afraid to utter sound when he wants to be let out / in, or needs some attention - food that is. The female (Tiger) usually just inserts her claws into my toes when I'm sleeping... and get a very quick response.
The cats are ~14 months old now, and I have submitted my will to their wants... They own me:-)
