Well, I'm probably going to again in a few months for a project I'm starting to skel out in my head. I've become somewhat intrigued by low-power-consumption computers.
I'm thinking of building a Pico-ITX kit and trying to get it to run solely from a small solar collector/wind turbine, which I suppose I'll probably have to design myself.
The baby boomers are (were?) a bunch of dope-smoking draft dodgers that have run this country into the ground while their parents wonder why exactly it is that they fought World War II, since they just ended up living under authoritarianism anyway.
Over Christmas, my now almost 95 year-old grandfather apologized to me, my sister and our 2 first cousins for the sorry state of the world that my parents generation created.
However, the boomers did such a good job of screwing things up, and peppering our generation with the semi-retarded after-effects of marijuana on the gametes that the US is pretty much doomed.
Oh well, it was nice while it lasted. What does it take to defect to Russia these days?
My mother was Princeton class of 1977. Back in those days it wasn't exactly 'common knowledge' with 'easy access' how to make nuclear weapons.
One of her good friends who was, I believe, reading for Physics, did his senior thesis on how to make a nuclear weapon. I also believe, though I'm not clear as its been a while since she told me this story, that the fellow in question was not exactly American.
His thesis brought him to the interest of some of the old-line type of "terrorist" organizations like the PFLP. *THAT* brought him to the attention of the FBI and he was arrested and interrogated.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
my first nix experience was pure shell on freebsd. the first *nix box i brought up at home was because e15 was so damned cool. i made a few themes for it under the moniker "EvilGNU" -- mostly just little ports and tweaks of dr13/14 themes and whatnot though.
making E themes is actually why I need glasses to see far away now:-(
no, it was the summer before I left for college. I was working at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator facility as an intern in Instrumentation and Control of the Free Electron Laser. After spending all day staring at high-resolution monitors counting pixels because I was working on spotsize detection, the last thing I needed was bright lights and tiny print when I came home.
When I went to school, I had to use X because I had to program in Java and do stupid Swing things.
About half way into my first semester my girlfriend ditched me after 5 years and I had sort of a break down and ended up switching to the English department, where being a sad, whiny little bitch gets you bonus points.
Then all I did was write papers. I never learned LaTeX, and even if I knew it, I'd have been too lazy to use it, so it was StarOffice and then OpenOffice.org - again, under X.
I'm going back to get another degree in engineering though, so I'm getting out of "lazy mode."
its not so much the images -- w3m can display them in frame buffer.
wow... and with a base price of ONLY $109,000 with a $60,000 reservation fee...
So, I can pre-order one with a down payment of what I could straight up buy most BMWs for... and it only has a range of 220 miles before I need to recharge. Lovely, because, you know... I'm sure that'd be no bother at all to do.
So, looks like I'm spending half the price of an Aston-Martin DBS or a Bentley Continental GT, but I can't go anywhere.
I'll just continue with my dreams of converting a 57 Caddy to run on E100, being super bad-ass, and getting all the pinup girls at the hot rod show.
Its not that we can't make an electric car... its that making a commercially viable electric car would be difficult. The torque, even on hybrids, leaves a whole lot to be desired. You can't move that much.
I'm not sure I'd want to trust my life to some plastic shoe box, and I think most people would concur. Especially a plastic shoe box with low horsepower and shitty acceleration.
We've been launching shit with rockets for a long time -- and we don't have to mass produce and market them.
At least you read it... I'm still trying to figure out how it got labeled "hardhack" even though the summary states in the first line that there are no hardware mods necessary.
Neither is this about your "rights." Look at it from the perspective of a kid -- Mommy and Daddy are at work all the time, while you're at school. They're busy when you come back from school. One of the few times a year that you get to go do something as a family, one of both of your parents are on the phone with work -- trading stocks, SSHing into a server on their stupid blackberry, etc.
So, there you are at the park, and they;re not paying attention to you. May as well have just gone their by yourself, eh?
Frankly, if you can't take the time on a Saturday to NOT ignore your kid, then you have bigger problems than someone taking away your PDA and I sincerely feel sorry for you and your family because that's just sad.
I think having contact details in WHOIS is an archaic system left over from the days were everyone on the Internet was polite to each other (or something). It should be scrapped and only law enforcement agencies with a warrant should be able to access my contact details. Whois, finger, ~/.plan files - all relics of a courteous age before mass commercialization ruined various net services, just like its ruined practically everything else.
Its been a while since I registered a domain, but I do believe that info for the whois was optional. I've whois'd many a site that didn't have any contact info listed.
In fact, I think they only times I've ever gotten any useful and relevant info at all from whois has been for.edu or.org sites.
Slashdot has for years allowed you to never see stories posted by any editor you wish. Its under your user preferences.
I think it was introduced because of John Katz -- at least, in that's why, in this post columbine, post September 11 world, I first figured that I needed to block a Slashdot editor.
When I think of video games, I don't think of DDR. DDR is a plot to get nerds to work out by making them think they're scoring points instead of burning calories.
How about doing a study about how creative people are after going to the gym? It gets the blood flowing, oxygen circulating -- no wonder they think better.
Likewise, happy and sad emotions making people more creative than neutral or angry? Duh. Anger makes me want to break things -- or play DOOM. Frankly, DOOM doesn't make me solve problems better afterwards.
I always think better after having worked out, or done something outside. Just an observation.
Terrorists don't use credit cards. Anyone who doesn't use a credit card is a terrorist, undermining America. If you don't go into debt RIGHT NOW the ECONOMY will collapse and Warren Buffet will only be a 100x MILLION HEIR instead of a BILLION HEIR!!!
I mean to imply that good actors would be good actors, whether they did it "because of" religion or not.
Folk religions are not means of social control, directly. They are means to explain the world. Transplanted, "universal" religions are, in fact, used as means of social control.
I'm sorry if I'm coming off rabid about it, but I'm stuck in this office with people who don't believe in gravity (apparently angels grab your feet and fix you to the ground) and who want to try and "witness" to me all the time, complain about unions, etc.
I can't wait to get out of here, and every experience I've ever had with "Christians" or whateverelsehaveyou has been one fraught with hypocrisy and idiocy - like the aforementioned explanation of gravity.
"without god or religion, how do you know what is right and wrong?" they ask me. why does it bloody well matter? If I fuck people over, I'm likely to get fucked, too - and not in a pleasant way. "Altruism" is merely a front for self-interest based around the "golden rule."/His/ Church may not be out to scam people for cash, but I'm sure they ask for it to some degree, just like everyone from the Anglicans to Pat Robertson.
Well, other than the fact that there are two 'n' -- but the word also means circuit that is repeated after time. In 'pagan' religions, time is thought to be circular, as opposed to abrahamic religions where it is teleologically.
it is used to describe the year because the year is cyclical. it is used to describe the rectum because its circular.
Suicide bombers give up their lives for their religion. Those who would help others would have done it anyway.
Why are the altars of Catholic churches in Latin America covered in gold while their congregations are poor to varying degrees?
I don't believe in God and I don't like organized religion because "the church" is now and always has been a means of social control. Religion is just that.
Read Cicero's The Nature of the Gods which is done as a Socratic dialogue. One of the key points is the difference between "religion," ie the public cerimonies, holidays and things, and superstition - ie, what happens to your soul sort of things. Religion is nothing more than social control and superstition is pretty baseless.
Eastern "philosophies" may be different (and in fact seem to generally match up with the laws of physics, biology and chemistry) but Judaism, Christianity and Islam are money-making, top-down schemes based on fairy tales used to guilt kids into believing that God is watching them and that they need to give money to the church to pay for their sins, and that money will be used to spread the word to people in other parts of the world who haven't yet been informed that they're fundamentally bad and evil and need to feel guilty for having sex or having fun.

I don't intend to run X on the machine.

Well, I did spend the holiday weekend on Slashdot... with you.
If someone could please tell me wtf was so funny about that, I'd be much obliged. None of it seemed particularly funny to me while living it.

Fluxbox is pretty nice though.

I went through a phase back in 2002 where I only used console tools. I didn't log into X for 3 months.
I did all my editing in vi, used epic for irc, naim (ncurses-based aim/icq client), w3m for web browser, etc.
I'd just Alt+F(x) between my vtty's and do my business. Frankly, I think that was one of the happiest times I've had on a computer in a long while.

I'm joking about the plot part. However, it is fairly vigorous. The rest of my post is completely serious.
Don't you mean overkilobye?
*ducks*

Yes, I know -- its highly depressing. However, San Francisco is hardly representative of America. People out there think communism is cool.

Think of his children!
I'm sure there were plenty of "martyred" missionaries during the conquest of Latin America by the Spanish.
However, the point of that was sacrifice for one's religion. giving up all you own isn't as impressive as giving your life, now, is it?

First World countries are NATO-aligned, Second World countries are Soviet-aligned, and Third World countries are up for grabs...
Who has filled the Soviet void? And since the ANC was always backed by the USSR, is "democratic" SA a 2nd World country?
