With regard to Gmail (google), I believe they use a properity storage system which compress data on their storage system. Not only does the same message not be saved twice for gmail customers, parts of message which are similar like attachments will not be stored twice. In reality if people used all their quota up, it doesn't actually use that much space on gmail systems.
Simon Lok knows computer science right? Then he should knows people put comments in code to indicate that this fuctionality may be better moved elsewhere.
It usually means they are thinking ahead at when they revise the code on what to IMPROVE and not that they don't know what it is doing!
I have been writing code for ages, and I have many such segment ripe for improvement.

Same happens on google.co.uk/ig Would have thought google would expect people to try localised version and just disable it.
