So many people toss around opinions without backup here I've given up on listening since the whole thing is such a hotpotato.

And anyways, massive coastal flooding only happens if the south pole melts (because it's actually on land). If you fill a glass with water and ice, just to the point of overflowing on the edges, and cubes are sticking out the top, when that ice melts, does your glass of water overflow? Same concept with the north pole here.

I'd also like something where you can "request" mod points, although the test/screening process for this would have to be very strict. On occasion there will come a Friday night where I'm looking forward to nothing more than some beer and reading Slashdot. Then a wonderful article about something like China comes up and I can't help but think "wow, all this wasted time, I'm going to read every single post here tonight and I don't have a single modpoint."

Thanks for this informative post, that's encouraging.

In China, if they can't see your traffic (IE it's encrypted), and you're Chinese, they don't bother finding out what it is you're sending. They assume it's something you shouldn't be sharing. So they just cart you away and you never appear again.

Maybe it's an American who's doing the uploading-- they seem to be accepting of our desire for privacy "just because" (they see us as protective and secretive, because we are used to having those rights and using them just because; especially in relation to business affairs). For instance they don't bother second guessing over why all your traffic, as an American in China, is traveling over a fully encrypted American proxy; however if they caught a Chinese citizen doing so, he'd never be seen again. Same with our religions, it's fine if you're over there with an English bible, but if you have an english-chinese bible like my friend (who is a missionary over there, and who is my source on all this), and they see that it's english-chinese, they'll ship you out of the country, never let you back in, and mine your cellphone for all the phone numbers of other people you're working with and track them down and ship them out as well. It's not this way for all religions, mainly Muslims (because some of them have extremist, militant intentions; on this the US and China have grown similar) and Christians (because in China, the government is your savior, they took the people out of poverty and look at all the wealth and growth they've had over the last 15 years. They see you practicing a religion that says, "no, you are not my god, there is another God who is greater than you and no matter what you do to my physical body, you cannot harm the real, true 'me' in my soul", and that scares them. They really have no reason to be afraid because the bible is very specific about obeying your authorities as long as it doesn't involve disobeying God directly, but at first glance, such an ideology that is so contrary to the PRC's mantra (on the surface) is bad and must be stamped out.) Buddhism is allowed, even encouraged, due to the complete pacifism is promotes.

So to bring it back on topic, that's good to hear :)

I think we're missing the point of pinball.

Arcades made zero sense to me until I had pretty much played every genre of video game. Now that I don't own a console...

You start doing other things besides playing video games all the time, like socializing and hanging out. You start thinking, hm, what could be a fun, cheap, casual date destination? And suddenly the arcade makes all the sense in the world. Think about it-- after class Friday, you walk to the local college arcade with your S.O. and play some pinball, 2-player Tekken, Galaga, whatever. Cheap, easy fun that gives you the option to make small talk about whatever, but also the option to stop and have a decent conversation when you find a common interest. BUT there are none (or very few) of the tense, silent moments where you're both just looking around trying to come up with something to talk about (like during a conventional date when you go get something to eat and sit down at Applebee's for 45m) and where your apparent lack of ability at making conversation rears its ugliest. Then, after, you can drop by the Graeters/Baskin-Robins 31 for some ice cream before you head back to your dorms.

I think us gamers were so far gone from the normal world that the obvious social genius behind the arcade was lost like the forest in the trees.

In light of MS's recent comments about turning Windows 7 into a modular OS, and making it subscription based, lets look at any incentives MS might have in cutting off people from their legally purchased music.

I wonder if they're doing this on purpose to scare people away from paying once; to later introduce a subscription music service. Instead of buy once, play forever; buy forever, and play as long as you pay.

It would be very sly of them to scare people away from "buying once" into "paying continually, and if they decide to pull the product, well who cares, you're not paying anymore then after all". I'd have to say this shows incredible foresight if this is what they're aiming for; doing this to leave a sour taste in people's mouth with Buy Once software schemes; aiming for a more tame response to a subscription only Windows7. People would think "well what if they pull the activation servers on Windows Vista like they did the music? Maybe I DO want a subscription service..."

I once thought MS was stupid. Now, they may be more ingenious* than I ever imagined.

What if I suck at talking in general? I get nervous when people ask me questions about myself. For instance if someone asks me what I did yesterday, I have to stop and think for 20 seconds and recall what it was, and then take another 20 to organize the random thoughts about yesterday into a coherent sentence. If someone is waiting on you (for instance, they asked you a question) then I get nervous because I think they're thinking (and probably are, especially in this case) "why is it taking this guy so long to respond? He seems suspicious" and so they ask more probing questions and the problem just worsens.

However, I have found this to be effective at making me seems less sketchy and at forcing people to accept me. Sure, it may take me some time and some stumbling/incoherent sentences to get what I want to say out, but if I'm looking straight into their eyes when I finally have what I want to say and am saying it, they seem to be more accepting. I'm going across several borders this summer so I will be trying it if I have any problems. Wish me luck.
