  1. Re:do NOT get a direct-tv box, though! on Time Warner Cable Runs Out of HD DVRs · · Score: 1

I think I am coming to the same conclusion as you. We just got a HD set a few months ago and I fear making the complete switch to HD. We have DirecTV and we have been very happy with it compared to the cable option (Adelphia).

We have had Tivo for years and love them. Currently we have a various Tivos and can only use them for non-HD content. The only HD content we watch is the free over-the-air stuff. We watch it sometimes and sitting through commercials is very weird to us. :-)

So now I am looking at our DVR options and it is scary. The only DirecTV option is definitely a downgrade if not a total disaster from what I am reading online. A Series3 Tivo is not an option with DirecTV because it uses CableCard and DirecTV doesn't. The other choice is to go with Adelphia cable (now Comcast) but their customer service and picture quality is horrible.

So at this point, we canceled HBO to cover the cost of getting Netflix and are sticking with the Tivo. We are also going to get an Oppo upconverting DVD player for watching the DVD and other stuff.

What a horrible state this industry is in right now. The cable and satellite companies should have been licensing Tivo and Replay tech years ago but I guess they were all greedy and couldn't make a deal. So now the consumer is the one who loses.

I am not defending the MS site design but you must mean patches only released to customers experiencing a particular problem. The KB article will usually tell you to contact MS Support for patches not available on their website.

If you are talking about Service Packs, Critical Updates, and those types of things then you can get most of those things by going to windowsupdate.microsoft.com (in IE click on Tools -> Windows Update).

You can also find the Exchange 2K3 downloads in a few clicks.

    * www.microsoft.com/exchange
    * Click Downloads on the left navigation pane
    * Click Exchange 2003 Server downloads on the top right

From there I was able to download SP2 (Using Firefox) in another 2 clicks.

It may not be perfect but the MS site is much better than many other sites. Have you ever tried downloading updates or drivers from IBM? IBM Support can't even tell you how. IBM Support will give you a filename to put in their search form to find the download. It has been this way for 10 years. PATHETIC!

Why charge? Look at it this way, music sales are a small part of a band's income. Give away your MP3s and consider it a promotional cost. Bands make most of their money on concerts and merchandise.

It looks like Big Head Todd and the Monsters are doing ok giving away plenty of MP3s. The Grateful Dead did just fine letting fans record their concerts and not worrying about record sales.

DISCLAIMER: I do own a few Tivos and like them very much.

Tivos are a great product and I agree that Echostar deserves what they get if they "played dirty pool". I have not done enough research to know if Tivo's patent is too broad.

This Tivo patent may seem obvious and broad by today's standards but that may not have been the case when they applied for the patent. Patents exist so inventors can try to benefit before the vultures swoop in and capitalize in on someone else's work.

Tivo needs to get their act together. They seem to have a product far better than anything else on the market but may have burned some bridges in the past. They need to get their tech and service licensed to the cable/sattelite box makers. People using DVRs offered by their provider that haven't used a Tivo don't know the difference and don't care. They only know their DVR is better than not having a DVR and that it is (usually) much cheaper than Tivo.

In the end the customers will always pay for these lawsuits. That is the nature of the business world.

We have not experienced the cost savings you mention even after filling 2 chassis. Blades are just too darn expensive.

Yes they are nice when you consider how easy it is to just slide a blade in and go but it doesn't end there. Those modules have limits and as long as you can live within those limits then you will be fine.

    * Some blades implementations are limited to 2 NICs. This is less than ideal for VMWare.
    * The same goes for FibreChannel connections. Less than ideal for some applications.
    * Some chassis throttle the CPUs if a power supply fails. Again, less than ideal for some shops.

Blades are great if you are short on space and can live with their limitations.
