  1. Re:Worth on Fortune Takes a Look at Bram Cohen · · Score: 1
How can this company be worth 8.75 million. What does it do that is worth that much a year? As far as I can see nothing. The only "product" it has it gives away for free. If it started charging a dozen open source versions would appear in it's place. Even if they didn't the system can be copied by others for virtually nothing. What is it with these really high value estimations? He doesn't have to sell Bittorent at all. Instead the company could start up a distribution network for Hollywood, the music industry and the TV industry to sell their stuff via the internet. The company could advertise "Download Season 1 of Lost with Bittorent!" Then everyone would be using that network to get the latest songs and TV shows. Bram could then take a cut of the profits or something.

That kind of company could make millions if not billions.

There is still a lot of features lacking in Thunderbird, partly because I do not see many people incorporating other GPL software into it (are there still licensing issues, or is it fully GPL/LGPL now?). Thunderbird and Firefox like most of the Mozilla Foundation's projects are licenced under a GPL/LGPL/MPL tri-licence. You can pick whatever licence that fits your needs.

When he goes to the court, no one is there execpt for the judge. His case is dissmissed.

  4. Bill not Law and who will pass it? on Canada Introduces DMCA-Style Copyright Law · · Score: 2, Interesting
First of all it is a bill and not a law, which means it is subject to revision and such. Secondly I wonder which parties will pass this bill? Right now we have a minority government and I have found no information about the parties' stance on this bill.

There are four parties right in the Commons with two independants as tiebreakers. Since the Liberals introduced the bill they are obviously going to vote for it.

That means they need the support of one more party (and possibly an independant) if this bill is going to pass. The Liberals will ask the NDP to pass this bill, but I think this bill might go against the pary policy (protecting peoples rights).

That leaves the oposition (The Conservative Party)which will not vote with the government and the Bloc, who hates the government. That means that if the NDP doesn't vote with the Librals this bill will not pass.

    There is some hope.
