  1. SlaughterHouse Five on Time Doesn't Exist · · Score: 2
Is worth a read on the concept of time. Vonnegut's Trafalmadorians see all of time, such that when they see you, they see you from infancy to death and that we're all just kind of like bugs in amber.

The protagonist, Billy Pilgrim, is unstuck in time; i.e., he jumps backwards and forwards in time.

The best part is the Trafalmadorians' description of human perception of time, something like strapped to a locomotive barreling forward with nowhere to look but ahead...

I disagree with your last bit; this type of commentary is exactly why I enjoy /.

These are very real issues that need to be addressed and the best part of the web is the ability to do just that in a public forum.

We're just beginning to confront the ethical issues inherent in technology. For example, cloning. Does a human clone constitute another, separate being or a property owned by the original? Our legal system as we know it can't keep up with technology and the ethical considerations. The more we're aware of the issues, the greater the chance we're able to handle the coming ethical issues.

100% better than M9 on my system. It's fast, stable and even the javascript is working. I may switch to it full-time.

What I'd like to know is how much 6.0 is still in the distribution channel?

If I were a stock holder, which I'm not, I'd be concerned about the number of returns. I don't pretend to know much about resale channels, but I've got to think there's a lot of surplus.

What do they do with all of that stock, anyway?

  5. ASP v. PHP 4 on PHP3/4 as Web Development Platform? · · Score: 2
I've coded both extensively. If you're running NT, use ASP/SQL Server 7.0; PHP under NT isn't there yet.

CF doesn't do everything I need and it's damned ugly.

    Linux: PHP 4 and Apache.

    ASP:

Pros: ASP makes better use of record sets through the recordset (surprise!) component and the use of sessions variables is much more intuitive.

    Cons: NT

    PHP:

Pros: Linux/Apache and a much wider range of support for inexpensive (and expensive, if you like) databases.

    Cons: None

  6. Re:asd on Ask Slashdot: Employees or Contractors? · · Score: 2
I've been both and I've managed both and I prefer employees over contractors. It's as difficult finding good contractors as it is employees. Good employees are expensive, but not nearly as expensive as contractors.

Depending on how you structure the company, employees are certainly more loyal, especially if there's stock involved. They'll hang their asses on the line to get the job done, whereas contractors typically -- note "typically" -- have a laissez faire attitude towards projects. This is more a market problem for employers than anything else; contractors typically come from firms that can have a backlog of opportunities. If the contractor is faced with a difficult project, the contractor can usually bow out for an easier one. An employee can typically find jobs quickly in the market, certainly, but there's always the hassle of having to find the job (unless he/she wants to become a contractor).

I've found that a good working environment with employees is better than any group of contractors...
