Interesting. When Microsoft stops supporting an OS after 7 years, it is irresponsible. When RedHat does it after 2 or 3, it is just hunky dory.

You are a bafoon. First of all, there is no such thing as "Windows XP Server." However, that's a minor nitpick.

The point I want to make though, is this: Did you intelligently lock down the machine? Did you have current patches installed? I think the answer to one or both of those questions is "no."

Even more important: was the machine behind a firewall? Anyone who runs a web server, regardless of operating system, DESERVES to get hacked. (Intentional overstatement.) Come on... to deploy a system without adequate security measures and then blame the OS vendor when it gets hacked is silly.

Guess what: a Linux box running Apache is insecure if it is not properly configured and patches are not up to date. I am not saying that Linux is just as insecure as Windows 2000 Server I am saying that the user does bear SOME responsibility for maintaining a secure environment.

It was one of the most joyous moments of my professional career. It was a complete disaster for the CIO. His contract wasn't renewed a few months later. I was promoted.

Thank you for restoring my faith in the human race. It sounds like sometimes, somewhere, reason triumphs over stupidity.

Unlike many markets, yours isn't full of people that can't tie their shoes.
Sadly, this has not been MY experience. I have met some seriously stupid developers. I don't mean "can't write a decent algo" stupid... I mean "what's the number for 911" stupid. I always thought that the mindset required to be a programmer/developer would act as an intellectual filter of sorts... but alas, that idealism was based on the assumption that everyone in the industry would be at least marginally productive, which is often not the case. Now... Getting back on the thread... I hate to admit it, but nobody seems to have licked this as well as Microsoft. The OSS projects I've worked on did not have very good developer documentation because documentation is not fun. Even companies like Macromedia (I do a lot of ColdFusion work) don't do a good job of supporting developers. However, Microsoft's MSDN is an excellent resource when I'm writing code for people on the dark side. I hate to admit it, but their developer support is one of the few areas where I have to give them some credit. --- jrjones@criticaldomain.net
