and iirc after the war britan was under crushing debt (mainly to the US) from having been the main fighter on the western front for a large portion of the war.
non techical home users are still getting vista whether they want it or not. In time this will mean that there is a lot of pressure on those places that want to look up to date to upgrade. There will also be pressure from hardware vendors who don't want to support both XP and vista forever.
Of course, all that is needed to fix this is for tickets to be tied to the credit card. You buy the ticket with the card, you confirm it's your card when you get there. so buy them using prepaid cards and include the card with the ticket?
you can already buy your own domain and host it with practically any provider you want though they will tend to charge you more than they charge for names that carry lockin with them.
One issue though with using a real world unit like dB SPL or similar is that the computer doesn't actually know what signal level translates into what SPL. A laptop outputting everything its got may only producing only 50dB max on the built in speakers meanwhile plug the same system into a stadium sound system and suddently its 120dB or more, yet the computer has no way of knowing this. True but that doesn't really matter, his main point was to allow the user to define a minimum and maximum intensity and have any sounds that fell outside of those bounds adjusted. Using DB relative to peak output would work just as well.
However for general apps it is not very practical because you can't know how loud a sound will be until after it has finished so per app volume control is a reasonable compromise (basically working on the assumption that all the sounds output by one app will be output at a similar level)
Communism looks good on paper also, but history has shown us large scale implementation does not work. quite right
the fact is that succesfull societies need to find a middle ground. They need to have some compassion for the poor but not take it to such extremes that noone bothers to work.
how many people own legit windows but after the scare stories refuse to submit to wga? my guess is it is a nontrivial number.
Also MS doesn't know how many legit copies of windows are still in active use, since OEM copies are basically tied to the PC they came with lots and lots of them are going to have ended up in the tip over windows XPs lifetime.
IE 7 can't officially be installed on any version of windows that didn't ship with IE from the factory.
also iirc MS provides a downloadable EXE which you can use to validate your copy of windows and get your download if you are using a browser other than IE.
it might indeed but I think in any significant sized buisness the people responsible for the IE 6 lockin are unlikely to be the people who have to deal with the consequences.
it might be handed down from head office with the local staff forced to suck it up. it might have been bought in by a PHB who doesn't want to pay for updates. it may have been developed in house but by a programming team who are completely independent from the IT management team it may have been written by people who have since quit the company
it only takes one or two people in the right positions to get an organisation locked in not just to a peice of propietry software but also to an old version of said software. Afaict this is usually driven more by laziness and ignorance than by malice. IE versions are a particulally bad thing to get locked into because of thier strong ties to windows versions.
I very much doubt MS would do something like that. It would make a lot of people change from not caring about the bad stuff MS does to actively planning to migrate ASAP.
This means that for at least seven days, any Ecuadoran corporation that needs Microsoft support is SOL [Sh*t Outta Luck]. That might cause some ripples in the mining industry, for instance. can't they just call up microsoft in the US directly?
IE6 is still standard in many places that would have no problem with WGA (nice XP pro corprate edition with legit keys, just have to make sure your key doesn't get leaked to widely or you could have a LOT of rekeying to do). Afaict the main reason is intranet apps (either inhouse developed or bought in) that only work properly with IE6 and which are difficult, expensive or even impossible to fix.
I know that here at the university of manchester they officially do not support IE7 (though many machines that aren't centrally managed have ended up with it anyway) yet because of this.
"Internet Explorer 7 will not install automatically - the Automatic Updates delivery process will include a welcome screen that offers users choices of Install, Don't Install, and Ask Me Later prior to installation."
I'm not saying that the "bloat" is nessacerally a bad thing but it is a reality that you can't run current software at acceptable speeds on older hardware and that running older software is also problematic for many reasons.
What you seem to be missing is that the iphones are not being subsidized by AT&T, they are being paid for entirely by the customer, and as such would normally not come with a lock. The only reason why they are being locked is that AT&T isn't able to compete with other carriers. They are being subsidised by AT&T just in a more roundabout way than usual. Rather than AT&T selling you the phone at a discount conditional on you buying a contract apple are selling you the phone and then AT&T pay the subsidy monthly once you activate it.
* you do photo editing seriously and want to use the standard proffesional photo editing tool (yes it is availible for the mac but they have their own problems like having to pay well over £1000 for a machine capable of supporting a matching pair of monitors) on an OS it is supported on. * you program PICs and want to use microchips debugging tools * you have internal buisness applications that require windows and don't work properly under wine. * you have to work with people who have standardised on applications that are not availible for linux (be it office, altium designer or whatever)
"ShipIt is currently closed while we prepare for the Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) release. We'll be back in a few days."
but other than that afaict you can only get the latest ricer release, I don't think you can get the alternate CD (needed to do upgrades from CD afaict) and in some countries there can be issues with customs.
and if you aren't in the US it will probablly take a week or so whereas you can have the windows XP pro VLK CD and key the same day.
i'm sure lots of people "pirate" (I put pirate in quotes because a lot of people have legit licenses but use dodgy copies of corp because they can't be assed with all the activation and bios locking bullshit) windows yet stick with IE as the familiar browser.
also there have been some scare stories about wga rejecting legit copies so some people even with legit copies may have just decided not to risk it.
This is something that has always struck me as rather odd about many legal systems, they need reasonable doubt to put you away in jail but they can take away everything you own on much weaker grounds.
sure it is, I was just pointing out that brits lived in wartime like conditions for a lot longer than the actual war.

home users and small buisnesses seem to manage fine without any meaningfull support from MS, why do corps need it so badly?
and surely if they are really desperate they can just ring microsoft support in the USA.
If they need more licenses desperately then worst case they can just buy them retail.
in sumary why is a short term (or even permanent) shutdown of a local branch office significant?
This means that for at least seven days, any Ecuadoran corporation that needs Microsoft support is SOL [Sh*t Outta Luck]. That might cause some ripples in the mining industry, for instance.

for i386 binaries /lib/ld-linux.so.2
/lib/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2
for amd64 binaries
what are the restrictions on the free version?
hmm, I couldn't find the words pensioner and manslaughter anywhere on that page.
but anyway at least in british english (that study is british) both those works are pretty common.
lets add a few more possible reasons
