The IBM ThinkPads work really good with linux, I have ONLY good memmorys from my girlfriends mothers laptop (yeah she run linux and write in TeX she is cool!).
It took me a while to figure out what type of soundcard and graphics device it was (all information from IBM sux). To your knowlage it is a crystal CS card and neomagic
IMHO the Pentium233 is the most price-valued ThinkPads on the market, you could probaly get one for $1000 and it can without problem keep up with a PentiumII 233 (did a compile-the-kernel-test).
