Linux has nothing to with software or technology. It's a test of the human spirit.
It's just a friggin OPERATING SYSTEM. How much of a "test of the human spirit" is inserting a BOOTABLE Red Hat CD-ROM and turning on the damn machine? (Granted for a typical Mac user, that would be a stretch of technical capacity.)
It's idiotic cultist statements like that which contribute to the undying arrogance of this so called "community".
If you READ what I wrote, you would see that the ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY is fucking the consumer, not the artist themselves. I pity the artists because most of them don't own a copyright on SHIT, the company that pimps them out does. They can't even GIVE away a public performance recording that THEY did without the record company shutting it down. (Reference: Public Enemy, Bring On Da Noise 2000 MP3 fiasco.)
Why don't you try to comprehend the point of view before you attack it.
Soon we will all be whores for pay-per-view with no cash left to feed our families because we had to watch Friends AND listen to the radio all in one day.
Consumers are taking it up the ass from the entertainment industry, and there is no end in site.
You really shouldn't post anonymously, it makes you look silly.
Once again, I'll give a rats ass about MY OWN grammar when I start saying that I deserve some sort of respect from people for all my years of journalistic service like you always do.
I never claimed to be a journalist for so many years as Mr. Katz seems to reiterate in every one of his posts. He seems to want people to respect him for this fact and regard him as a "techno-geek" writer, but these obvious miscues are tell tale signs of a "professional journalist" that is no professional at all.
If he'd get off his "I've been a geek writer for years" soap box and just write, he's gain much more respect and far less flames for his mistakes.
Is there an argument for the fact that many, if not all of the lyrics submitted could have been created from listening to public performances (radio) of the song? At that point, they are not "copying" anything, they are simply reporting what they heard on the PUBLIC airways.
How is this different than a reporter typing up the transcript from a speech given at a public event or a news journalist repeating a statement made by a public official on the sidewalk?
If someone typed up the lyrics word for word from the inside of a CD Jewel case that's one thing, but I think there is an argument for the other.
Unfortunately, there isn't enough money in the world to fight them on this.
I was gonna send my kid in with a Furby as an undercover agent. I was sure they'd let him and his little toy into many secure areas since they are so cute together.

The FAQ says that the data set is public domain anyway so what value would a GPL'd CD add? Also, how "open" is this "Open Source(tm)" representative when he selectively gives away stuff like this and excludes anyone he feels isn't worthy?
I'm not trying to say what he should do, he can do what he wants but it just seems kind of ironic to me that he would buy something up that is public anyway, then GPL it only to keep it to himself and what he feels are a few "worthy" companies. - DaBuzz.net
I would have thought that the 1995 copyright notice at the bottom of the page would have been a tip off that this isn't "news". However, it is true. - DaBuzz.net

Until that day comes, I don't give a shit.

Interesting, to say the least. heh.

Wow, now THAT'S a damn good idea!
I wonder how well that would go over in the states.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I find no mention of "ftp" or "microsoft" in that article. Where is this quote coming from?
