    afaik the phone jacks are the same, and the modems will work. Alot of hotels will have phone jacks, but they can charge quite high prices for phone calls. ISPs cover the whole country, and alot of ISPs are free here (but the call charges are per minute) Dunno about france though.

    uhmmmm , I'm currently buying a dell machine from dell direct, and it's _1_ machine and I got as much to configure as a NT machine... preinstalled too, dunno what the hell you are moaning about. Just my $0.02

    I have to agree, an I'm not going to use an AC account, I personally think that linux and open source is the way forward, but the open source community is becoming just as closed minded as NT-only sysadmins ... there are certain things that I'll use NT etc for somethings simply because it suits the job, (exchange for example is the best mail server available for a medium sized company). If linux/OSS is to move forward, the OSS community has to move forward too. Note, I'm not logging in as ac, I'm quite happy for you to flame me / moderate me down, it only proves my point.

    I don't think that the gnome / kde thing is so much of a problem, you can still run kde apps in gnome and vice versa (with the kde libs installed), personally I prefer the "look and feel" of gnome but kde has better standard apps.. whats the problem ???

    also, with their t-buffer's depth of field and motion blur, you could get some pretty cool windowing effects... windows out of focus could literally be "out of focus" and windows could blur as you move them. neat! ---- no, it would just give you a headache

    to make a 3d wm worthwhile, you'd have to actually be using 3d apps, 2d apps in a 3d environment is just a gimmick methinks... 3d web pages ne1 ??

    you can tell your computer to run processes in the background while you are working --- but wouldn't it be funky to have these processes quite literally in the background ?? (probbly get a crooked neck tho :P )

    er, isn't the entire reason you're given a dynamic ip to PREVENT you having a web server ?? (you could always use dynamic dns or something but only as subdomains of penguinpowered.com or something similar ;) ) They'll probbly close of half the ports though, we're soooo behind with all this stuff this side of the ocean, BT really need to wake up methinks.

    While on this subject, does anyone know of an exchange client for linux (with access to public folders and forms etc.) it's the one thing thats stopping me changing this computer to linux at work :(.

    Damn it ... we still have to wait for cable modem .. the US has had it for years ... and as for DSL, BT think it would cut their ISDN sales so we won't be getting that either ... why does the uk have to wait so long for it ????

    It could make a difference if forums were actually on the websites and the politicians were involved in answering comments and questions ... answering real questions on the net could be just as productive as public speaking, but only when enough people have access ....

    So what if I linked to somewhere that linked to illegal sites?? could I get sued then?? also, why haven't music companies sued all the search engines ?? Shouldn't it be part of their responsibiltiies to filter out illegal links ?? If this suing isn't restricted to the source, the internet will become like america and everyone will need a good lawyer .. :(

    I fail to see the point ... so what if some one can hack into your dreamcast ??? It's not as if they'd be able to do anything interesting once there anyways surely ???
