I've used linux for about 3 years on and off, and one of the hardest things I had to deal with was poor, or non-existant documentation. I would gladly read the f*cking manual if i could f*cking find it!
(not meaning to be bitter, it's the morning coffee)
the people who make the pos system for radio shack should be drawn and quartered.
the pos is at it's 11th major release with coutless minor bug fixes, yet, it is embarresing for me to deal with it. the other day, it wouldn't print out a reciept for a credit card purchuse, so the customer couldn't sign our copy and get theirs. we had to manualy get the reciept from another computer and it took us literaly 10 minutes for the machine to catch up with us. it wasn't lag time as we had just rung up the sale, and there were no transactions done in between the credit card purchuse and finaly printing up the reciept.
i am personally afraid of what RadioShack will do to the poor astronauts that go up in their shuttles. if they can't get a stupid point-of-sale system to work without major bugs, what makes you think that they can get humans in space without killing them.
Excellent point. Many people here seem to forget that. It was his income, and if the fbi comes to me and tells me to stop doing something or lose my income(in a logical connection) of course i am gonna stop. the vast majority of you would stop.
if the fbi told cmdrtaco to stop, i bet he would post something on slashdot, pass it on to all of the other sites that most slashdotterd would read, then shut down. the resulting wave of attacks on the fbi would influence them to let him put the site back up.
i was part of a small isp(doing mac tech support) and we could barely afford the connection (t-1) and phone bills. i was paid by the users who houses i went to. fortunitly, the tech support job was my first job at 16, so i didn't need it to survice.
if your primary source of income is threatened, then you will most likely stop. i don't know if slashdot is cmdrtaco's primary source of income, but if the fbi told him to stop or they'll do something bad to him, then i'm pretty sure he'll stop (if just long enough to get the slashdot community pissed off)
the dean has some criminal charges up against her, i'm not sure what the latest scoop is, but i can find out if you want to know. it is illegal because she went into it with false intent(i think that's the law she broke). She knew the contract would just be an admission of guilt, and the bargin would not have to be held up.
actualy, ethernet cards MAC addresses are burned into the hardware. the first half is assigned to the manufacurer, and the second half is the unique serial assigned by the manufacture. Every ethernet card needs a specific id, that's how ip addresses work...they are connected to the id. for more information, ask your local network techniction, or take the Cisco CCNA course.
What are the rules on tarrifs for free stuff? Say I want to download something that is created by a company based in the US, and i need to fill out a form to download it, but it's free. The form is basicly a shipping form, but at the end they have a download link. I (for example live in Umbekixstan, which i don't, but it's an example) fill out this form and download the software. Also, for example the tarrif for online crap to our country is US$10. Does someone (the company or I) have to pay that tarrif? or because it's free software, is it ignored?
currently, i am on a mp3 server (of which i am one of the main admins) and we are having a great chat. i mainly get on just to chat with the people there. it's a private server, so people had to get in by word of mouth, or back like 2-3 years ago when it was a public server. we get some pretty crazy chats going, and if they get to henious, we just get a private chat going with those we want to talk to.
the bbs community (not that i would know, never joined a bbs, just went straight to the internet) is alive and well.....it's just well hidden from the mass public.
I'm so glad that it's intelligently designed.

Smart polymers? wow.....who here has wanted to be that "fly on the wall at *fillinplacehere*"? i tell you, female locker rooms, and dorm showers will get lots of "visitors". and think of the bank robbers....imagine, with the polymers embedded into their skin, they can be any size, shape, color, ect they want. this also allows for celebrity look-alikes, and for realistic "role playing" in the bedroom. pretty boys will be a thing of the past. actors will be chosen for their talent, not on their looks (remember, it can be anything they want)
Not all of these things are evil of course, but you have to be able to look at things with a dose of realism. all it takes is one of the people who has it to slip up somewhere (as in the DeCSS fiasco) and the black market will have a field day.
i personaly would like a neural connection to the net, ala count zero. maybe a food replicator, or converter (pound of dirt, becomes a pound of steak...for example)
sorry, but they are considered invalid. lets take the following example (i know this to be true, because it did happen)
some high school students (all under 18) came back from going off campus for lunch. they stop to talk to one of the hall monitors, because they are neighbors. the hall monitor mentions that he smells pot, and has the dean of students come out to the car (standard procedure). the dean calls the police (but for some reason doens't call the parents, which is also illegal in this district), with a drug dog, and they don't find anything, however in this school district, there is a zero tolerance for drugs, so they are to be expelled. the dean takes pity on the students, and decides to give them just a 5 day suspension(maximun allowed in the school district), if they sign a waiver saying that they did smoke pot, but they are ammiting it. in the agreement, is the punishment, and the admission. the dean takes the contract, and because of the law saying that minors can't sign contracts, it becomes a signed confession, which is allowed for minors. they get expelled, and the students parents sue the school district. the dean got fired, and there was a large ruckus raised about the whole thing. the students are back in the school which they were expelled from.
we should revise the current law to something of the effect of "if you have a drivers license, you are competant enough to sign a contract as an adult" or something to that effect (i chose drivers license, because if you have one, you have to be competant enough to drive....(then again, this is california......))
the reason they are doing this is because minors are legaly incompitant. that is why they can't sign a contract. minors aren't affected by EULA's, because any contract that they agree to without their parent's consent(and that is a difficult thing for anyone to prove that they have), is invaild.
tenure is a double edged sword. i had a great english teacher my senior year in high school, who was also the best drama teacher that we've had(a new one every year, except for him, who lasted 2 years) in our school district (or state, i don't remember) tenure is 2 years, and every april, teachers are notified if they are to come back, or to just finish the year, then find a new job. while this allowed them more time to try to find a job, this also cause those who are being "let go" to be horrible teachers. the mentality was "what are you gonna do? fire me?" they would let go all of the good teachers, cause they pissed someone up in the office off...(like suggest that academics just MIGHT be more important that atheletics) i hated english almost every day of school, from kindergarden on..(i read extensivly, but i hated english class, it was vocab and busy work....) yet this teacher convinced me that english was great, and made learning about it fun....i learnd lots in his class, and he also tought the class about real life things with english. unfortinutly, he got in trouble (accused of staturtory rape, but the accuseor later ammited that it wasn't true) and was fired 20 days before graduation in a senior required class. i shudder to think about those 20 days, so much bullshit, and so much work we had to do, just so we could walk in the graduation.
we also had another teacher that was forced to quit, because they totaly wanted to remove his favorite classes (physiscs, geology, and computer construction technology, he has a masters degree in geo-physics, and i think he worked on the manhatten project) they finaly tried to move his computer class to one of the "portables" (which is like trying to run an isp out of a mobile home) so he finaly quit...such a sad state of affairs in some high schools
Being as I have spent all of my schooling in california, and being a "GATE" student(that's Gifted And Talented Eduaction for those of you thare are lucky enough not to know what it is) i am not suprised that california is 49th in schools. the school system is horrible here. in GATE, we had some special classes in like 3rd grade, and we went on some cool field trips to learn stuff, but when we got to 5th grade and up(includeing high school) all we did was play risk, monopoly, and chess.......while i enjoy those games, we needed to do something else, try to learn something else.
i would get in trouble in my preschool class cause i could read books, and i read silently, instead of reading out loun and struggling. i don't think i tried a day in school, except for high school calculus, which i bombed on because of CMP mathematics (i'm not trying to make an excuse, but when a pre-calc answer is "a taxi" it's not real math.) i can remember days in almost any class when i would do the homework assignment, while the teacher was explaining it(the first 5 min of class) and i would finish before the teacher, put my homework in the middle of my table, and let the people in my group copy off of my homework....
all of the habits i learned in public school (lazyness, not-caring, doing it half assed, etc) are staying with me in the real world, and in college, and it's killing me. i don't think i learned a book fact in elementry school and high school. i learned plenty of other things, such as: how to jump fences, how to pick locks, how to bullshit excuses, how to lie to administrators, how it doesn't matter if you skip school, how to cheat well on tests, how to bypass security procedures, the wonders of the black market, etc. I helped to design/set up the network at school, so i had complete control of grades, and attendance information, i was good friends with the librarian, so i coulnd't ever owe the school any money, ever. i had the deans under my control, i had back access the janitors were jelous about. all of this during class, when i wasn't learning any book things. i didn't do a single assignment in physics for the entire spring semester, yet i still passed that class with an A.
when i have kids, i hope to god that they don't go to a public school in california...(and if we're 49th, who the hell is worse than us? and how did they manage that?)

i see the humor value in your post, so i won't flame you or something. However, that is not far from the truth. My mom was pregnet before me(I am the first born) and that resulted in a miscarrige (not due to doctorsm or my mom doing anything, just luck i suppose). Not relevant, but true nonetheless.
Yes. Absolutely. Just as a woman has the right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. Just as any person should be able to make a decision/carry out the wishes of an individual's euthenasia. eg. cases of terminal illness. These are huge ethical decisions but should be owned by the people whose lives they most directly effect.
I was not supposed to be born. The doctors told my mother that I would not survive the birthing process, and if by some miracle, I did survive, then I would have extreme brain damage, not able to be a useful member of society, not able to be a human being, etc. My parents decided not to abort me (as if I need to mention this;-) and suprise, suprise, I fooled the doctors.
Granted, my brain damaged-ness can be argued by my friends, and being a useful member of society and being a human being will undoubtedly be argued in future posts, but my point is, I am alive, and I am able to do things. I out read everyone at my elementary school when I was in kindergarten. I was one of those "nerdy" kids who played with computers in his spare time(when he wasn't reading books). I have even directly saved a human's life multiple times(not bragging, just using these as arguments for me being useful to society)
If I was aborted, those 2 people may, or may not have died. I would not have influenced the lives of the other people I know. By letting me live, I have helped many people. I help the other students in my classes, (I'm only 19, so far that's my only world) and I help the teachers with projects and stuff. You can't decide at birth what kind of a person one will be. I became what I am because I was told I couldn't be useful.
Steve Wozniak left Apple because he was in a plane crash, and obtained "selective amnisia". He couldn't remember the project he was working on, and that freaked him out, so he quit. Steve Jobs on the other hand, was fired in an ugly power struggle, then was worshiped when he took the job again, but that's a different story.
I wish nothing but the best, and many sleep-filled nights!
